Athletic Bilbao player Yeray Álvarez suspended for taking banned substance in hair loss treatment
The Spanish defender said in a social media post Thursday that he had been informed 'some weeks ago' that he had failed a drug test after Athletic lost to Manchester United in the Europa League semifinals in May.
Álvarez, now 30, had to step away from soccer in 2017 for several months to treat testicular cancer .
He says that following his return to playing he has since been taking medication to fight alopecia and that the cause of his positive result on the doping test was because he 'involuntarily took a medicine to prevent hair loss that contained a banned substance.'
'The news (of my ban) has been a hard blow and one I couldn't believe given that I have never in my life consumed banned substances,' he said.
He said that his case is still in the initial phase and that his suspension is provisional.
Athletic said it 'lamented Yeray's human error and will give him all its support.'
Athletic will play in the Champions League next season.

And I think through those moments through those times, I've slowly layered by layer of the layer, backing myself and showing myself my ability.' WHAT AUSTON TRUSTY SAID Trusty wasn't included on the U.S. men's national team roster for the 2025 Gold Cup, but the Celtic center-back has remained supportive of the program and believes the tournament was a valuable learning experience for the group. Trusty further touched upon the USMNT's Gold Cup summer and believes that while the team initially had a tough run, he thinks that they've learnt a lot and that the blocks are in place. 'Obviously, I would love to go and represent the country,' Trusty said. 'That's my entire dream. Any call up I can get, I'll be eager to take full advantage...I back coach back the team and obviously, you had some bad results. No one wants these results, but I think the team is just learning. He added, 'Some of those guys were key guys who have been on the team in the past, and they brought in some new people. So we're just finding our way, but I think we do have time. I think on the outside, it seems like, 'oh, what's going on?' But I think Poch really has a good idea what's going to happen, and he's still like building the blocks, but I think we're in a good spot.' The center back also praised Pochettino for the tactical knowledge he's brought to the setup, reflecting on his own experience in early camps under the Argentine. 'He called me in the first couple of camps, it was great, they were great. And I haven't had too much conversations [or been] in touch since then, but it's all good standing...I think the coaches have been really good and obviously they're highly qualified and experienced too," he said. 'Poch is an extremely experienced coach, so you know he knows what he's talking about, so to be in those environments, to put yourself in that environment to maybe adapt to doing certain things or do things, maybe, maybe you're not used to doing, it only benefits yourself. So I've only looked at that in a really positive way." It's that time of the year when pundits are making their predictions as to who will come out on top of the pile this season. Coleraine are the team many are plucking for to wrestle the Irish Premiership crown off Linfield given their recruitment following Henry Ross' hefty investment at The Showgrounds. It's 51 years since the Bannsiders lifted their one and only top flight title to date, but according to Pundit Arena they will be waiting a while longer with another club predicted to come out on top and end their own title drought. Pundit Arena provided the supercomputer with a list of all 12 teams in the league and adding how many summer signings each team have made and how many players they have lost so far. They also asked the supercomputer to predict the full league table including points, goal difference, matches won, matches lost, matches drawn and how many overall games they played. To make the supercomputer prediction as accurate as possible, they also provided it with extensive information about each club in the Irish Premiership, including their recent form and how they performed last season, who their manager is, their financial position and the general feeling from fans about the upcoming season. Based on all of these factors, the supercomputer predicted that Glentoran will win their first Gibson Cup since 2009, whilst Carrick Rangers will be the team relegated from the Irish Premiership come the end of the season. The supercomputer also predicted that Coleraine will come close to the title, finishing as runners-up ahead of defending champions Linfield. Whether AI's prediction comes anywhere close to be true remains to be seen however. Certainly the bookmakers have the reigning champions Linfield as their title favourites heading into the new campaign, which gets underway next Saturday, August 9. One thing is for sure however, there's certain to be plenty of twists and turns along the way.
