At Least 21 Killed, Dozens Injured After Bus Overturns In Southern Iran
Officials confirmed that rescue efforts are ongoing and said that further information, including the final casualty figures, will be released once the operation is complete
At least 21 people lost their lives and dozens were injured after a coach overturned in southern Iran on Saturday, according to state media reports. The accident happened near the town of Kavar, around 1,000 kilometres south of the capital, Tehran.
Masoud Abed, head of the emergency organisation in Fars province, said 34 others were injured in the crash, which took place south of Shiraz, the provincial capital.
Abed confirmed that the incident occurred at 11:05 a.m. local time, and rescue forces were immediately present at the scene.
He stated that rescue efforts are still underway and that more details, including the final number of casualties, will be shared once the operation is finished and a thorough investigation has been completed.
Kavar Hospital director Mohsen Afrasiabi told state television, 'Unfortunately, 21 deaths have been recorded." He added that many of the injured had been taken to hospital for treatment.
Images shared by Iranian media showed the bus lying on its side along a mountain road. The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed and is currently under investigation.
Iran has one of the highest rates of road traffic deaths in the world. According to official figures, nearly 17,000 people are killed every year in traffic-related accidents. Experts say the high numbers are often due to poor road conditions, ageing vehicles, lack of driver discipline, and weak emergency response systems.

Sri Lanka starts issuing temporary driving license to tourists at airport
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Colombo, Aug 3 (PTI) Sri Lanka on Sunday launched a programme to issue temporary driving licenses to tourists at the international airport. 'Foreign tourists and even Sri Lankan visitors to the country, who are not dual citizens, would be issued these licenses valid for a month," Kamal Amarasinghe, the chief of the Motor Traffic Department, said here. The tourists getting these temporary licenses would, however, be not eligible to drive heavy vehicles and three wheeler tuk-tuks, Amarasingha said. Currently, any tourists could have obtained a license at the Department's Colombo suburban facility following the due process, he said, adding, the new arrangement is a more swift process where tourists can self drive. Indians lead Sri Lanka tourists arrivals in July 2025
Last Updated: Colombo, Aug 3 (PTI) Sri Lanka received a total of 200,244 tourists in July 2025, with Indian travellers accounting for the largest share, local media reported on Sunday. This marks an increase of 6.6 per cent in total tourists arrivals as compared to figures from the same period last year, according to the latest data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), Ada derana news portal reported. SLTDA data reveals that 37,128 tourists arrived from India, making up 18.5 per cent of the total tourist footfall in July. This was followed by 23,475 visitors from the United Kingdom, 15,556 from the Netherlands, 12,982 from China, and 11,059 from France. The total number of tourist arrivals in the first seven months of 2025 stands at 1,368,288. Among them, 279,122 were from India, 131,377 from Russia, and 115,470 from the UK, according to the SLTDA. On July 25, Sri Lanka extended its free tourist visa policy to 40 additional countries as part of efforts to boost tourism and support economic recovery. While an annual revenue loss of USD 66 million is expected due to the visa fee waiver, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath stated that the indirect economic benefits from increased tourist arrivals would outweigh the loss.
