‘Best place to make movies': Toronto presents Guillermo del Toro with key to the city
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow presented the Mexican-born filmmaker with the ceremonial honour Thursday morning, saying his history of producing films in Toronto has created jobs and supports a local screen industry.
In accepting the key, del Toro said he loves Toronto and considers it 'the best place to make movies.'
The presentation took place at the waterfront Cinespace Studios, which says it's renaming four sound stages to pay tribute to the 'Shape of Water' writer-director.
Del Toro says he's spent about half of his 30-year career making movies in Toronto, including 2009's effects-laden action film 'Pacific Rim' and 2017's fantasy 'The Shape of the Water,' which netted Oscars for best director and best picture.
Next up is his Netflix film 'Frankenstein,' featuring Jacob Elordi as the titular monster, which Del Toro says will be finished at the Toronto video production studio Company 3.
'Frankenstein' is bound for the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
'I have loved Toronto for so many years and I am very happy that it loves me back,' del Toro said during the ceremony.

Lord and Miller, the Oscar-winning duo behind the 'Spider-Verse' Spider-Man animated films, talked about the challenges of shooting a 'crazy ambitious' film which takes place inside a spaceship for the most part. 'We had to build an entire spaceship in two modes of gravity, and then we built this entire massive tunnel at scale,' Miller said. 'This is insane, to build a tunnel that was like 100 feet (30 metres) long, filled up an entire stage.' Toronto gives The Weeknd key to the city ahead of a four-concert run at Rogers Centre
TORONTO – Toronto has given 'Can't Feel My Face' singer The Weeknd a key to the city as the star returns to play four shows in his hometown. Toronto Mayor Oliva Chow presented the ceremonial honour to the Scarborough-born singer Saturday morning in recognition of how he has 'reshaped modern music' and supported health and humanitarian causes in Toronto and abroad. The Weeknd, or Abel Tesfaye, says he's honoured to receive the key to the place where he found his voice, adding he's committed to helping the next generation find theirs. In addition to winning four Grammy Awards, the singer is also recognized for his philanthropic contributions to both Toronto and international charities. Baylis, who says she has always been a big fan, is happy to share these experiences with her daughter. 'It just showed her a cool mom and daughter, and it's just something that she can do as well. Beyonce is a little older but, with seeing Blue there, it made it tangible for her.' Although there is no solid answer for what the future holds for Blue Ivy, it is widely recognized that the possibilities are limitless. 'We couldn't imagine that Beyonce would do all of these things that she could do. All we saw were people trying to put limitations on her,' said Brooks.
