
New medical check can tell a child's risk of becoming obese in later life - and it is twice as accurate as other methods
It is hoped the breakthrough will one day allow those at highest risk to get targeted support to prevent the excessive weight gain.
The test, which assesses a person's genetic risk of obesity, works twice as well as any other obesity risk predictor, researchers said.
As well as identifying children at risk of obesity, it can also predict how well obese adults will respond to targeted weight loss programmes.
Latest figures from NHS England show more than one in five children are overweight or obese when they start primary school, increasing to more than one in three by the time they leave.
Being overweight as a child increases the odds of being too fat as an adult, raising the risk of cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Academics used detail on genetic variations from more than 5 million people to create a tool called a polygenic risk score, which analyses people's genetics to work out their risk of developing obesity.
The tool could explain 17.6 per cent of variation in body mass index score (BMI) from people in the UK, they found.
Researchers, led by academics at the universities of Copenhagen and Bristol, tested whether the risk score was associated with obesity using datasets of the physical and genetic characteristics of more than 500,000 people.
This included checking the tool on people taking part in the 'Children of the 90s' study – a long-term study in Bristol tracking families as children age.
They found that it could successfully predict weight gain during childhood – from the age of just two and a half – through to adolescence.
Writing in the journal Nature Medicine, the authors said: 'Overall, these data show that polygenic scores have the potential to improve obesity prediction, particularly when implemented early in life.'
Roelof Smit, the study's lead author and an assistant professor at the University of Copenhagen, said: 'What makes the score so powerful is the consistency of associations between the genetic score and body mass index before the age of five and through to adulthood – timing that starts well before other risk factors start to shape their weight later in childhood.
'Intervening at this point could theoretically make a huge impact.'
He said BMI is not a good predictor for a child's obesity risk in later life but genetics can offer insight into the risk from early years.
'Essentially it's fixed at conception already very early in life, you're able to essentially quantify what someone's innate predisposition is for BMI,' he said.
'So, being able to say something about someone's innate biology for obesity risk.'
Meanwhile, the research team also looked at people taking part in 'intensive lifestyle intervention' programmes.
People with a higher risk score lost more weight, but were also more likely to regain it.
Professor Smit added: 'There is a huge amount of variation in how people respond to these interventions.
'What we observed was the higher someone's score was, the more they tended to respond to the intervention – people who had a higher score tended to lose more weight in the first year.
'And we also saw that people who had the higher scores tended to gain more weight.'
Dr Kaitlin Wade, associate professor in epidemiology at the University of Bristol and second author on the paper, said: 'Obesity is a major public health issue, with many factors contributing to its development, including genetics, environment, lifestyle and behaviour.
'These factors likely vary across a person's life, and we believe that some of these originate in childhood.
'We were delighted to contribute data from the Children of the 90s study to this exceptional and insightful research into the genetic architecture of obesity.
'We hope this work will contribute to detecting individuals at high risk of developing obesity at an earlier age, which could have a vast clinical and public health impact in the future.'
In 2022, 64 per cent of adults in England were estimated to be overweight or living with obesity.
Last week, MPs on the Health and Social Care Committee launched a review into how the Government is tackling the nation's obesity epidemic.
It comes after ministers pledged to 'launch a moonshot to end the obesity epidemic'.

Cricketer Graham Thorpe ‘spiralled into depression' after job loss, inquest told
The 55-year-old died on the morning of August 4 2024 after being struck by a train at a railway station in Surrey and his widow Amanda Thorpe later said he had taken his own life. An inquest at Surrey Coroner's Court in Woking on Wednesday heard that Mr Thorpe was diagnosed with anxiety and depression in 2018 and previously tried to take his own life in 2022. An incident involving a leaked video in Australia that year had left him 'distraught', the court was told. Mrs Thorpe said that up until 2020 there were no psychological issues in particular, apart from 'a bout of depression' in 2018 which did not affect his job. In a statement to the court, she said her husband 'found lockdown and Covid very difficult, very stressful'. While on tour in Australia, there was an 'incident involving a video that was taken that had adverse publicity'. Mr Thorpe shared a video with some friends which was leaked, and the incident was 'blown out of all proportion', leaving Mr Thorpe 'distraught', Mrs Thorpe's statement added. According to reports at the time, the video, filmed after a dismal Ashes series which England lost 4-0, showed Tasmanian police breaking up a drinking session involving both England and Australia players. Mrs Thorpe described it as a 'horrible' time, and said the later termination of his employment with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) was a 'real shock to Graham', which was the 'start of the decline of his mental health'. Coroner Jonathan Stevens read a statement from Mr Thorpe's GP, Dr Joan Munnelly, who said the cricketer was diagnosed with anxiety and depression in 2018. Dr Munnelly said an attempt to take his own life in 2022 resulted in a brain injury and he was in intensive care. Mr Thorpe spent time in a private hospital after he was discharged. By 2023, Mr Thorpe had suicidal thoughts, Mrs Thorpe said, and after Christmas he was 'in a terrible way'. The last contact between Mr Thorpe and those responsible for his psychiatric care was in June last year, and Mrs Thorpe felt that he should have been 'assessed properly', the court heard. In a statement, Mr Thorpe's father, Geoff Thorpe, said the video incident had 'caused catastrophic damage to him' and 'ultimately he lost his job', then quickly 'spiralled into depression'. Mr Thorpe became 'more and more desperate and helpless in the last year of his life', he added. Reading Geoff Thorpe's statement, the coroner said: 'You felt those who were responsible for Graham's safety and care could've done more to intervene.' Professor Nick Pierce, the ECB's chief medical officer, said in a statement that after Mr Thorpe's employment ended in February 2022 his private health insurance cover was extended until the May. In May the ECB was advised that Mr Thorpe had attempted to take his own life, and he explained that 'at no point during Graham's time at ECB had there been any concern regarding a risk of self harm or intent to end life'. He added that the ECB healthcare trust was approached about helping to cover the costs of treatment for Mr Thorpe at a hospital and the trustees agreed. Mr Thorpe was a mainstay in the England set-up for many years, first as a batter between 1993 and 2005 before spending 12 years in coaching roles. During a distinguished international career, he struck 16 Test hundreds for England, including a debut century against Australia at Trent Bridge in 1993, and represented his country 182 times in all formats. The inquest continues.

Scientists create temporary tattoo that detects if your drink has been spiked
Scientists have created a temporary tattoo that can detect if a drink has been spiked with just a couple drops. The sticker, which is applied to the skin, can detect the presence of the drug Y-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) even in low concentrations within one second. Commonly used to spike drinks, the central nervous system depressant drug Rohypnol, known as roofies or GHB, has been liked with sexual assault. It causes drowsiness, slows down your breathing and reduces heart rate. These drugs are colourless, tasteless and induce a stupor in victims that is similar to severe alcohol intoxication – leaving people vulnerable to sexual assault. The prevalence of spiking is high with 11 per cent of UK adults report being spiked at any point in their lives, according to Drinkaware. It added that 9 per cent of men and 13 per cent of women have reported their drink being spiked. There are ways people can protect themselves from drink spiking, with specialised strips and cards that change colour when exposed to these drugs. But many of these drug testing kits are conspicuous or take minutes to report a result. In the study published in the journal ACS Sensors, researchers in South Korea set out to develop a rapid-acting test for GHB that's worn on the skin using a tattoo-like sticker. Gyeong-Ji Kim, Jai Eun An, Kyong-Cheol Ko, Oh Seok Kwon and colleagues created the stickers by placing a mould over the top of a thin plastic film decorated with tattoo-like designs. They poured a gel mixture into the mould which contained a chemical receptor that turns red when it detects GHB. The back of the sticker was then coated with a diluted glue solution, so it could stick to skin. Researchers tested the sticker's ability to detect small amounts of GHB in a variety of beverages: whiskey, vodka, beer, soju (a Korean alcoholic beverage) and coffee. The drug was detected within one second of coming into contact with the contaminated drinks. It even changed colour when it detected levels of the drug lower than what would induce serious physiological symptoms – 0.01 micrograms of GHB in 1 millilitre of beverage. The sticker is designed to be able to discreetly dip a finger into a drink, touch the drop to the sticker and see the result almost immediately. A positive result displays for up to 30 days after detection, which could be important if it's needed as a form of evidence of tampering. The researchers say that their sticker technology is inexpensive and easy to manufacture, and it could be commercially available soon.

Jesy Nelson has detailed the symptoms of the rare pregnancy complications she experienced before giving birth to her twins. The former Little Mix star and her partner Zion Foster welcomed Ocean Jade Nelson-Foster and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster in May at 31 weeks and five days. She underwent a procedure for pre-twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, or TTTS, a condition that results in an unbalanced blood flow from one twin to another. The rare condition is thought to impact between 10 and 15 per cent of identical twins who share a placenta, and can be fatal without intervention.
