Poland says Russian secret service hired Colombian for arson attacks

WARSAW, July 29 (Reuters) - A Colombian national acting on behalf of Russian intelligence carried out two arson attacks in Poland last year, before setting fire to a bus depot in the Czech Republic, the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) said on Tuesday. ABW said the 27-year-old suspect set fire to two construction supply depots in Poland in May 2024 on orders from the Russians as part of a hybrid warfare campaign. "He was trained by a person connected to Russian intelligence services ... They taught him how to prepare incendiary materials, Molotov cocktails, and how to document these arson attacks," Jacek Dobrzynski, a spokesman for the coordinator of special services, told a press conference. Photographs and video recordings were used by Russian-language media for disinformation and propaganda purposes, ABW said. Russian media then falsely reported that one of the fires was at a logistics centre in the city of Radom used to store military equipment provided by Europe as aid for Ukraine, Dobrzynski said. The Russian embassy in Warsaw, responding to a Reuters inquiry, said it does not comment on such unfounded accusations. Dobrzyński said that following the arson attacks in Poland, the Colombian travelled to the Czech Republic, where he set fire to a bus depot. He was believed to be preparing another attack on a shopping mall when Czech authorities detained him. "He was sentenced to eight years in prison for acts of terrorism he committed (in the Czech Republic). In Poland ... he faces up to 10 years in prison or even a life sentence," said Dobrzyński, adding that the man had partially admitted guilt. Poland has been a target of sabotage, which officials say is part of a "hybrid war" waged by Moscow to destabilize countries that support Ukraine in the war with Russia, involving tactics like arson and cyberattacks. Russia has in the past denied involvement in such attacks.

Warwickshire MP joins Tamworth ambulance and aid delivery to Ukraine

An MP has set off on a three-day journey to help aid workers deliver an ambulance full of essential supplies to Ukraine. Rachel Taylor, who represents North Warwickshire and Bedworth, is joining Dawid Kozlowski who, since Russia invaded in 2022, has co-ordinated the delivery of more than 300 tonnes of aid to the pair set off from the LKQ Euro Car Parts headquarters at the Birch Coppice business park in Tamworth, Staffordshire, on Monday. Mr Kozlowski has led the company's aid efforts, donating 51 ambulances, more than £6,000 worth of prescription medicine and 1,000 Christmas presents to Ukraine. The latest campaign will see the ambulance handed over at the Poland/Ukraine border, before it is driven deeper into the country. "There are a lot of people living in poverty in Ukraine because of the war so I've tried to do something that will improve their quality of life," Mr Kozlowski said. "Ambulances will have a huge impact for them because it gives them more chances to survive."Ms Taylor added: "I just felt that our spotlight had gone off Ukraine a bit and yet people over there are still suffering. "Bombings every night, drone attacks - it just felt like the right thing to do to help out." Follow BBC Stoke & Staffordshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.

Protests against Zelenskyy as drones torment Ukraine

For the first time since the war began three years ago, Ukraine was the scene of major anti-government protests earlier this month. The Guardian's correspondent in the country, Luke Harding, heads to the streets of Kyiv to hear from protesters angry at Volodymyr Zelenskyy's attempt to strip two key anti-corruption bodies of their independence – a move that he now seems to be retreating from. Harding tells Helen Pidd that the developments come at a difficult time for Ukraine. The UN estimates that Russian attacks killed more civilians in June than in any other month since the war began. Moscow is suffering huge casualties too, but seems unlikely to stop its offensive any time soon as it slowly gains territory in eastern Ukraine. So what happens next in the war? And is there any chance that Zelenskyy's position is under threat?
