Joe Duffy to be named honorary Cork person at annual gala awards lunch
The Dublin native will be presented with a Republic of Cork passport and a commemorative piece of Cork Crystal at the Cork Person of the Year event which will be held in the Metropole Hotel.
He will present his last Liveline on Friday June 27.
RTÉ said it would run a process over the coming months to appoint Duffy's successor with an announcement expected in the autumn.
Born in January 1956, in Mountjoy Square, Dublin, and raised in Ballyfermot, Duffy originally pursued social work at Trinity College.
He became one of the first from his area to go to Trinity College and was actively involved in student politics and went on to serve as President of the Union of Students in Ireland.
He led protests on campus highlighting access to education and spent two weeks in Mountjoy Prison as a result.
After working in the probation service, he joined RTÉ originally as a radio producer, in 1989, and came to prominence as a reporter on the legendary Gay Byrne Show.
The 69-year-old has been a recipient of many awards during his acclaimed career, including a Jacob's Award in 1992 for his work on The Gay Byrne Show, various IMRO Awards and he was also inducted into the PPI Hall of Fame in 2013.
He has written his autobiography Just Joe and two award-winning history books, Children of the Rising and Children of the Troubles (with Freya McClements).
Awards organiser and founder Manus O'Callaghan said Mr Duffy is truly one of Ireland's great broadcasters. 'In lending a compassionate ear to his Liveline listeners for the past 27 years, he has given voice to many and shed light on innumerable significant societal issues.
"It will be a true honour to accept him into our ranks as an Honorary Corkperson at next January's lunch, in a year that also marks 100 years of radio in Ireland,' he added.
Each year the Cork Persons of Year Awards Scheme anoints a national figure, who's not from Cork but admired across the county, as an Honorary Cork Person.

Inside the personal life of Eamon Dunphy on milestone birthday
Broadcasting legend Eamon Dunphy is celebrating a milestone birthday this weekend as he enjoys his retirement from punditry on RTÉ. The former journalist and author stepped back from his punditry duties on the public service broadcaster in 2018 but is still regularly expressing his opinions on all things sport. Earlier this year, the sports star took to the stage for Three Wise Men alongside fellow legends Liam Brady and Johnny Giles. Pic: Stephen McCarthy / SPORTSFILE Eamon is well known for his strong opinions which can be both hilarious and controversial at times, but what do we know about the Dubliner's personal life? take a look… Eamon has been married twice — first marrying Sandra Tinsley when he was 21 years old in 1966. The Dublin native had a Catholic upbringing, and has often recalled going to Mass with his mother every morning from the age of seven years old. As Sandra was a Protestant, Eamon's faith was impacted after he was told by a priest in London to marry an Irish girl instead of Sandra, who he he had said was 'not a proper person.' The couple lived in London and had two children, Tim and Colette, with both now having kids of their own, making Eamon a grandfather. Following the demise of his first marriage, Eamon returned to Ireland and spent two years in Castletownshend in Cork. Eamon Dunphy with his daughter Colette and wife Jane in 2009. The pair had a lengthy relationship before tying the knot at the Unitarian Church on St Stephen's Green on September 2009. Following his departure from RTÉ, Eamon went on to have his own podcast, The Stand with Eamon Dunphy, which Jane produced. Eamon shares two children, Tim and Colette, with his first wife Sandra. In 2009, Colette married her now-husband Jeff Kane, with the couple going on to have two sons. Their eldest son, Braiden, was born with a condition called hypoplastic left-heart system. It is understood, Tim also has children with Eamon previously opening up on one of his grandchildren emigrating to Australia. Speaking to the Sunday Independent last year, Eamon detailed how his grandson had 'broke' the news to his parents, getting emotional as he admitting 'it's hard.'

RTÉ bosses nervous that Late Late presenter's split with wife might endanger deal
RTÉ bosses are hopeful that 'homebird' Patrick Kielty will renew his Late Late Show contract when it expires next year. The news comes as the popular host and his wife Cat Deeley announced their separation this week, after 13 years of marriage. Kielty has become a viewers' favourite as well as highly popular figure in RTÉ since taking over from Ryan Tubridy two years ago. The Dundrum, Co. Down man will be back on our screens for a new Late Late season next month. The Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty. Pic: Andres Poveda He has not given any indication if he will extend his three-year contract when it expires next year. Dublin-to-Belfast train commuters can often spot Kielty on a Wednesday or Thursday evening going home to the house he bought 25 years ago in Dundrum. An RTÉ source told this week: 'Usually he's [in Dublin] three nights. He goes back up home – I think people were surprised by that initially but that's what suits him. 'He's a homebird.' He is still deeply rooted in his community and regularly drops into his local, the Dundrum Inn. Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley. Pic: Stuart C. Wilson/Getty Images His two boys play GAA with the local team during the summer and were visitors to their granny Mary all year round, according to locals. Mary Kielty died in March of this year, but Deeley and the couple's children did not attend the funeral, raising eyebrows. The couple, their children and Deeley's parents spent last Christmas in his Dundrum house. Asked if it was hoped Kielty would renew his contract, a senior source in RTÉ told the broadcaster does not 'comment on individual contracts', but noted that staff are 'very much looking forward to him returning for The Late Late in September'. 'What happens in his personal life is his personal business,' the source added. RTÉ could not comment on whether or not it believed Kielty would be renewing his contract when it expires next year. A station source said: 'I'm sure people would be hoping he would stay on,' but they stressed: 'Who knows what his plans are? It's a good bit off.' Another RTÉ source described the presenter as 'a gent'. 'He's really easy company. He has a nice vibe about him. He's very relaxed. It's infectious in a good way. It sets a nice tone, I think.' Kielty's contract earns him €250,000 a year. The Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty. Pic: Andres Poveda This is dwarfed by the reported £600,000 (€688,645) per year Deeley is paid to host the hit ITV show, This Morning. Her current contract will keep her on the show's sofa until Spring 2026. But Deeley's side venture with her long-time friend Amanda Grossman, has been less lucrative and has recorded significant losses in the past two years. She co-owns a perfume company called Canyon International Limited, a vehicle for their brand E11even. The brand's website describes it as 'a luxury unisex fragrance oil that has a completely unique effect on the wearer and those around them'. The company was £62,605 (€71,844) in the red as of the end of March 2024, according to records. That was down on the previous year's deficit of £76,487 (€87,7656). Kielty's company Boxed Productions Limited, based in Co. Down, had healthy shareholder funds of £1,375,544 (€1,578,773) as of the end of March last year. He is the sole director of Boxed – listed as a 'performing arts' company – which is also the 100% shareholder of his Irish-registered company Pamanco Ireland Limited, of which Kielty is listed as co-director along with Co. Mayo businessman Pat Walsh. Pamanco, set up two days after Kielty was confirmed as Late Late host in May 2023, had net assets of €151,714 as of the end of July 2024, against a turnover of €286,656. Kielty and Deeley spent around €5.7m on their London home in 2023, and they have reportedly spent around the same figure renovating it. Their combined net worth has been variously estimated at between €13m and €26m. In a joint statement released earlier this week, the couple said they 'have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated'. 'There is no other party involved. 'We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected.'
