One in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to Prostate UK, who along with Macmillan Cancer Support, worked with Shane and the EastEnders writing team on the storyline.
And now, the popular actor and entertainer, reveals the huge impact Alfie's cancer story has had.
He said: 'I was going to events, men my age were coming up to me, but mostly women, wives saying 'thank you so much for covering that storyline, because my husband, my brother... they don't want to go to the doctors.'
'One guy in particular, and I don't personally take credit for saving his life, but that storyline did.
'He got checked. His daughter was a big EastEnders fan, and just quite casually said, come on, we love Alfie, you should go and get checked and he did just to appease his daughter.
'He found out he had prostate cancer but it was at the early stages, had it left in any longer it could have been fatal. So if we just save one life, that's the power of soaps.'
This week viewers will see Alfie once again struggle with intimacy, a common side effect of his cancer treatment, as he prepares to marry Kat, actress Jessie Wallace, 53, for a third time.
Shane filmed the emotional scenes before going off on an extended break where he spent a month touring with best mates, Bradley Walsh, Brian Conley and Joe Pasquale.
Dubbed The Prat Pack! the quartet performed all over the country, and provided Shane with a welcomed respite from Alfie's cancer story.
Shane said: 'It was one of the most brilliant experiences I've had in a long time.

'EastEnders are brilliant at letting me go off. I did a lot of stuff before I became Alfie so they're very accommodating, hopefully again next year I'll do the same thing, another tour.'
Shane also revealed how they turned down a big money deal from streaming giant Netflix to film the tour.
He said: 'We got approached by Netflix to go behind the scenes, and we were like, not a hope in hell!.'
Explaining how they weren't tempted by the offer he said: 'No, because once we do it the gags are gone. Maybe in five years time if we're all still alive we may do it.'
Shane was speaking on the red carpet at the British Soap Awards where EastEnders scooped eight gongs. Fans can watch the ceremony on ITVX.

All the signs Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty had split after they announced their shock separation following 12 years of marriage
After 12 years of marriage, Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty announced they were separating on Tuesday. But while the shock announcement was a surprise to fans, there were subtle signs that the former couple were on the rocks. Confirming their split in a joint statement, they said: 'We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved. 'We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment.' Cat and Patrick first met in 2002 while they hosted BBC talent show Fame Academy, however sparks didn't fly between the couple until 10 years later. After being friends for years, their friendship turned to romance thanks to his major gesture when he flew all the way from Belfast to Los Angeles for brunch with Cat. One of the signs that their relationship wasn't rock solid, was that Cat notably did not attend Patrick's mother Mary's funeral back in March. It was reported that she stayed home in order to support their two young children, Milo, nine, and James, seven, who were suffering the loss of their grandmother. Patrick, 54, looked bereft as he carried Mary's coffin through his home village, where he was joined by close family and friends at the Church of the Sacred Heart. A spokesperson for Cat told Daily Mail at the time: 'Cat remained at home to be there for her two young children before and after school on this very sad day.' Patrick's mother, who was in her 80s, passed away at her home in the village of Dundrum on Saturday. A death notice said Mary 'will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her entire family circle, neighbours and friends.' And the couple's social media was another telling sign of their impending split. While he may be less active than Cat, Patrick's last post about her was back in February 2024 when she landed the This Morning job. He wrote at the time: 'I didn't know what a morning person actually was until I met this woman. She gets up every day with a smile on her face. A 5.30am, whistling in the shower, smile on her face. Then downs two coffees, and gives you the look. The "what the f*€K's wrong with you, let's do this" look. 'It's not a pretend smile. And it's not just some mornings. It's every morning. Which is bloody difficult cos she's married to me. I should also mention she likes a chat. To anyone. About anything. Anywhere. 'If there's anyone in the world made for a show called @thismorning, it's this human. Strap yourself in @benshephardofficial And welcome to my world. We couldn't be prouder of you @catdeeley Go get 'em Mama ! ❤️.' Meanwhile Patrick hasn't featured on Cat's Instagram since the same day as his gushing This Morning tribute when she reposted it, despite the fact that she shares social media posts on a more than weekly basis. Another sign of trouble between the pair was a lack of public appearances in the last year. Pictures showed the pair enjoying a summer holiday to St Tropez last August, where they looked in high spirits. But their last red carpet appearance together was as far back as September 18, 2023, when they attended the Ballywalter London premiere at The May Fair Hotel. And a month before they looked loved-up at the launch of fragrance brand e11even founded by Cat and Amanda Grossman. This came just two months after they attended the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) Awards together in May 2023. Previously talking about how they got together he told the Daily Mail: 'Well there had always been a spark between us, but either she was with someone or I was, and then she moved to LA, so opportunities for something to develop were limited. 'Unless someone was stupid enough to get on a plane, nothing would have happened. 'Cat was in LA and I was in Northern Ireland, so I texted her to wish her a happy birthday. 'When she said she was having a birthday lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel, I said I'd be there. She told me to go to sleep as I was drunk. 'That was 2am. I got up at 5am, went to Belfast airport for 6am, got the 7.15am flight to Heathrow, landed at 8.30am, took off again at 9.40am and arrived in LA at 1.15pm. 'I was at the Beverly Hills Hotel by 2.15pm. When I walked in, Cat looked at me and said: "Oh, you're good!"' They married in a secret, intimate ceremony in Rome in 2012 with their close family and friends present. A wedding photo showed the pair looking blissfully happy as they enjoy a celebratory drink at their wedding reception. The couple lived in California for over 14 years as she presented So You Think You Can Dance but they put their Beverly Hills mansion on the market for $4.9 million (£3.8 million). They moved back to North London in 2020, prior to Cat securing her job at This Morning amid fears of gun violence following an incident in which Patrick had to hide from a gunman in a Los Angeles mall.

Alfie commits a national atrocity by trying to get rid of an EastEnders legend
Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) has tried to do something truly, truly awful in EastEnders – and failed miserably. Wanting to make his mark on The Queen Vic, he prepared to get rid of Walford icon Tracey the barmaid (Jane Slaughter). Silent Tracey has graced the BBC soap since the very first episode – becoming quite the fan-favourite during that time. The character is, of course, one of the many named supporting characters that help cement Albert Square as a real life area in East London. Originally operating a flower stall on the Bridge Street Market, she was taken on as barmaid by Frank Butcher (Mike Reid) in 1989. Her presence in the pub often helps explain other characters' absence from work, allowing them to be at the centre of the drama elsewhere. On a number of occasions that position has been threatened, though without fail, our Trace' always worms her way back into the fold. In tonight's episode, just 24 hours after learning he was the new landlord of the new pub, Alfie decided that he was going to have to make some staffing cuts to be able to afford their new venture. Waltzing into Walford East, he told Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) that he was resigning from his role at the Minute Mart. In disbelief, Ravi told him that he actually didn't have a job to resign from after doing a disappearing act some weeks ago. As viewers know, he headed to Barcelona to track down estranged step-daughter Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), to no avail. Alfie tried to sweeten the deal, saying he had a perfect replacement. …Tracey! Ravi was furious that he was prepared to ditch such a valued member of staff, who has given decades of her life to the boozer. Nevertheless, Alf' continued with his decision to ditch her and headed back to the pub to break the difficult news. Tracey brushed him off, saying that she'd turned down Ravi's job offer and was more than happy to stay at The Vic. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Emmerdale legend released from prison as a shock decision is made
Joe Tate's (Ned Porteous) meddling has caused a feud to form between Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and Sam Dingle (James Hooton) in Emmerdale. Joe was put in charge of Kim Tate's (Claire King) grand plan a few days ago. As she left for Dubai, Joe decided to focus on getting Butlers Farm from Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb). He pounced on his prey after learning that Moira had received more bad news from the water company. Due to Moira being in a vulnerable position when Joe put forward the idea of her selling, it meant she was very tempted. Moira changed her mind on signing the contract when she discovered Joe had paid Noel from the water company to deliberately reject her appeal. She then faced a nightmare when two teens broke into a barn, and immediately thought that Joe was responsible for organising it. At Home Farm, Joe told Moira that his plans, as ruthless as they are, never involve putting children in danger. Moira didn't believe him and went to punch Joe, but poor Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) got in the way. Moira was arrested and taken to the station in this evening's episode and while this was happening, Cain was on the warpath. He found Lydia and told her to lie to the police if she got questioned about Moira hitting her. Lydia was unsure about this, but Cain threatened her and said she didn't have a choice. While Cain was playing bad cop, Joe took a different approach. He spoke to Lydia and Sam and said that he likes them both, and said Moira shouldn't get away with an act of violence. More Trending Moira ended up getting released from prison due to the complaint getting dropped. Unfortunately though, that wasn't the end of the matter.
