India eyes new markets after record-breaking exports: Tea Board

Times of Oman22-05-2025
New Delhi: India's tea exports have reached a record high, with the country exporting 255 million kilograms of tea worth $924 million in 2024.
To sustain this growth, the Tea Board of India is exploring new international markets while maintaining traditional ones.
Tea Board India's Deputy Chairman Saurav Pahari on Wednesday highlighted that India's tea exports have increased by 10% from 2023, reaching a 10-year high.
Speaking at an event celebrating International Tea Day in the national capital, Pahari said, "Indian exports are doing very well. It's unprecedented. We exported USD 924 million worth of tea. We're now reaching out to newer markets while maintaining our traditional ones."
India is currently the second-largest tea exporter, surpassing Sri Lanka. The Tea Board is targeting non-traditional markets like Canada and Australia, which have shown increasing interest in Indian tea varieties.
The Board plans to enhance tea tasting infrastructure across growing regions and introduce globally certified courses to develop professional tea tasters and establish centers for tea tasting certification that will promote brand value and export readiness.
The Tea Board will engage youth in tea-growing regions as master trainers to build a skilled workforce.
"Youth in tea growing regions will be engaged as master trainers by partnering with companies," Pahari explained. The Board also announced plans to collaborate with the Spice Board to create innovative tea flavours for export markets, leveraging India's expertise in both sectors.
The comprehensive approach combining market expansion, infrastructure development, and skilled workforce training demonstrates India's commitment to strengthening its position in the global tea market.
India accounts for 10 per cent of the world's tea exports, sending tea to more than 25 countries, including the UAE, Iran, Russia, the USA, the UK, Iraq, and others. Black tea accounts for 96% of exports.
The government has also undertaken several initiatives through the Tea Board, including the formation of more than 300 Self-Help Groups (SHG), more than 400 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPO) and 17 Farmer Producer Companies (FPC).

White House denies Pakistan media reports on potential Trump visit

Washington DC : The White House on Friday (local time) shunned media reports circling around US President Donald Trump's visit to Pakistan, stating that there has been no such presidential travel plans. "A trip to Pakistan has not been scheduled at this time", the White House confirmed to ANI. The White House has not announced or confirmed any such travel arrangements, contrary to what has been reported by news channels in Pakistan. There have been reports circulating in Pakistani news outlets regarding potential presidential travel plans. Earlier in the day, some local television news channels reported, citing sources, that Trump was expected to visit Pakistan in September. The news channels said that Trump would also visit India after arriving in Islamabad in September. The channels later withdrew their reports, Dawn reported. Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan told Dawn, "We have no information about this matter." George W Bush was the last US president to visit Pakistan in 2006. As about Trump's travel plans, US White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Thursday (local time) said that he will visit Scotland from July 25-July 29. Leavitt said that Trump is set to hold trade-related talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during the visit. "US President Donald Trump will travel to Scotland, where he will visit both Turnberry and Aberdine from July 25-July 29. During the visit, Trump will meet again with Prime Minister Starmer to refine the great trade deal that was brokered between the United States and the United Kingdom," she said. Leavitt further said that Trump and First Lady Melania will visit Windsor Castle to meet King Charles later this year. "And the President and the First Lady will travel to the United Kingdom for an official state visit from September 17-September 19 later this fall. This will mark a truly unprecedented second state visit for President Trump and he is honoured and looking forward to meeting with His Majesty the King at Windsor Castle," she said.

Stocks steady ahead of tech earnings as Fed drama confounds

SINGAPORE: Asian stocks marked time on Thursday ahead of earnings from heavyweight technology companies and as market anxiety lingered over the uncertain tenure of Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell. TSMC, the world's main producer of advanced AI chips, is expected to post a jump in second-quarter profit to record levels, though US tariffs and a strong Taiwan dollar could weigh on its outlook. Profits for streaming giant Netflix, due later on Thursday, are also on investors' radar. "With Netflix having outperformed the S&P 500 year-to-date by a sizeable 33 percentage points, and the street fully subscribed to the bullish investment case, Netflix will need to blow the lights out with a solid beat and raise," said Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up just 0.07 per cent and the Nikkei rose 0.2 per cent. Ending what would have been the biggest foreign takeover of a Japanese company, Canadian retailer Alimentation Couche-Tard withdrew its $47 billion takeover bid for Seven & i Holdings, citing a lack of constructive engagement by the operator of 7-Eleven convenience stores. Shares of Seven & i Holdings slid to a three-month low and were last down nearly 8 per cent. European futures jumped as EUROSTOXX 50 futures rose 0.6 per cent and FTSE and DAX futures added about 0.4 per cent each. Nasdaq futures and S&P 500 futures fell just over 0.1 per cent each. Also dominating the market mood was confusion over Fed Chair Powell's future at the central bank, after initial news that US President Donald Trump was likely to fire Powell soon sent stocks and the dollar sliding. Trump was quick to deny the reports, restoring some calm to volatile markets, but he kept the door open to the possibility and renewed his criticism of the central bank chief for not lowering interest rates. "I think the most likely outcome is for Powell to stay on until the end of his term next year. Having said that, this is not the first time, so there are going to be episodes of volatility in the dollar as a result of political noise," said Carlos Casanova, UBP's senior economist for Asia. The dollar was on a fragile footing on Thursday, after having lost ground overnight on worries that the Fed's independence could come under threat. The euro was last down 0.14 per cent at $1.1625 while sterling eased 0.17 per cent to $1.3395 after both currencies made gains in the previous session. The dollar rose slightly to 98.47 against a basket of currencies, having lost 0.33 per cent overnight. US Treasury yields also steadied after falling on Wednesday, due to expectations that Powell's removal could lead to quicker and deeper rate cuts, with the two-year yield last at 3.9087 per cent. The benchmark 10-year yield was little changed at 4.4754 per cent. In Australia, the Aussie slid after data showed domestic employment rose only marginally in June as the jobless rate jumped to the highest since late 2021. It last traded 0.56 per cent lower at $0.6492. Elsewhere, oil prices rose on Thursday, with Brent crude futures up 0.4 per cent at $68.78 a barrel. US crude futures gained 0.5 per cent to $66.71 per barrel. — Reuters

Altogether, advanced technologies, defined as 7-nanometer and more advanced, represented 74 per cent of TSMC's wafer revenue, underscoring the company's leadership in cutting-edge chip manufacturing. Looking ahead, the company expects continued growth in the third quarter of 2025. Based on current business conditions and assuming an exchange rate of NTD 29.0 to USD 1, TSMC forecasts revenue to be in the range of USD 31.8 billion to USD 33.0 billion. The company anticipates a gross profit margin between 55.5 per cent and 57.5 per cent, and an operating profit margin between 45.5 per cent and 47.5 per cent.
