Member loses HK$38,000 as Hong Kong branch of Singaporean 1880 club faces probe
The sudden closure of 1880 Hong Kong, a private members club based out of Singapore, left members reeling, with one losing HK$38,000, paid out for a full-year membership just two months prior, while others have complained to Customs, alleging a violation of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance.
The club, located in Quarry Bay's Two Taikoo Place, operated for only seven months before shutting down last Friday due to 'cash flow difficulties'. It has been accused of owing rent and wages to more than 100 employees, with some staff seeking help from the labour authorities.
Hong Kong Customs said in response to queries from the Post, that they have received complaints and are investigating. Enforcement action will be taken if any breaches of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance are found.
It added that it is an offence if a trader intends not to supply a product or has no reasonable grounds to believe they can supply it within a specified or reasonable period. Offenders could face a fine of HK$500,000 (US$63,760) and five years' imprisonment upon conviction.
A marketing professional, who wished to remain anonymous, joined the club in late March for its co-working space and networking opportunities, paying HK$24,000 in joining fees and HK$14,000 for a full-year membership.
'We found that [the membership] is helpful for business, especially on the networking part … they kept assuring us that they have already operated in Singapore for more than seven years and they are a reputable membership club,' she told the Post.

'The liaison office was angry at her move and also the party for allowing the incident to happen,' a DAB source said.

2 arrested, 1,075 fake tickets seized ahead of Jay Chou Hong Kong concerts
Hong Kong police have arrested two people and seized more than 1,000 fake tickets with a face value of over HK$2 million (US$256,410) in total for concerts by Mandopop superstar Jay Chou this weekend. The force said on Saturday that officers arrested a man, 23, and a 17-year-old girl during an operation the previous afternoon at Hung Hom MTR station when members of a local syndicate were allegedly making a deal. Two counterfeit tickets were seized from the pair. Officers also found another 1,073 fake concert tickets with a face value of HK$1,880 each, or more than HK$2 million in total, in a hotel room in To Kwa Wan. The pair were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and possessing a false instrument and had been detained for investigation, the force said. The fake tickets were of poor quality. Hong Kong man arrested over 9kg narcotics haul worth HK$8.8 million
Hong Kong customs officers have seized about 9kg (19.8lbs) of suspected narcotics with an estimated market value of HK$8.8 million (US$1.12 million) and arrested a man on suspicion of drug trafficking. The operation took place in San Tin, near Yuen Long in the New Territories, on Friday night. Officers intercepted a man acting suspiciously and discovered about 1.1kg of what was believed to be crack cocaine in a thermal bag he was carrying, according to the Customs and Excise Department. He was arrested and officers escorted him to a village house nearby. Officers searched the premises and seized another 4.7kg of suspected cocaine and about 3.2kg of suspected crack cocaine, in addition to what appeared to be packaging paraphernalia. The suspect, a 27-year-old who claimed to be unemployed, was charged with two counts of trafficking in dangerous drugs. He is expected to appear in Fanling Court on Monday.
