The 19-year-old Blackhawks star confirmed he decided to turn down an invite from Team Canada to play at the 2025 IIHF World Championship in Sweden and Denmark.
Speaking to The Athletic's Mark Lazerus, Bedard admitted it wasn't an easy call but made clear that he is not dwelling on it nor feeling bad about letting that train go.
'I was at peace with my decision not to,' Bedard said. 'When you get an opportunity like that, it's hard not to go. I love playing hockey, and I knew a lot of guys over there and knew how special that opportunity was, to play for your country.'
Team Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Denmark.

Bedard said his focus is on preparing for his third NHL season after what he called a physically and mentally taxing year. He played all 82 games, scoring 23 goals and 67 points in the regular season.
'For me, I felt the best decision to feel the best for next year and put myself in the best position for Oct. 5 or whenever our first game is, was not to go this year,' Bedard said. 'You want to be there, you miss out. But I feel good about the decision, for sure.'

For Bedard, the offseason is about improving his game and skill set, particularly focusing on his skating and speed, a key area where he feels he still needs to catch up a bit.

'I think the biggest thing is speed and explosiveness,' Bedard said. 'That's always been my big thing. Just kind of learn about my body a bit and how to keep consistency throughout the year and stuff like that. Just try to learn as much as I can. Hopefully it's a successful offseason.'

Former Penguins Forward Anthony Beauvillier Re-Signs With Capitals

The Anthony Beauvillier experiment was a success for the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2024-25 season. They signed him to a one-year deal last July with the hopes that he would bounce back after a rough 2023-24 season, and he did exactly that, scoring 13 goals and finishing with 20 points in 63 games. He spent the rest of the season with the Washington Capitals after they acquired him at the trade deadline from the Penguins for a second-round pick. Advertisement Beauvillier had two goals and five points in 18 regular-season games with the Capitals before finishing the playoffs with two goals and six points in 10 games. The Capitals loved what they saw and signed him to a two-year, $5.5 million contract. The deal will carry an average annual value of $2.75 million. That's an excellent price for Beauvillier, who figures to slot into a middle-six role and can also play in the top six should injuries arise. The Capitals are coming off a second-round playoff exit at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes. TORONTO (AP) — Myles Straw scored the winning run on a throwing error by pitcher Sam Bachman in the 10th inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays extended their winning streak to six games by beating the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Friday night. Straw, the automatic runner, scored from second when Bachman fielded Ernie Clement's sacrifice bunt and overthrew first base. Giménez tweaked his left ankle covering second base on a steal Wednesday and did not play Thursday. He was scheduled for an MRI. Blue Jays left-hander Eric Lauer set down his first 12 batters before Adell doubled to begin the fifth. Adell was initially called out trying to advance but the Angels challenged and the call was overturned following a replay review.
