Ohtani to hit leadoff for NL in All-Star Game, followed by Ronald Acuña Jr. of host Braves

Shohei Ohtani will bat leadoff as the designated hitter for the National League in Tuesday night's All-Star Game at Truist Park, and the Los Angeles Dodgers star will be followed in the batting order by left fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. of the host Atlanta Braves.
Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte will hit third in the batting order announced Monday by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, followed by Los Angeles first baseman Freddie Freeman, San Diego third baseman Manny Machado, Dodgers catcher Will Smith, Chicago Cubs right fielder Kyle Tucker, New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor and Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Pittsburgh right-hander Paul Skenes will start his second straight All-Star Game, Major League Baseball announced last week. Detroit left-hander Tarik Skubal will make his first All-Star start for the American League.
'I think when you're talking about the game, where it's at, these two guys … are guys that you can root for, are super talented, are going to be faces of this game for years to come,' Roberts said.
Detroit second baseman Gleyber Torres will lead off for the AL, followed by Tigers left fielder Riley Greene, New York Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge, Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh, Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr,. Baltimore designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn, Tampa Bay third baseman Junior Caminero, Tigers center fielder Javy Báez and Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson.
Ohtani led off for the AL in the 2021 All-Star Game, when the two-way sensation also was the AL's starting pitcher. He hit leadoff in 2022, then was the No. 2 hitter hitter for the AL in 2023 and for the NL last year after leaving the Los Angeles Angels for the Dodgers.
Skenes and Skubal are 1-2 in average four-seam fastball velocity among those with 1,500 or more pitches this season, Skenes at 98.2 mph and Skubal at 97.6 mph, according to MLB Statcast.
A 23-year-old right-hander, Skenes is 4-8 despite a major league-best 2.01 ERA for the Pirates, who are last in the NL Central. The 2024 NL Rookie of the Year has 131 strikeouts and 30 walks in 131 innings.
Skubal, a 28-year-old left-hander, is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. He is 10-3 with a 2.23 ERA, striking out 153 and walking 16 in 121 innings.

Even after an exciting, plucky Detroit Tigers team pushed its way into the postseason last year, it would have been far-fetched to predict the production the club has engineered midway through 2025. So I don't really think that I've accomplished much until I win a championship." Sparking the team's turnaround from the dugout, former World Series champion manager A.J. Hinch knows better than the most of the players in the Tigers' clubhouse what it takes to finish a season as the last team standing. "I am very proud of where we're at, at the midway point of the season," said Hinch, who managed the 2017 Houston Astros to the title. "When you start looking at the series that we've won, there are a lot more series won than lost, so I think we're in a good position to have a very special summer. We just have to do a lot of work to get there. We have a good team. We have a winning team that I'll feel can stack up against anybody." Although the club's All-Star hitters — Greene, Javier Baez, Gleyber Torres and Zack McKinstry combined to go 0-for-8, and Skubal and Casey Mize combined to allow three runs on four hits in 1⅔ innings — the fact that Detroit, which lost 96 games three years ago, had players littered across the field is a testament to the present and future of what Tigers baseball has become.

In the second inning, Ohtani grounded out to first, one pitch after he narrowly missed a homer with a hard-hit foul ball to right field. "I just wanted to be aggressive, no matter whether I end up hitting a home run or striking out," Ohtani said. "My base hit wasn't an impressive one, but it was good." "I had a good time getting to know players I've seen only on TV and understanding their personalities." Ohtani, who hit his first All-Star Game home run last year, was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the fifth. The AL rallied from a 6-0 deficit and tied the score in a two-run ninth when Steven Kwan of the Cleveland Guardians delivered a game-tying infield single with two outs. The annual Midsummer Classic then went to the Home Run Derby-style swing-off, with three hitters from each league getting three swings each.
