Search for missing cockfighters begins at Philippine lake
Fifteen police officers are under investigation over a spate of mysterious disappearances in 2022 in the country's huge cockfighting industry.
The case erupted back into the public consciousness last month with the televised appearance of a witness claiming to know where bodies had been submerged in Lake Taal, located about two hours south of the capital.
Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla has since said he has "multiple witnesses" who can identify the location of the missing in the lake, which spans more than 230 square kilometres (89 square miles).
"The purpose of (Thursday's mission) is to ... identify the area covered by the search, see initial water conditions and to measure the depth of covered area," the justice department said in a statement.
The Philippine Coast Guard will participate in the preliminary assessment alongside police.
National Police Chief Nicolas Torre this week said authorities needed to act swiftly.
"The typhoon season is coming in," he told journalists on Tuesday.
"We are moving fast to at least try to locate the bodies. We know that it is very, very challenging."
Remulla on Friday said he had requested technical assistance from Japan including help with mapping the lake bed, parts of which are as deep as 172 metres (564 feet).
The Japanese embassy in Manila told AFP it had received the request without providing further details.
But Torre believes the Philippines had the necessary equipment on hand to begin the search.
"We have a very, very robust shipping industry here and in other parts of the Philippines, so we can do it."
Filipinos from all walks of life wager millions of dollars on matches every week between roosters who fight to the death with razor-sharp metal spurs tied to their legs.
The sport, banned in many other countries, survived coronavirus pandemic restrictions by going online, drawing many more gamblers who use their mobile phones to place wagers.
Former president Rodrigo Duterte banned the livestreaming of cockfights shortly before leaving office in 2022, but it has continued due to lax enforcement.

Third person charged with murder of Sunshine Coast man Zdravko Bilic
Police have charged a third person with the murder of a Sunshine Coast man who was found dead in his front yard last week. Zdravko Bilic, 57, was allegedly murdered last Sunday night during an alleged break-in. His body was discovered outside his Warana home the next day, with two stab wounds to his stomach. An 18-year-old woman from Bethania, south of Brisbane, was charged with murder on Tuesday. She was also charged with unauthorised use of a motor vehicle, enter dwelling with intent by break, enter dwelling and commit, attempted enter premises with intent to commit indictable offence, and attempted enter dwelling and commit. She is expected to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Wednesday. It follows the arrest of two teenage boys, aged 15 and 17, who were charged with his murder last Thursday. Their cases were mentioned in the Maroochydore Children's Court last week, where they were remanded in custody. Last week, Detective Inspector Chris Toohey said Queensland Police would allege the murder occurred at around 11:30pm on Sunday, July 13, during an altercation after an alleged break-in. The victim's wife, skincare business founder Gry Tomte, was interstate at the time. Mr Bilic's body was discovered when Ms Tomte asked a neighbour to check on him because she had not heard from him on Monday. Mr Bilic has been remembered as a "gentle person" with a "beautiful energy" who was heavily involved in the local community. In a statement on social media last week, Ms Tomte said he was her "everything". "There is no way I can capture the immense grief I feel over losing the most beautiful man. My world for 28 years," she wrote.

Search resumes for remains of alleged murdered Port Lincoln man Julian Story
South Australian Police are set to resume the search for the missing remains of alleged murder victim Julian Story, following the development of new "investigational leads". Warning: This story contains details of an alleged crime that some readers may find distressing. Port Lincoln woman and former Beauty and the Geek contestant Tamika Chesser, 34, was charged with the alleged murder of her partner Mr Story and appeared in court last month. Mr Story's beheaded and dismembered body was found by emergency services on Thursday, June 19. SAPOL believe the 39-year-old died sometime around midnight on Tuesday, June 17. In the days following the discovery of Mr Story's body, major crime detectives, local police and emergency services all conducted extensive searches around Port Lincoln for his unrecovered head, without success. That search was paused on July 1, but will now reopen. "Police have reviewed a significant amount of CCTV footage since the incident which has provided a number of investigational leads," Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said. "We appreciate the ongoing assistance the community of Port Lincoln has provided throughout the investigation. "New search areas have been identified and, by undertaking these renewed searches, we hope to find Julian's missing remains, which will give comfort to his family and allow them to peacefully lay him to rest." On Tuesday afternoon SAPOL were seen using an excavator to clear dense bamboo at a site near the Lincoln Highway, but police have not commented on whether this is related to their investigation or where they plan to search. The Flinders Highway property where the murder is alleged to have taken place is located about 800 metres uphill from Boston Bay's waters. Early searches were conducted around neighbouring streets and in the areas surrounding the nearby Axel Stenross boat ramp. Emergency services assisted police in searching reserves, parks, bushland and the ocean around the pier and bay area. Authorities earlier released footage of the accused, Tamika Chesser, seeking to track her movements between midnight on June 17 and the discovery of Mr Story's body around 3:30pm two days later. Mr Story was a Port Lincoln local, whose family are prominent volunteers in the community. The grisly nature of the alleged crime has generated significant media interest — both locally and abroad. Ms Chesser appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court on June 27, via video link from James Nash House psychiatric facility. She is yet to enter a plea and will next front court in December.
