Saquon Barkley 'shocked' to be named to Donald Trump's presidential sports council, says he won't be participating
It appears that that was news to Barkley.
Barkley said Monday that he was "shocked" that his name was included as a council member and that he will not be participating. The All-Pro Philadelphia Eagles running back addressed the subject with reporters at training camp Monday.

"A couple of months ago, it was brought to my team about the council," Barkley said. "So, I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like that I'm going to be super busy, so me and my family thought it probably was in our best interest to not accept that.
"Was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned, but I'm assuming it's something great. So I appreciate it. But was a little shocked when my name was mentioned."
The White House previously issued a news release about the council that named several prominent athletes and sports figures who would participate, Barkley included.
"The council will include executive director Catherine Granito, chair Bryson DeChambeau, Saquon Barkley, Gary Bettman, Nick Bosa, Harrison Butker, Cody Campbell, Roger Goodell, Wayne Gretzky, Nelly Korda, Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Mariano Rivera, Tony Romo, Annika Sörenstam, Tua Tagovailoa, Lawrence Taylor, Matthew Tkachuk, and Mariano Rivera," the statement reads.
None of the other athletes named have said that they won't be participating. Taylor and "Triple H" flanked Trump during a news conference addressing the council.
Barkley, a three-time Pro Bowler who earned NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2024 during Philadelphia's run to the Super Bowl championship, has previously made public appearances with Trump.
Barkley golfed with Trump in April in New Jersey, then flew with Trump to Washington D.C. and visited the White House ahead of the Eagles' official visit to commemorate their Super Bowl victory. Barkley's visit prompted criticism, to which he responded on social media that he respects the office of the president.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday floated a plan to grant legal status to undocumented immigrant farmworkers, claiming that foreign-born migrants are 'naturally' better suited than 'inner city' Americans to menial agricultural jobs. 'People that live in the inner city are not doing that work. They've tried, we've tried, everybody tried. They don't do it,' Trump said. 'These people do it naturally. They don't get a bad back.' Trump has spoken for months about creating some kind of legal status for undocumented immigrants who work in the agriculture and hospitality industries, both of which are highly dependent on them. He even briefly approved a pause in immigration enforcement actions aimed at California's vast agricultural heartland in the Central Valley, but it was quickly reversed. Big Ag and giant hospitality firms have lobbied the White House for a reprieve from his much-hyped mass deportation plan, which aims to oust up to 20 million undocumented immigrants from the U.S., regardless of how long they have lived here. The corporate titans, many of whom are also Republican donors, point out that America would have no way of feeding itself or running its restaurants and hotels without undocumented immigrants, a rare point of common ground with progressive advocates for immigrants. Any formal program to carve out a new legal status to groups of undocumented immigrants is likely to spark strong opposition from right-wing hard-liners, who decry such compromises as amnesty for law-breaking illegal immigrants. Jaxson Dart is QB3 on Giants' first depth chart
Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart has work to go to become the starter. Supposedly. The 25th pick in the 2025 draft lands at third on the team's initial depth chart of 2025, behind Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. Rounding out the quarterback room is Tommy DeVito, at fourth string. Per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, the actual practices have had Dart taking reps after Wilson and before Winston. The move could be an effort to show that Dart will earn his spot by overcoming obstacles, eventually moving past Winston before leapfrogging Wilson. Alternatively (or perhaps additionally), the positioning could be aimed at showcasing Winston, who could be the odd man out when it's time to trim the depth chart from four to three. Before releasing Winston, it would make sense to try to trade him. DeVito is destined to be cut and, if he clears waivers, to sign with the practice squad. The bigger question is whether the Giants keep Winston on the 53-man roster, to go along with Wilson and Dart. The biggest question is when will Dart play? In 2004, Kurt Warner was benched despite a 5-4 record because the Giants were ready to flip the switch to Eli Manning.
