Tax digitalisation to simplify taxpayers ‘ affairs, increase compliance

The Sun05-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The initiative by the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board (IRB) in driving comprehensive digital transformation will simplify taxpayers' affairs nationwide, thereby increasing compliance levels.
Its Chief Officer of Operations, Marsidi Zelika, said that the digital transformation does not only focus on migrating services to online platforms, but also involves changing the work structure, mindset and operational strategy to ensure more efficient and user-friendly tax services.
'It includes systems such as MyTax, ByrHASiL, e-Filing and now e-Invoicing, all created to enable taxpayers to manage their tax affairs quickly, easily and securely without having to go to the counter,' he said.
He said this when appearing as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme, with the title 'Digitalisation of HASiL: Simplifying Taxpayer Affairs', last night.
He said that the digital system, such as e-Filing, which is equipped with automatic calculation and final review functions, helps users avoid common mistakes such as incorrect tax calculations and incomplete data.
'The data integration function, automatic verification and the use of a single identity-based system through MyTax ensure that taxpayers' information is consistent and easy to track,' he said, adding that the system is also linked to Monthly Tax Deduction (PCB) information from employers.
Touching on the latest initiative, Marsidi said the implementation of e-Invoice, which started in August last year in phases, has received an encouraging response from the public, especially small and medium-sized businesses.
'As of June 4, 2025, more than 313.4 million e-Invoices have been recorded involving 33,391 taxpayers. This clearly shows a very positive reception for this digital initiative,' he said.
According to him, the implementation of e-Invoice does not just replace printed invoices, but also opens up opportunities for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to restructure their business accounting systems more systematically and effectively.
The MyInvois portal and application, which are offered for free, allow users to access, send and store transaction documents digitally, thus reducing the risk of losing documents and speeding up administrative matters.
To ensure compliance with the new system, Marsidi said the IRB also provided a one-stop reference centre through the e-Invoice microsite as well as guidelines, video tutorials and a 24/7 e-Invoice help desk, in addition to e-Invoice counters at all IRB.
'We would like to encourage taxpayers, especially MSMEs, not to wait until the last minute. Start preparing now, access all available guidance, and if there is any confusion, contact us. The IRB is always ready to help,' he said.
Marsidi emphasised that the digitalisation efforts implemented by IRB are in line with the National Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL) and the government's aspiration to empower the public sector holistically through technology.
'We hope to develop a tax service ecosystem based on convenience, trust and security. Our focus is to provide borderless services that can be accessed from any location, at any time,' he said.
He also called on all taxpayers to take full advantage of the digital facilities provided and support the digitalisation of public services.
'Use MyTax, e-Filing and MyInvois to make your business easier. Together, let us make this digital transformation a success for a more efficient and transparent Malaysia,' he said.

85% of peninsula users won't be impacted by new power tariff, says Fadillah

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has identified that 85% of the population in Peninsular Malaysia will not be impacted by the new electricity tariff structure that came into effect on July 1, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said this is because a significant portion of domestic users, as well as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), are eligible for rebates. 'The key focus now is to promote efficient energy use. Those who consume energy more efficiently will be eligible for rebates,' he said during the oral question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (July 23). The new tariff structure, announced on June 20, is designed to reflect actual supply costs and ensure fairer cost distribution. Unlike the previous system, it introduces multiple components such as energy charges, capacity charges, network charges, and retail charges, and shifts from an economic sector-based rate to one based on voltage connection levels. 'This approach enhances transparency. The government has put in place safeguards so the impact on domestic users remains minimal. In fact, domestic users consuming 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) or less monthly will be exempt from paying retail charges,' he said. Those consuming up to 1,000 kWh will also receive energy efficiency incentives, while MSMEs using less than 200 kWh monthly will benefit from similar assistance. These measures, he said, are intended to help businesses manage operational costs without passing them on to consumers. Fadillah stressed that the role of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) as a publicly listed company includes maintaining investor confidence while reinvesting profits into critical upgrades, especially in accommodating the growing share of renewable energy. 'Much of this profit will go back into upgrading the grid system to ensure reliable and affordable electricity. If the grid isn't improved, it won't be able to receive renewable energy, affecting energy security,' he said. He also assured that the government will continue the RM40 Electricity Bill Rebate Programme for hardcore poor households registered under the e-Kasih system, with RM55mil allocated for this year. In addition, the government is offering rebates for the purchase of energy-efficient appliances such as four- or five-star-rated air conditioners and refrigerators. 'When people choose energy-saving devices, they'll be rewarded with rebates at the point of purchase,' he said. Fadillah also encouraged eligible consumers to sign up for the 'time of use' electricity pricing scheme, where rates are cheaper during off-peak hours. However, this requires a smart meter to be installed and activated by TNB. To support this, the government is fast-tracking the rollout of smart meters nationwide. 'Whether in urban or rural areas, those who use energy wisely—particularly households that stay within 600 kWh—can benefit from various incentives,' he said. Separately, the Cabinet has approved the implementation of an Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) mechanism to replace the existing Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT). Unlike the ICPT, which adjusted fuel costs every six months, the AFA will adjust monthly. However, increases above 10% from the previous month will require ministerial approval.

YaPEIM Allocates RM4 Million To Build 50 Homes For Underpriviliged - Mohd Nai'im

KEPALA BATAS, July 23 (Bernama) -- The Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (YaPEIM) has set a target to construct 50 homes this year for the underprivileged, with an allocation of RM4 million under its Sinar Lestari YaPEIM initiative. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said each housing unit, costing approximately RM80,000, will be built in collaboration with strategic partners for the B40 group and recipients listed under the e-Kasih database, to provide them with safer and more comfortable homes. 'The Sinar Lestari YaPEIM, launched in 2020, has so far allocated RM13.5 million for 293 new construction and renovation projects nationwide as of June this year,' he added. 'A total of 167 renovation projects and 126 new construction projects have been implemented, with 225 projects completed while 68 are still in progress. Specifically, in Penang, YaPEIM has undertaken nine projects, comprising five new builds and four renovations, amounting to RM460,000,' he said. He said this after officiating the Sinar Lestari YaPEIM programme in Penaga, where three families received assistance to build new homes during the event. Mohd Na'im said the assistance provided under the initiative was not merely about building comfortable homes but also symbolised the MADANI Government's commitment to fostering a caring society and ensuring that no underprivileged group is left behind. Meanwhile, a recipient of the new house, Tahir Suhid, 55, expressed his family's gratitude and joy for receiving the housing aid. He shared that for more than 15 years, they had been renting a home on Jalan Pasir Gebu here, as they could not afford to own one. Tahir, who was previously a fisherman, has not gone to sea for over two years and now helps his wife, Norlia Aziz, 45, who runs a small business. He said he first purchased a plot of land through an installment plan before applying for YaPEIM's assistance to build a house on his own land. 'Our family is truly grateful to YaPEIM for this support. This house means a great deal to me, my wife, and our five children, aged between six and 25. Three of them are still in school,' he said.

13th Plan to focus on digital tools, e-invoice

Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Ewon emphasised that future policies under 13MP would also support inclusive business (IB) and social enterprise (SE) models to ensure that development benefits are more evenly distributed. PENAMPANG: The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will focus on helping micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) transition into the digital economy, including adopting the e-Invoice system. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said digital tools are no longer optional but essential for business resilience. 'We want to see MSMEs adapting to digital tools, including e-Invoice, as part of their business operations under the 13th Malaysia Plan,' he said. He made the remarks during the launch of the Madani Entrepreneurs Seminar: e-Invoice organised by the National Entrepreneurship Institute (Insken) at Penampang Cultural Hall, here, on Tuesday. The seminar is part of a 23-stop nationwide tour targeting 20,000 entrepreneurs, aimed at promoting awareness and adoption of the e-Invoice platform. 'So far, over 11,000 entrepreneurs have taken part in the sessions, showing strong interest and readiness. 'Entrepreneurs want to understand what e-Invois is and how it can be integrated into their daily business and we are responding to that need,' he said. He said Insken and SME Corp are working with the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) to expand outreach and ensure businesses are ready before implementation. Ewon emphasised that future policies under 13MP would also support inclusive business (IB) and social enterprise (SE) models to ensure that development benefits are more evenly distributed. 'Inclusive business and social enterprise models will be given more focus as we strengthen the entrepreneurial landscape under 13MP,' he said. He also assured that Sabah and Sarawak would not be left behind in federal initiatives, citing programmes like Tamu Desa, targeted financing schemes for rural traders and special grants for Bumiputera entrepreneurs in Borneo. 'We want entrepreneurs and cooperatives in Sabah to feel included in national policies, that's why we design initiatives specific to Borneo's needs. 'One-size-fits-all approaches don't work. Local business challenges require local strategies,' he stressed. Speaking to the media after the seminar, Ewon welcomed the appointment of Insken's new CEO from Sabah, calling it a reflection of confidence in East Malaysians to lead national agencies. 'I want to see our Sabahan CEO prove that East Malaysians can also lead federal agencies with excellence. 'It's not where you're from, it's your commitment, vision and capacity to serve the country,' he said. Also present were Insken Board of Trustees Chairman Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, Insken Chief Executive Officer Viviantie Sarjuni, board members and agency heads under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
