Bhubaneswar: Odias living in the US paid tribute to veteran actor
Uttam Mohanty
at the annual convention Odisha Society of the Americas (OSA) organised at Frisco, Texas. Mohanty, who has acted in more than 135 films, died on Feb 27, 2025.
The tribute included a special hour-long programme featuring dance performances on his famous songs, celebrating his immense contribution to Odia cinema. "Uttam Mohanty is a superstar with a vast repertoire of work. Paying tribute to him came naturally to us," OSA secretary Santwana Dash said.
The OSA members practised for nearly a month before putting up the show, which ended in a symbolic gesture to pass the torch to the next generation with all members conveying their best wishes to the late actor's son, Babushaan Mohanty, through a dance performance.
"Uttam Mohanty's legacy will continue with his son," Santwana added.
This year's convention witnessed the participation of over 1,500 Odias, who celebrated their roots over three days. There were Odissi, Champu and Chhanda drama presentations, a tribal fashion show and gorging on Odia delicacies. It highlighted the cultural identity and commitment to preserving and promoting Odisha's rich artistic heritage among the community abroad.

Where math meets Gond art

For Akhil, son of chess legend Viswanathan Anand, the world isn't black and white, it's bursting with colour While his father, Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand , may see his chessboard as 64 squares, for his son, Sai Akhil Anand, the board holds infinite patterns. 'On a chessboard, I don't just see pieces. The knight moves like it's in a maze, the bishop traces an aperiodic diagonal. It's all patterns,' says the 14-year-old. Akhil says he finds math patterns everywhere, like the Fibonacci sequence or golden spirals, 'even in a plate of gulab jamuns or murukkus'. Initially, Akhil's interest in art seemed like a form of expression with amusing sketches of animals or the apple falling on Issac Newton's head, says Viswanath Anand. 'But over time, he started taking it up seriously and seemed to enjoy himself a lot. More importantly, he found happiness in it. He would work on something until he got it right, and that reminded me of my own past with chess tournaments.' During the pandemic, says Akhil's mother Aruna, they noticed he loved sketching, especially animals. 'On realising that patterns in nature are always perfect, he started to use them to create ideas based on mythology,' she says. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dementia Has Been Linked To a Common Habit. Akhil has produced a good body of work, many of which are in the gond style with a contemporary touch, says V Umashankar, an artist at Cholamandal Artists' Village. 'His treatment of the subject and handling of the medium is quite impressive.' Akhil's debut solo art exhibition titled 'Morphogenesis' will be held at Art Space by KalpaDruma from Aug 1. Tanushree Dutta , the OG MeToo whistleblower, has opened up about the emotional video she recently shared on her social media. In the now-viral clip that she shared on Tuesday, the actress can be seen sobbing and talking about being allegedly "harassed" inside her home. "I am being harassed in my own house. I just called the cops, and they have asked me to come to the police station to lodge a proper complaint. I will probably go tomorrow or the day after. I am not well. I have been harassed so much in the past five years that I have fallen sick," she said in the video. Tanushree has alleged that the video was a result of years of "pain, stress, and fear she faced over the last five years". Speaking to ANI, Tanushree said her video was not a stunt or drama, but a real "emotional response after enduring repeated traumatic events since MeToo allegations in 2018". "First of all, I want to say that it was my emotional response," she said. "A lot of strange things have happened to me in the last five years. After MeToo, serious and dangerous things started happening around me. It took me time to understand that all of this was actually happening to me," she said. "I was in an accident; my brakes failed. There were also attempts to mix something in my food to make me sick. Strange things started happening outside my house too," Tanushree added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3 & 4 BHK Starts ₹1.65 Cr in Kukatpally Honer Signatis Book Now Undo When asked if anyone from the film industry reached out to help, she said, "I don't have any friends. After opening that page, players need to hit the 'Add to Cart' option, and at last continue with the 'Confirm Purchase' option. As long as an active PS Plus account is connected to the store, the price of this bundle will be shown as $0.00. So, it will be an absolutely free bundle for the PS Plus users. After completing the purchase, the bundle will automatically reflect in the associated Marvel Rivals account in the game.
