3-language policy row: Devendra Fadnavis labels Uddhav Thackeray 'palturam'; says 'not against any language'

Time of India6 hours ago

NEW DELHI: A day after rolling back the decision to implement the three-language policy in Maharashtra amid opposition's "morcha" threat, chief minister
Devendra Fadnavis
on Monday snubbed
Uddhav Thackeray
, calling him "palturam".
While addressing the media, Fadnavis said that the BJP-led government was not against Hindi or any other language of the nation.
"We are not against the Hindi language. We are not against any language of the nation. When they (Uddhav Thackeray) were in power, they had made teaching of Hindi mandatory, which the Raghunath Mashelkar Committee recommended," Fadnavis said.
"Palturam is the correct name for him (Uddhav Thackeray)," he added.
On Sunday, the Maharashtra government withdrew two orders on the implementation of the three-language policy in Classes 1 to 5 in state schools.
The government also announced the formation of a committee under educationist Dr Narendra Jadhav to suggest the way forward and implementation of the language policy.
The panel has been given three months to study the issue and prepare a report.
The Fadnavis government had issued a GR on April 16, making Hindi a compulsory third language for students in classes 1 to 5 studying in English and Marathi medium schools.

Amid backlash, the government issued an amended GR on June 17, making Hindi an optional language.
Meanwhile, Uddhav claimed that the attempt made by the Mahayuti government to "impose Hindi" on "Marathi Manoos" has been defeated.
W
hile addressing a press conference, Uddhav said that the Fadnavis government attempted to break the unity of the Marathi manoos and create a divide between Marathis and non-Marathis.
"The decision to impose Hindi under the guise of a three-language policy from Class 1 has finally been withdrawn. The government has cancelled the two GRs (Government Resolutions) related to this. This cannot be called wisdom that came late, because this imposition was withdrawn solely due to the strong resistance from the Marathi people. Why the government was so insistent on pushing Hindi and from where exactly this pressure was coming still remains a mystery," Uddhav said.

French President Emmanuel Macron calls tariffs imposed by powerful countries a form of 'blackmail'

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that tariffs levied by powerful countries were often a form of " blackmail " rather than instruments to rebalance trade. His comments during a speech at the International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, Spain, came with the European Union negotiating a trade deal with the United States ahead of a July 9 deadline, though he did not specifically refer to the United States or U.S. President Donald Trump. "We need to restore freedom and equity to international trade , much more than barriers and tariffs, which are devised by the strongest, and which are often used as instruments of blackmail, not at all as instruments of rebalancing," Macron said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ukraine: Bathroom Remodeling Trends in 2025 May Surprise You Bathroom Remodeling | Search Ads Search Now Undo He also urged support - and a rethinking - of the World Trade Organization to bring it in line with goals to fight inequality and climate change . "Bringing back a trade war and tariffs at this moment in the life of the planet is an aberration, especially when I see the tariffs that are being imposed on countries that are just beginning their economic takeoff," Macron said. Live Events Trump unveiled sweeping global tariffs in April in which he said countries would face taxes on imports into the United States ranging from 10-50%, though he later reversed course and mostly lowered them for 90 days. The United Nations trade agency had said the tariffs could have a catastrophic impact on developing countries, with some of the world's least developed, such as Lesotho, Cambodia, Laos, Madagascar and Myanmar, facing some of the highest levies. Macron, a vocal critic of Washington's tariff campaign, has also said it is an aberration to ask Europeans to spend more on defence while launching a trade war.
