Mark Rober's Spark of Innovation Lights Up Indian Youth with ₹50 Lakh Jugaad Challenge
Rober's visit has quickly evolved into a cultural and scientific phenomenon. He's toured cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, connecting with students, creators, and DIY innovators. At each stop, his message is simple but powerful: Science is for everyone—especially when it's fun. It's this very mindset that fuels the contest he's launched specifically for India: a mission to uncover the country's most original, mind-bending inventions using nothing but everyday items.
The #MarkRoberJugaad contest, open from April 30 to September 15, 2025, is inviting Indian residents aged 8 and above to post a video of their unique homemade solution on Facebook, Instagram, X, or YouTube. Whether it's a bottle cap fan or a makeshift washing machine powered by a cycle, creativity is the only currency here. Contestants must ensure their social media profiles are public, and most importantly, submit their video link at www.markroberjugaad.com—as posting alone doesn't qualify as an entry.
But this trip isn't just about competitions. Rober is truly immersing himself in Indian creator culture. In Mumbai, he visited the studios of CarryMinati, India's roasting king, for a wild video where science meets sarcasm. In Delhi, he filmed with Tech Burner, breaking down the secret tech behind India's best jugaads. In Pune, he joined forces with Mr. Indian Hacker for one of the most explosive, large-scale experiments the internet has ever seen—think water rockets, explosive rice cookers, and gravity-defying machines made from scrap.
Meanwhile, a flavorful adventure unfolded with Curly Tales, where Rober explored Indian street food science, turning pani puri into a molecular gastronomy experiment. And with Slay Point, viewers can expect a hilarious deep dive into everyday Indian life, peppered with unexpected scientific solutions to common problems.
Perhaps the most unexpected collaboration is his special episode with Indian cricket star Hardik Pandya. Together, they analyzed the physics of swing bowling, tested bat angles, and even built a device to measure reaction time. 'This isn't just about cricket,' Rober said. 'It's about showing how science powers everything we love.'
Rober's presence also shook up India's educational landscape when he made a surprise appearance at the Summit of Future at Jain University in Kochi. As a key guest at the RoboVerse exhibit, Rober explored India's rising potential in robotics, coding, and STEM education. Students at the summit got a chance to interact with robot dogs, AI-led tech labs, and Mark himself. 'This is the most energized I've ever felt in a student environment,' he remarked during his keynote.
Behind all the cameras and collaborations, Rober's goal is deeply personal. Through his company CrunchLabs, he has long promoted STEM learning through play and creativity. With India's rich culture of improvisation and resourcefulness, he saw a natural partnership. 'Jugaad is engineering in its purest form,' he shared. 'You don't need a lab or funding—just imagination and a little bit of duct tape.'
The contest will crown ten winners, each receiving ₹5 lakh and the chance to feature in a global video alongside Mark Rober. The judging panel will consider creativity, functionality, and the cleverness of how household materials are repurposed.
With videos pouring in daily, and Indian youth now dreaming in cardboard, motors, and string, this visit is achieving more than just viral views. It's creating a shift in how science and creativity are seen—not as subjects or careers, but as tools for daily life. Rober's India chapter is still unfolding, but one thing is certain: he came for innovation, and he found a nation overflowing with it.

How to Style Summer's Capri Pants Trend That Hailey Bieber and Emily Ratajkowski Just Co-Signed
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Last week, Emily Ratajkowski and Hailey Bieber both stepped out wearing capri pants, co-signing the return of the polarizing pant trend. Hailey Bieber's capris, spotted in her Instagram post from July 16, were part of a matching set alongside a body-hugging jacket, which she wore with strappy sandals. EmRata, on the other hand, styled her pedal pusher pants in two different ways on the same day: with a graphic, long-sleeved shirt for a more casual look and with a scoop-neck, fitted blazer for a polished take on the trend. More from WWD Jennifer Lawrence's Chic Liffner Tote Makes the Case for Suede Bags in the Summer Rosé Races Into Summer With Puma's Latest Speedcat Sneaker in a Fresh Colorway From A'ja Wilson to Caitlin Clark, High Heels Were Trending During WNBA All-Star Game Arrivals This twinning style moment was no coincidence, though. Capri pants are emerging as one of summer 2025's biggest trends, and the fact that they earned both Hailey Bieber and Emily Ratajkowski's seal of approval in the same week is all the proof we need. Before taking over every style influencer's Euro summer vacation Instagram posts this summer, the return of capri pants could first be spotted on the spring runways. Sandy Liang's spring 2025 show highlighted puff-sleeve jacket and capri pant ensembles redefining modern workwear; Louis Vuitton dolled up the silhouette with stripes and slouch; Carolina Herrera played with proportions by juxtaposing puffy tulle tops with cigarette-slim pedal pushers; and Tommy Hilfiger, emblematic of all things 'preppy Americana,' made its spring 2025 collection's capri pants checkered and bright. Beyond the runways, capri pants have been a current favorite of fashion insiders who are emulating the city-chic aesthetic of 2000s sartorial icons like Carrie Bradshaw, generating thousands of TikTok and Instagram likes for their capri pants styling equations in the process. The beloved fictional character, after all, was a fan of the pedal pushers trend that boomed during the early aughts: donning them in many 'Sex and the City' scenes with striped blazers, vibrant headscarves, and other masterful matches. The synchronized return of capri pants — recently spotted on both Emily Ratajkowski and Hailey Bieber — follows a wave of A-listers embracing the calf-skimming silhouette. Bella Hadid was early to the revival, debuting a sleek Ferragamo pair in 2024 styled with a matching bomber jacket and leather mules from the brand. Since then, Hadid, like Bieber, has consistently offered fresh takes on the trend. She's joined by a growing list of style-setters including Dua Lipa, Anne Hathaway (who swapped her 2025 Met Gala gown for a capri-powered after-party look), Kendall Jenner, and the original Carrie Bradshaw herself, Sarah Jessica Parker. Together, they're making a strong case for the capri pant, especially for warm-weather city strolls and Euro Summer escapes — when full-length pants feel like too much, but structure is still a must. The original capri pants can be traced back to German fashion designer Sonja de Lennart during World War II. Rebelling against the notion that trousers were strictly for men, de Lennart designed a pair tailored to her petite frame, featuring chic slits and a hem that hit just below the knee. She named them 'Capris' as an ode to the Italian island where her family vacationed. After debuting in 1948, the pants — also referred to as pedal pushers, a nod to the cycling-friendly length that avoided getting caught in bike wheels — quickly gained traction and made their way to the U.S., where they were embraced by Hollywood's inner circle. Their iconic status was solidified with a breakout appearance in Roman Holiday. Once Audrey Hepburn was seen in a pair of the prototypical capri pants, everyone wanted to own them, and de Lennart's hero product was later donned by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor: appreciated for its originally rebellious intentions and modern-woman appeal. Today, capri pants take the form of leggings, too, and come in many different materials: from denim and cotton to the canvas that makes up some cargo variations. The silhouette remains polarizing, largely because it can shorten the legs if the hemline doesn't hit at the right length. To avoid that effect, opt for a pair that hits as close to your knee as possible and fits without cutting off your proportions. Also, opt for shoes that show the front of your feet for an added lengthening effect (kitten heel sandals are stellar). Because of their tight-fitting nature in most cases, it's best to style capri pants with something looser and more fluid, like a cape-sleeve top. Worried about your curves being lost in all that fabric? Go the opposite route and stick to body-skimming camisoles. For corp-core style, consider investing in high-waisted capri pants and tucking a starched button-up into them; so as to avoid excessive matchiness, stick with neutral coordinates if you're wearing patterned capri pants or spice up a white pair with an on-trend, polka-dotted halter top. Capri pants in the leggings category can easily work with a bra-bikini hybrid under a blazer, and jean ones practically beg to be complimented by Y2K-coded bags, hairbands, and other accessories that will take you back to a simpler time. Still don't see the vision? We'll make it easier for you by providing some capri pants outfit ideas ahead. Given their current trending status, there's no shortage of capris on the market to choose from right now, but below are the styles our editors believe have the highest payoff in terms of styling the trend this season. YouTube (GOOGL) Has Taken Over TV, and UK Regulators Are Not Happy About It
Tech giant Alphabet's (GOOGL) YouTube has become one of the most powerful entertainment platforms, especially on TV screens. It started out as a website for short, low-budget videos, such as how-to guides or skateboarding clips. However, it's now the most-watched video platform on televisions in the U.S., according to The Wall Street Journal. As a result, many YouTube creators are producing longer, higher-quality videos for families and groups to watch together. YouTube is also improving its TV app to encourage people to watch longer by adding features like auto-playing the next episode and personalized suggestions. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. Make smarter investment decisions with TipRanks' Smart Investor Picks, delivered to your inbox every week. These longer videos are more valuable because they can include more ads, which equates to more revenue for both creators and Alphabet. YouTube is also investing in live sports, such as NFL games, and adding tools like 'multi-view' so fans can watch several games at once. As a result, YouTube has become a full replacement for traditional TV for many people. But not everyone is happy about this shift. In fact, UK media regulator Ofcom is worried that public service broadcasters (PSBs), like the BBC and Channel 4, could disappear as more people watch YouTube and Netflix (NFLX), according to the Financial Times. Therefore, Ofcom says that these public channels need more online visibility, and it wants the government to consider laws that would require YouTube to promote PSB content, especially for kids and news. While smart TVs already make sure that PSBs appear on home screens, their online reach is shrinking and accounts for only 9% of views. With most viewers no longer watching regular broadcast TV, Ofcom believes stronger rules and more cooperation are needed to protect UK-made public content. Is Google Stock a Good Buy? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on GOOGL stock based on 29 Buys and nine Holds assigned in the past three months. Furthermore, the average GOOGL price target of $206.18 per share implies 9% upside potential from current levels.
