Founder Of Biotech Firm Caris Life Sciences Becomes A Billionaire After IPO

Forbes18-06-2025
Caris Life Sciences founder David Dean Halbert
The successful IPO of Caris Life Sciences makes its founder David Dean Halbert worth an estimated $3.3 billion.
David Dean Halbert acquired an early-stage life sciences company called Molecular Profiling Institute in 2008 to develop a blood-based platform for early disease detection. Today, that firm, greatly expanded and renamed Caris Life Sciences, went public on Nasdaq, raising about $494 million. At 3:45 pm ET, the company had a market valuation of $7.4 billion, making Halbert worth at least $3.3 billion by Forbes calculations. He owns nearly 44% of the company.
Caris Life Sciences, a cancer diagnostics company based in Irving, Texas, uses gene sequencing, AI and machine learning to detect and monitor disease. The company had revenue of $412 million last year and posted a net loss of $282 million.
Halbert, who is 66 and has a bachelor's degree in business administration from Abilene Christian University, has a long history in healthcare investing and startups. Back in 1987, he founded a pharmacy benefit manager called AdvancePCS that he sold to CareMark for $7.5 billion in 2004. He subsequently started an investment firm, called Caris Capital, where he bought and sold $1.2 billion worth of assets.
But even based on that background, Caris Life Sciences was a big deal. In May 2021, it raised $830 million in growth capital led by Sixth Street – one of the largest capital raises in precision medicine – at a valuation of $7.8 billion.
While today's IPO represents a slightly lower valuation for the company, it is also one of the largest life sciences companies to go public in a tough market this year. Shares of Caris were priced at $21 before the offering, opened at $27 and were trading at $26.50 a share as of 3:45 pm ET.
Halbert was not immediately available for comment.

Demonstrated interest bolsters acceptance rate

As of March 2025, more than 8.5 million college applications had been filed with the Common Application, according to Forbes, for students seeking admission for the fall of 2026, a 6% increase from the prior admission cycle, with students applying to more institutions. The Common App, which is currently accepted by more than a thousand colleges and universities nationwide, makes it easy for students to seek admission to as many as 20 schools using just one application. This presents a dilemma to universities with multi-billion-dollar budgets to meet, as they need to identify and accept those applicants who will likely enroll. That's the reason students are wise to show 'demonstrated interest,' showing that they've taken the time to get to know each school. There are several ways students can accomplish this goal. More: College essays present unique opportunity to shine | College Connection First, students should visit, in person, the colleges to which they're applying. Admission officers assume that if students are seriously considering spending the next four years of their life at the institution, they would want to get a look at the campus in advance. Most applications directly ask if a student has visited the campus and, if so, what month and year. Students should always sign in at the Admissions Office when arriving for a college tour to be sure their visit is documented. Students should also seek to connect with the college representatives who visit their high school or local college fair. Students should introduce themselves, express interest in the college, and ask a relevant question or two. Also, they should take the representative's business card and send a follow-up email expressing interest. These college representatives are often the very same admission officers who will ultimately decide if the student is admitted. More: The ideal college application timeline | College Connection Another amazingly simple, but often overlooked, way to show demonstrated interest is to open the emails received from colleges. A software surveillance company, Technolutions, is utilized by more than 2,000 colleges in the U.S. to provide feedback on whether students open college emails and click through the links, and how much time they spend on the site. In short, tracks demonstrated interest. Students can also show demonstrated interest by personalizing their Common App and supplemental essays, sharing with each college the specific reasons it would be the best-fit institution for their college years. By informing colleges that they've taken the time to learn about the academic, extracurricular, and social offerings on campus, students can greatly increase the likelihood of being invited to attend their institution. The Next Leg Up Has Just Begun: Why I'm Expecting A 20% Gain Over The Next 6 Months

Stocks have been on a tear. The S&P and Nasdaq have both made new all-time highs, yet again, last a difference a couple of months can sank earlier in the year on tariff concerns, before bottoming in early then, the major indexes have all surged by double-digits from their 4/7 lows, with the Dow up by 21.5%, the S&P up by 30.2%, and the Nasdaq up by 41.3%.The market went from panic to fear-of-missing-out. And rightly in spite of the eye-popping gains over the last couple of months, the major indexes are only up single-digits for the year, so the outlook is for much, much for those who missed the recent rally, or wished they would have taken better advantage of it, the good news is the next leg up could be even more that's exactly what I'm expecting.I Told You So I don't want to say I told you I kind of the pullback in March (the S&P was down -5.75%), and then hitting the skids in early April, I was writing articles on what the probability was that we could actually see the market finish higher in one of the things I pointed to was an amazing short, it showed that since 1945, in every instance when the S&P was down by -3% or more in March, it was then higher in happened 7 times at that point. And each and every time it was higher in average gain in April was 5.92%.That would be a heck of a move given the S&P was down as much as -13.8% at its worst in we didn't quite get into the plus column by April's end, it sure came close, ending the month with only a -0.91% loss. For those who bought early, you were essentially back to even. For those who bought near the lows, you likely saw big that March/April stat no longer has a 100% success rate, 7 out of 8 times is still a pretty amazing there's at April thru the end of the year, it was higher in 6 out of those 7 years, with an average gain of 20.3%.A move I'm sure no one would want to a move I'm expecting to see this time around Repeats Itself That 20% gain fits perfectly with this next year saw the S&P 500 soar by 23.3%.That was the second year in a row of 20%+ gains. (2023 was up 24.2%.)That's a feat rarely seen in the fact, it was the first time it was up 20% or more for two years in a row since 1995-1996. (Prior to that, you'd have to go all the way back to 1954-55.)In 1995 the S&P was up 34.1%. That was the beginning on the dot-com (technology) 1996 it was up 20.3%.So, what happened in 1997? It was up another 31.0%.(BTW, 1997 was one of those 7 years I mentioned earlier. In March of '97, the S&P was down -4.26%. But in April it gained 5.84%. And from April to year's end, it gained 28.17%.)1998? Up another 26.7%.And in 1999, it was up 19.5%.A spectacular rally that lasted 5 long, glorious the dot-com bubble arrived in 2000. But not before people got rich over the preceding 5 years with a 220% increase in the S&P, while plenty of individual stocks were up several hundred percent to several thousand I believe we could possibly see the same thing again now. Maybe 5 years or more of boom times – for similar reasons, and some unique to the present Booms: Past And Present (AI Tech Boom Is Alive And Well) The tech boom back then saw everybody go nuts for technology stocks, driven by the internet and dot-com was new and exciting. And the internet was forecast to change the way people shopped, did business, and interacted with each promise was real, as we now what's the parallel? In part, it's another tech this modern technology boom is being driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI).And it's forecast to be just as transformative as the personal computer, the internet and the mobile phone. And it's expected to touch virtually every industry in some way shape or form, as well as impact ordinary AI trade has worked so well for a reason -- because the AI boom is real, and is supported by real earnings, and real growth there are plenty of other catalysts that make the market outlook even more . . .------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Saturday Deadline: Claim your Free Copy of One single idea changed Kevin Matras' life as an investor, allowing him to tap into the greatest force driving stock prices. With only four more FOMC meetings left in the year (July 29-30, September, October and December), that means two of those four should see a the odds favor September's meeting for the rate-cutting cycle to resume, Mr. Powell, just the other week, said they could very well begin in way, the market is a forward-looking mechanism.
