Gabriela Bryan and Connor O'Leary win Corona Cero Open J-Bay
'I'm just so happy with how I performed today.
"[Richard] 'Dog' Marsh has been telling me that it's coming this year, but it's been hard to believe sometimes. All the stars aligned for this one, so I'm stoked. It felt good to have so many people cheering for me, and then to perform for them.
'I intended to do some of the best backhand surfing you've ever seen, and to compete with a fellow goofy in the Final, hopefully it inspires other goofy-foot surfers that they can compete against the best in perfect right-hand point breaks.'
O'Leary took the win over Yago Dora (BRA) in an all-goofy-foot battle at Supertubes.
O'Leary's flawless backhand attack saw him earn the event's only 10-point ride (out of a possible 10) to knock out three-time J-Bay winner Filipe Toledo (BRA) in an exhilarating semifinal to advance to his first final for 2025.
O'Leary had a huge challenge ahead, with Dora seemingly unstoppable in J-Bay and his third final for the season.
Locking into a classic leg burner, O'Leary scored an excellent 8.17 and 7.50 for a total of 15.67 (out of a possible 20) for the win.
World No 2 Bryan earned her third CT win of the season and the fourth of her career in dramatic fashion, defeating world No 1 Molly Picklum (AUS) by the narrowest of margins.
After an early exit at the VIVO Rio Pro, Bryan lost the Yellow Leader Jersey to Picklum and flew out to SA to reset and get in a few extra reps at Supertubes.
'I don't think it's sunk in yet,' said Bryan.
'I came here early, putting in a lot of time here, and it paid off. I'm so stoked. It's been a dream of mine to win here at J-Bay. It's an iconic wave and one of my favourites in the world.
'The Yellow Jersey comes with a lot of pressure, so I definitely had less pressure in that Final. I personally like chasing something that I want to go after. The only time I want to be wearing Yellow is the first event next year.' Bryan clinched her place in the WSL Final 5 and will compete for the World Title in the Lexus WSL Finals Fiji. — World Surf League

Junior Boks break 13-year title drought in Italy
The Junior Springboks became the third South African team to claim world champion status by outplaying New Zealand 23-15 in the World Rugby U20 Championship Final in Rovigo on Saturday night. The SA U20s join the reigning Rugby World Cup champions, the Springboks, and the Blitzboks at the top of the World Rugby competition podium. The Junior Springboks' tournament victory — their first since 2012 — came on a hot and humid night in Italy where they once again proved the masters of their southern hemisphere foes, beating the Kiwis for a seventh consecutive time in this tournament and the second time in a final, the same as in 2012, when the SA U20s outplayed NZ by 22-16. The class of 2025 won the final on the back of good defence, good discipline and scoring the crucial points when it mattered. They were leading 13-5 at the break and never took their foot off the pedal against a New Zealand team that fought until the end, but to no avail. The Junior Boks started in the best way possible with an early maul try by flanker Xola Nyali, converted by the trusted boot of Vusi Moyo and the 7-0 lead was good early value for money. New Zealand focused on a stack attack early on, something that worked well for them in their previous encounter against SA. But this time around, the Junior Boks' defence held out. A good cover tackle kept New Zealand from scoring from such an attack, but they could not keep out the team in black from a resulting line-out when lock Jayden Sa scored. New Zealand outfoxed their foes in the line-out and SA came around the front to score and cut the lead to two points. Vusi Moyo extended the lead to 10-5 soon after with a penalty goal and then New Zealand's prop Sika Pole was sent to the sin bin, with his high tackle upgraded to a 20-minute red card. The Junior Boks pressed hard to make the numerical advantage count, but Moyo missed a drop goal as SA looked to confirm their upper hand in general play. An injury to Nyali resulted in him being replaced by Stephanus Linde, but the pressure remained on New Zealand, who were guilty of forcing play to combat their absent defender. SA U20 centre Albe Bester was yellow carded for a dangerous ruck entry, but Moyo kicked another penalty when the Junior Blacks strayed offside to push the lead to 13-5 at the break. New Zealand started strongly in the second half, taking the ball through numerous phases and earning a penalty for their efforts. Flyhalf Rico Simpson kicked the points to cut SA's lead to 13-8 after 47 minutes. Moyo cancelled that out with another penalty goal that pushed the lead to 16-8. The Junior Boks were starting to dominate and a try by Haashim Pead seemed to seal the deal, but it was disallowed by the TMO. Moyo then missed a penalty attempt as well, but the South Africans were in control as the championship minutes came into play. They were held up over the try line and were dominating play, but with no scoreboard reflection. That changed three minutes from full-time, though, when Pead chipped to the corner, into the waiting arms of fullback Gilermo Mentoe. Springboks down Georgia during thrilling encounter in Mbombela
The visitors were on a crusade to leave their mark, as decreed by their tough-as-teak coach Richard Cockerill. There was much bellicose talk from Cockerill in the build-up to the clash, with the combative former England hooker suggesting physicality is in the Georgian DNA. Indeed the tourists were full of effort and endeavour in the opening half-hour. When flyhalf Luka Matkava slotted a penalty in the 29th minute, the Lelos — ranked 11th in the world — were just five points adrift from the back-to-back Rugby World Cup holders. Eventually, though, the star quality of the hosts shone through as the Lelos struggled to keep up with the lung-busting pace of the game. Centre Canan Moodie and wing Edwill van der Merwe revelled in the space and time afforded them, while in tighter confines lock Ruan Nortje was a Trojan as he splendidly rose to the challenge. In the second half, substitute lock RG Snyman freed his arms as the Boks transitioned seamlessly from defence to attack. Debutant front-rankers Boan Venter, Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouche were tasked with quelling a Georgian scrumming vanguard and they did so effortlessly. No 8 Cobus Wiese stepped into the breach for his banned brother Jasper and there were times he lacked finesse. His job, however, was to bring punch to the Bok carries and dead weight to their first line of defence.

Bok captain Kolisi not concerned about inexperienced front row to take on Georgia
'Over and above that, a scrum is not only about the front row, it involves everyone in the pack doing their bit and everyone in the team knows what they have to do.' Apart from Venter, Fouche and Van der Merwe, focus will also be on Kolisi as he will be back in action for the first time this season and can't wait to run out in front of an expected packed house. 'It's always fantastic to play here,' said Kolisi who has special memories of Mbombela Stadium which is where he made his Test debut in June 2013 against Scotland. 'The vibe at the stadium is amazing and we know that it will be similar to last week in Gqeberha, where the crowd really got involved and inspired us. We are very grateful to the people coming to the stadium. They definitely lift us, so we are grateful for their support.' Having spent the past few weeks on the sidelines due to injury, Kolisi said it has been frustrating.
