Prayagraj: Giving a huge sigh of relief to thousands of students, authorities of the UP Board have now made the Permanent Education Number (PEN) optional for students during registration in classes 9 and 11. Earlier, the Board made PEN mandatory for online advance registration in classes 9 and 11 for the first time this year. The purpose of this system was to ensure the identity of the students and track their academic records, while the demand for the SR (Scholar Register) was made to stop fake registrations. However, thousands of students and school operators were troubled by this new system because about 50% of the students did not have a PEN. Although students of govt schools did have a permanent education number, most students of private schools did not had it. Due to this, there was a possibility of registration being disrupted. UP Board Additional Secretary (administration) Satyendra Singh said that keeping in mind the interests of the students, PEN has now been made optional in the registration process.
