Bengaluru excise inspector's fake expense theory ends in jail

New Indian Express16 hours ago
BENGALURU: A theory to show expenses for children's delivery and income from 'fortune telling', turned into misfortune for an Excise inspector after the Special Court for Lokayukta cases rejected it and sentenced him to undergo three years' rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 30 lakh.
The accused, K Krishnamurthy, the then Excise Inspector, Bengaluru South Range, was found guilty of possessing disproportionate assets of Rs 29.98 lakh, which is 70.46%. His actual income was Rs 42.55 lakh, and expenditure was Rs 72.54 lakh during the check period from 1990 to 2013. He was sentenced for the offences punishable under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was booked in August 2013 by the Lokayukta police.
'The conduct of the accused, being a public servant in illegally accumulating assets disproportionate to his known source of income, truly demands stringent punishment. So, it could be a message to public servants involved in corrupt activities,' said Judge KM Radhakrishna.
Among other reasons for sentencing the accused, the court noted that the accused and his family are Hindus. In more than 90% of Hindu families, a pregnant woman goes to her parents' house well in advance for delivery. The parents take care of all the expenses pertaining to the mother and child. Therefore, only 15 per cent, that is, Rs 1.45 lakh reduction of Rs 9.69 lakh domestic expenses, could ensure the reasonableness to meet the ends of justice. Therefore, Rs 8.24 lakh is considered to be the domestic expenditure of the accused, the court said.
The accused, from the Kani community, has shown Rs 5 lakh income from 'Kani' (fortune telling) and Rs 3 lakh from 'Naati Maddu'. He produced nothing except for taking the defence of old palm leaves found in his house during the raid.
He himself admitted the faith, belief, tradition and customs of the community, forbids imparting these secret knowledge for a fee, likewise, fee cannot be charged from the seeker as 'Dakshine' along with betel leaves can be accepted, should not be shared, commented or expressed displeasure for it is equivalent to 'Gratus'- Kanike'. Therefore, the accused's story is really surprising, the court said while rejecting the projection of income of Rs 8 lakh by him to escape from the punishment, saying it is unimaginable.

Buch says Jane St probe started during her stint, denies regulatory failure

Attempts are being made to create a 'false narrative of regulatory failure,' Buch, whose term ended in March this year, said. In a written statement after the publishing of a media report, Buch pointed to chronology in Sebi's interim order against Jane Street, which has been accused of gaining at least Rs 4,800 crore through market manipulation in support of her claim. Mumbai, Jul 8 (PTI) Former Sebi chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch on Tuesday said the capital markets regulator was seized of the Jane Street matter since April 2024, and termed attempts to imply regulatory failure as 'unfortunate'. 'It is extremely unfortunate that certain sections of the media are choosing to ignore facts in plain sight and seeking to create a false narrative by implying that there was regulatory failure by Sebi,' the statement by Buch said. Buch said the chronology shows that Sebi commenced examination of the matter as early as April 2024. The regulator took 'numerous steps', including identification of the index manipulation, issuance of circulars and caution letter to Jane street to cease and desist from undertaking certain trading patterns between April 2024 and February 2025, she said. There were policy interventions initiated by Sebi as well in October 2024, and finally, in February 2025, Sebi instructed the NSE to issue a 'cease and desist' letter to Jane Street. As per the order issued last Friday, Jane Street restarted trading activities intended to gain through market manipulations in May this year, ultimately leading to the order. According to market watchers, Sebi usually takes over a year to complete investigations. During Buch's term as the chairperson, Sebi had been disclosing pendency of investigations and other requests, seeking to minimise the timelines. In an order released in the early hours of Friday, the market regulator has found Jane Street, a New York-based hedge fund, guilty of manipulating the indices by taking bets in the cash, and, futures and options markets simultaneously for making handsome gains. It has suspended the hedge fund from accessing the market and impounded over Rs 4,843 crore in gains. The probe has found that JS made a profit of Rs 36,671 crore on a net basis during the probe period from January 2023-May 2025. PTI AA TRB This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. 'Chain' Reaction: Bengaluru Cops In Quandary As Repeated Arrests Fail To Deter Notorious Snatcher

Gani, who has committed more than 160 chain-snatching crimes over the last decade, was recently arrested again Gani Bhai in the Salman Khan-starrer film Wanted gave sleepless nights to the police. Now, in real life, chain snatcher Gani, alias Achyut Kumar, has left Bengaluru cops scratching their heads. He has been arrested multiple times and was shot in the leg once by the police in 2018. But none of this has stopped Gani from snatching gold chains. He has committed more than 160 chain-snatching crimes over the last decade. Girinagar police on June 23 apprehended the chain snatcher and seized 541 grams of gold chains related to 11 different cases. He had sold or pledged these gold ornaments in far-off Hyderabad and Palakkad. He had been targeting areas under ten different police station limits, including Yelahanka, Girinagar, Kodigehalli, Sanjaynagar, and Kengeri. 'Gani' in 60 seconds! Gani is known for committing multiple snatchings within a short span, once striking three times in just three hours, even in broad daylight in the Sanjaynagar and Kodigehalli areas. The accused has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Hailing from Koliwad near Hubballi, Gani is exceptionally adept at robbing women wearing gold jewellery. He often wears a full-face helmet and rides stolen motorcycles. He snatches the gold chains in a flash and escapes. To evade the cops, he often changes houses. — Harish Upadhya (@harishupadhya) July 8, 2025 On June 17, 2018, police in Jnanabharathi caught him after shooting him in the leg. The arrest helped the police recover Rs 1 crore worth of stolen gold chains. Gani spent the next four years in the Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara as an undertrial before being released on bail. He was again arrested in October 2022. The police are now considering slapping harsher charges against him, possibly even the Goonda Act. 'This particular accused is involved in more than 160 odd cases of chain snatching in the previous years and other cases also. So it's a serious issue why he's committing crimes like this, and we've discussed this with our crime team also, and our senior officers have been told that he should not repeat this offence. Taking into consideration all these things, we have stricter sections we can book against him," said Seemanth Kumar Singh, Bengaluru city police commissioner.
