Kerala: Six districts on alert after man tests positive for Nipah virus after his death in Palakkad
The man from Kumaramputhur near Mannarkkad in Palakkad tested positive for the virus after he died at a private hospital in Malappuram district's Perinthalmanna, The Hindu reported. He was being treated at the hospital for a fever.
The virus was detected through tests conducted at the Manjeri Medical College in Malappuram, The New Indian Express reported. The samples have been sent to the Pune's National Institute of Virology in keeping with the standard protocol for confirmation.
This was the second Nipah-related death in Kerala in recent weeks. An 18-year-old woman from Malappuram died from the infection on July 1, while another patient from Palakkad was hospitalised.
On Sunday, state Health Minister Veena George said that an alert had been issued to hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Thrissur districts, ANI reported.
George said that a contact list had been prepared of the 46 persons who had interacted with the man over the past three weeks, along with a route map, The Hindu reported. She added that both were awaiting release pending confirmation from the National Institute of Virology.
The minister said that fieldwork, including fever surveillance and door-to-door visits by health workers to provide guidance on precautions against the virus, were being conducted in Kumaramputhur.
'We will bolster our fight against Nipah by strengthening the health teams involved in it and intensifying preventive measures as soon as we get the final confirmation from NIV, Pune,' The Hindu quoted George as saying.
With the 46 contacts of the latest case, 543 persons across the state were currently under observation for the virus, the newspaper reported. At least 208 of them are in Malappuram, 219 are in Palakkad, 114 in Kozhikode and two in Ernakulam.
The Nipah virus is a ' zoonotic illness ' transferred from animals such as pigs and fruit bats to humans. The virus can also be caught through human-to-human transmission.
It causes fever and cold-like symptoms in patients. The infection can also cause encephalitis, which is the inflammation of the brain, and myocarditis, or the inflammation of the heart, in some cases.

PALAKKAD: A total of 675 individuals have been identified on the Nipah virus contact list across various districts in Kerala, says Health Minister Veena George. Of these, 178 people are contacts of the second Nipah-positive patient from Palakkad, who died on Saturday night. District-wise, Malappuram has 210 contacts, Palakkad 347, Kozhikode 115, Ernakulam two and Thrissur one. Currently, one person in Malappuram is undergoing treatment in the ICU, while 82 samples from the district have tested negative so far. In Palakkad, 12 people remain in isolation, while five have been discharged after observation. Across the state, 38 individuals have been categorised under the 'highest risk' group and 139 under 'high risk', all under close surveillance. On Tuesday, a high-level review meeting chaired by Minister Veena George was held to assess the situation. Senior officials, including the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, State Mission Director of the National Health Mission, Directors of Health and Medical Education, district collectors, district medical officers, police officials and representatives from various departments attended the meeting. The health department has intensified monitoring and response mechanisms across affected districts to prevent any potential spread of the virus.

Health Minister Veena George said on Tuesday that 675 people across the State were currently under observation for Nipah, with 178 of them being contacts of the latest Nipah victim from Kumaramputhur. While 210 of those under observation are in Malappuram district, 347 are in Palakkad, 115 in Kozhikode, two in Ernakulam and one in Thrissur. In Malappuram district, 82 samples tested negative for Nipah so far. As many as 38 people under observation are in the highest-risk category and 139 in high-risk category, said Ms. George. In Palakkad district, two confirmed Nipah cases have been reported so far. A 58-year-old man from Kumaramputhur died of Nipah when a 38-year-old woman from Thachanattukara is fighting for her life at Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. As many as 63 people under observation were given psychological support through telephonic counselling in the district. Health officials said that the district control cell were getting over two dozen calls every day in connection with Nipah control. A team of experts from National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, collected samples from 160 bats and sent them for examination. The team also visited Kallamala at Agali in Attappady, on Tuesday.

Nipah case in Palakkad: State health dept steps up surveillance on TN-Kerala border
Photo by P Sreedharan COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu health department has stepped up surveillance along the inter-state border in Coimbatore district by setting up temporary medical camps at checkposts adjoining Kerala, following a confirmed case of Nipah virus infection in Palakkad district. Health workers are screening individuals entering Coimbatore district from Palakkad through six main checkposts for symptoms of the Nipah virus, which are similar to those of influenza. 'The six checkposts where commuters are being screened are located at Gopalapuram in Pollachi North block, Veerappagoundanur in Kinathukadavu block, Walayar in Madukkarai block, Anaikatti in Periyanaickenpalayam block, Pattisalai in Karamadai block and Meenachipuram in Anamalai block,' said district health officer P Balusamy. 'Health workers stationed at these checkposts are using personal protective equipment (PPE) while screening incoming commuters in all vehicles. They are using infrared thermometers to check passengers' temperatures and look for symptoms of the zoonotic disease, including fever, muscle pain and respiratory issues,' he added. Six teams have been deployed, each comprising one health inspector, one village health nurse and one female health volunteer, amounting to 18 staff members in total. 'At checkposts with high vehicle traffic, we are planning to deploy additional manpower based on the requirement,' he said. 'So far, we did not detect any suspected cases. If we do suspect any passenger, they will be taken to the nearest primary health centre, where throat and blood samples will be collected. Surveillance will continue until further orders from the state govt,' said Balusamy. Another health department official said the zoonotic disease was spread by large fruit bats. 'Humans can contract the virus if they consume contaminated fruit. People should wash their hands regularly and avoid eating fruits and vegetables without thoroughly washing them,' he said.
