AFL 2025: Richmond coach Adem Yze on latest debutant Taj Hotton
The Tigers selected Hotton with one of their six first round picks last year despite him missing a chunk of the year through an ACL setback.
Hotton showed why he was once touted to go as high as pick No.1 prior to injury through strong performances in the VFL on return.
With the absence of spearhead Tom Lynch through suspension, Hotton could spend time deep inside the Tigers' 50.
But as Yze sees it, Hotton has the capacity to play deep, high and even pinch hit in the middle of the ground.
'He's just a pure forward, so we can play him at either line. He can go deep, he can play a high-forward role,' he said.
'Then he has pinch hit in the midfield in the VFL the last couple of weeks, so we might see him around the ball late in the game as well.
'We'd like to give him that exposure – whether it's this week or coming weeks.'
The 183cm Hotton can play taller than his height suggests, as he launches at the footy with consummate ease.
Yze says Hotton's areal power, craft at ground level and work ethic is why Richmond coaches, players and supporters are itching to see the young talent under MCG lights against Essendon.
'He's a special talent, when you've got the ability to jump and mark like he does and then at ground level do things, it's really hard to coach,' he said.
'It's the reason he went so high in the draft and the reason we rated him so highly going into the draft.
'There's all those things and then there's his work ethic, to get where he is today to be ready to play at AFL level after three VFL games is a credit to him.
'The spotlight is going to be on him like it was on Sammy (Lalor) earlier in the year and like it has been for all our first round picks.
'We've got to help him through that (and) he understands he's got a nice block of games to start feeling like he belongs at AFL level.'

Rioli's season-long record of 40 in a debut campaign appears within sight. Channel 9 presenter Danika Mason has copped a brutal blow with her rugby league boyfriend, Liam Knight, set to spend the next year on the other side of the world. Knight, who signed a deal to join Super League club Hull FC back in March, has set the league alight since making the move from Australia. As a result of his excellent start to the 2025 season, the 30-year-old has been rewarded with a new 12-month contract. While it shows Knight is thriving in his career, it means he will continue to be more than 17,000km away from the Wide World of Sports host, who recently replaced Alex Cullen on Nine's Today Show. Knight, who hails from Alice Springs, was released by the Canterbury Bulldogs last year, after playing just two matches for the club in 2024. He was quickly snapped up by Hull ahead of the 2025 season. Knight was originally set to spend seven months in the UK playing for Hull. But after becoming a fan favourite and one of the club's most consistent players, he penned a new 12-month deal. 'I'm stoked to be staying here – I really love this club and I'm really excited to see what we can keep building over the next 12 months,' Knight told the club's website announcing the news of his re-signing. 'I've really fallen in love with the fans and the atmosphere, both home and away – they're so dedicated. I love the playing group we have here and the coaching staff too – it's a fun place to come to work and that's being reflected in our performances.' While his career is thriving, it is a tough blow to his budding relationship with Mason. The couple's relationship became the talk of the rugby league world last year after Mason split with fiancee Todd Liubinskas in 2023 and called off their wedding, just weeks before they were set to get married. The exact reason for the couple's split remains unclear and became a topic of much speculation among footy and media insiders, with the party line being that it was due to a breakdown in trust. Mason was first pictured on a date with Knight at The Butler restaurant in Sydney's Potts Point in February 2024 before the pair confirmed they were together on Instagram in July. Grace Kim's breakthrough major win at the Evian Championship has moved fellow Aussie Steph Kyriacou to declare she needs to 'get a wriggle on' to join her mate on the list. The women's British Open at Royal Porthcrawl in Wales provides the perfect opportunity for the 24-year-old Sydneysider, who grew up playing links-style golf at 'St Micks' on the coast at Little Bay and expects to thrive in similar conditions this week. 'I love links golf,' Kyriacou, the world No.42, said. 'I love playing in the wind. I grew up at St Mick's (St Michael's Golf Club), which is on the water. I've grown up trying to be creative, so I feel like that's when I play my best golf. 'It's proper links. It's going to be fun. A couple blind tee shots, lots of slopes in the greens. It's windy, right on the beach, so it's going to be a proper links week.' Kyriacou is one of nine Australians in the field after Hira Naveed came through late qualifying. The camaraderie between the Australians on tour was on show when Kim won the Evian Championship in France to become a major champion. Kyriacou's greenside video of her mate's miracle chip-in after putting her second shot on the opening playoff hole 'in the p*ss' and the cheers of the likes of Hannah Green and Minjee Lee went viral. But for Kyriacou, who was runner-up at the Evian the previous year and is yet to notch an LPGA win, Kim's brilliant win was also a reminder of what's possible for herself. 'It's kind of pretty competitive against all of us, I would say. Gracie's got one up on me or two off on me, so I need to get a little wriggle along, don't I?' she said. 'I feel good. We had a little team chat the other day, so have some things that I want to put in this week and just more about how I'm going to play golf. 'Not so much about performance stuff, but hopefully that helps me a bit. I think it will, but I'm looking forward to it.' Kyriacou used her practice rounds at Porthcrawl to play practice shots from everywhere, including the 'hay' that lines a lot of fairways and can provide a bit of trouble. 'Ideally, I don't miss one, but it's a bit inconsistent in the rough. Some parts are OK and then other parts are no bueno (not good),' she said. 'Just trying to get into the thick stuff, get used to what the worst could be.' Kyriacou will be joined at the Open by fellow Australians Kim, Naveed, Green, Lee, Cassie Porter, Kirsten Rudgeley, Karis Davidson and Gabi Ruffels.
