'My laptop is a bomb': US Air Force veteran makes midair threat; triggers emergency landing in Florida
A domestic flight in the US was forced to make an emergency landing after a 27-year-old man, recently discharged from a psychiatric facility, allegedly claimed mid-air that his laptop was a bomb.
The incident occurred on Allegiant air flight 1023, which had departed St Pete–Clearwater international airport in Florida and was headed to Roanoke–Blacksburg regional airport in Virginia, with 177 passengers and six crew members on board.
According to the New York post, which quoted the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the situation unfolded less than an hour after take-off on Sunday afternoon, when the accused, Taj Malik Taylor, allegedly told his seatmate twice, 'I have a bomb.'
When questioned, he pointed to his laptop and added, 'My laptop is a bomb.'
Alarmed, the passenger informed the cabin crew, prompting the pilot to turn the aircraft around. The plane made an emergency landing approximately 40 minutes after take-off and was met by law enforcement officers on the ground.
Taylor was arrested around 2 pm, and a K-9 unit was deployed to search his belongings. Authorities said multiple passengers overheard the bomb threat.

Following Taylor's removal, the flight resumed its journey and landed safely in Roanoke at 7:57 pm.
'Allegiant does not tolerate disruptive behaviour of any kind,' the airline said in a statement.
Taylor is a former high school football player from Largo, Florida, who suffered a Grade 3 concussion during a game in 2013, which caused him to lose consciousness for over 10 minutes. Such injuries are linked to long-term neurological effects.
He has also claimed to be a US Air Force veteran and is currently a seminary student at Liberty University in Virginia.
According to an FBI affidavit, Taylor did not directly admit to making the threats but said the woman sitting next to him had been 'rude.' He also told investigators he had recently been discharged from a mental health facility, had taken his medication the night before, and suffers from a lack of clarity when unmedicated.
Taylor has been charged with felony offences for making threats and providing false information. He was handed over to the US Marshals on Monday and made his initial appearance in Tampa federal court the same day.
If convicted, Taylor could face up to five years in prison, a fine of $25,000, or both, for making a false bomb threat. The FBI is leading the investigation.

The police official further said that Pavittar Singh Batala will be questioned in the case once he is extradited to India. He added that as per reports, he was arrested in California on July 10 or 11, and on July 7, he allegedly made a WhatsApp call to the Rumi-based shopkeeper. The police official maintained that as per the preliminary probe, Pavittar Singh Batala might have hired two sharpshooters, arrested recently by Ludhiana rural police, through Serbia-based Lovepreet Singh Lovely, who belongs to Hariau Khurd in the Batala area. He added that they suspect the involvement of Rupinder Singh, a US-based brother-in-law of shopkeeper Jatinder Singh, from Tarewal in Moga, who blames the latter for his divorce from his sister. Police sources said that Rupinder is an NRI in the US and is a rich person with contacts. They added that Rupinder also faces allegations of giving a contract to contract killers for getting his brother-in-law Jatinder killed in 2019 and was also named in two more FIRs lodged by the shopkeeper and his family in January and July this year. Hyderabad Cricket Association under fire: 8 cases filed since 2011; CID probes stadium fund scam involving top officials
HYDERABAD: The crime investigation department (CID) has been probing several cases of alleged misappropriation of funds involving members of Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) since 2011. With the recent arrest of five people, including the association's president A Jagan Mohan Rao, treasurer CJ Srinivas Rao and CEO Suneel Kante, a total of eight cases have been filed against HCA office bearers. Five cases are currently under investigation, and three are awaiting trial. The petitioner accused the HCA office bearers of inflating the construction costs of the RGI Cricket Stadium at Uppal from 30.26 crore to 108 crore, alleging willful negligence and kickbacks from the successful bidder. The petitioner claimed that HCA paid 910 per bucket chair instead of the market rate of 450, resulting in an excess payment of over 2 crore to the supplier. The second case registered on the complaint of D Manikyam, accused Shivlal Yadav, P Yadagiri, Arshad Ayub, K John Manoj, G Vinod, and others of misappropriating funds for the construction of the RGI Cricket Stadium, and the purchase of floodlights, refrigerators, generators, and bowling machines. A third FIR filed in 2014, on the complaint of Aijaj Ali Qureishi, accused Arshad Ayub, DS Chalapathi, K John Manoj, G Vinod, R Devraj, Naresh Sharma and others in the alleged wilful collusion to award contracts for constructing canopies at two stands of the RGI Cricket Stadium in Uppal, causing a loss of over 3 crore to HCA. Chargesheets were filed between 2016 and 2020 against the accused in the ACB special court in Nampally. All three cases are currently pending trial due to a stay on proceedings from the high court. In Oct 2023, four additional criminal cases were filed based on a complaint by HCA CEO Suneel Kante. These cases accuse former HCA office bearers, including President Md Azharuddin, Secretary R Vijay Anand, and Treasurer Surender Agarwal, of misappropriating 3.85 crore of HCA funds used for purchasing equipments for the RGI Cricket Stadium in Uppal.
