
Why is Saudi Arabia at the Gold Cup? It's the latest in the Kingdom's soft power campaign
This summer, the Gold Cup will serve as the crucial litmus test for the US national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, the vast majority of which will take place on home soil. The draw placed the Americans in Group D, alongside Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago … and Saudi Arabia.
Why is a Middle Eastern country on the Asian continent in a regional competition half a world away? The answer lies in some of the strange twists that world football tends to take.
The Kingdom is Concacaf's official 'invited guest' of the tournament, continuing a tradition that started early in the tournament's founding, during which time the likes of Brazil, South Korea, and South Africa were among the guest nations to take part. The practice was abandoned in the early-00's, but was restarted in the 2021 edition when Qatar, another authoritarian gulf state, was invited to take part the year before the nation hosted the World Cup. They returned for the 2023 edition, as well. Concacaf announced Saudi Arabia as the guest participant just eight days after the Kingdom secured the 2034 World Cup in December 2024.
'We are very pleased that through our relationship with the Asian Football Confederation we have been able to collaborate with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and their President Yasser Al-Misehal, both on and off the pitch,' Concacaf president Victor Montagliani said in the official press release. 'We look forward to welcoming one of Asia's top men's national teams to compete with the best in Concacaf.'
The top three teams in the Gold Cup – the US, Canada, and Mexico – are already qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as co-hosts. What they needed were serious opponents in a competitive setting. Instead, they got Saudi Arabia–a team currently struggling in its own World Cup qualification campaign – granted a spot not on merit, but seemingly in exchange for a hefty financial contribution to Concacaf.
Excluded from the press release announcing Saudi Arabia's Gold Cup participation is Concacaf's partnership with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) – the state-owned sovereign wealth fund chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The injection of funds from the PIF is expected to boost soccer development in the region, with more tournaments for men, women, and youth participants. 'Together, we will advance a series of initiatives to create a positive and lasting impact across all Concacaf competitions,' Mohammed AlSayyad, head of corporate brand at PIF, said at the time.
It's not the first and will hardly be the Saudi regime's last effort to turn the entire world of sports to its advantage. Over the past few years, the PIF has reshaped global sports through aggressive investments and strategic acquisitions aimed at bolstering the kingdom's global influence and soft power. From acquiring top-tier soccer clubs like Newcastle United to ambitious plans in boxing, golf, and esports, the PIF has enabled the Saudi regime to exploit sports as a diplomatic and economic tool, while raising concerns about conflicts of interest, governance, and the growing authoritarian grip on world sports.
Concacaf's deal with PIF notably comes after the confederation designated Aramco, the Saudi state-run oil company, as the 'official energy partner' for all of CONCACAF's national team and club competitions. The confederation then announced that Riyadh Air would be the 'official airline partner' in a multi-year deal. The PIF-owned airline, which is also a shirt sponsor of La Liga side Atlético Madrid, is yet to officially launch.
The U.S. government has also shown concerns for the PIF's dealings in the United States. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, has been investigating how the Saudi state is using its sovereign wealth fund to buy influence in the US, including its ongoing bid to create a merger between the Saudi-owned LIV Golf league and the PGA Tour. In an attempt to hinder the investigation, however, the PIF has filed lawsuits in Saudi Arabia seeking to block four PIF consultants, Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey & Company, M. Klein & Company, and Teneo–all headquartered in the United States–from responding to subpoenas issued by the subcommittee.
In April, Blumenthal released a new report on his findings into the 2023 framework agreement between the PGA Tour and the PIF, alleging that the PIF only tried to negotiate with the PGA Tour in order to avoid discovery.
'Our report reveals how present laws may enable foreign influence without transparency,' Bluemnthal said. 'Very simply, our present defenses do not protect against increasingly sophisticated threats.'
Blumenthal's report lands as the Trump administration actively undermines the US government's capacity to combat foreign influence, scaling back enforcement of things like the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and hollowing out the very departments tasked with investigating foreign influence efforts. It's a vulnerability the Saudi government is well positioned to exploit, particularly through PIF's expanding footprint in global sports.
By weaponizing sports as part of its national strategy, the Kingdom is deepening its influence in North America, bolstering its global image ahead of the 2034 World Cup, and dismantling scrutiny over its human rights record, one critic at a time – the soft power equivalent of a perfectly timed goal.
Saudi Arabia's participation in the Gold Cup isn't just about football. It's a calculated strategy rooted in geopolitical maneuvering and influence management. The Gold Cup is merely the latest arena in which the Kingdom is flexing its growing influence.

Liverpool's statement in full as club's owners pay tribute to Diogo Jota following tragic car crash
Liverpool FC have released a statement paying tribute to Diogo Jota after the forward passed away in a car accident aged 28. The Portuguese international had been travelling in the Spanish province of Zamora with his brother Andre Silva, 26, also a professional footballer, when their card left the road in the early hours of Thursday and caught fire. The Spanish Guardia Civil confirmed the deaths of both men in the accident. Tributes have flooded in from across Portugal and the footballing world. Jota played an integral role in Liverpool's attack under Jurgen Klopp and latterly Arne Slot, lifting his maiden Premier League title only months ago, as well as the FA Cup and League Cup during his five-year spell at Anfield. The Club released a statement in the aftermath of his death, reading: 'Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. 'Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. 'We will continue to provide them with our full support.' Liverpool's ownership team, along with Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, later provided heartfelt tributes of their own, joining manager Arne Slot in remembering the forward described as 'a loved one to all of us'. 'On behalf of the leadership teams at Liverpool Football Club and Fenway Sports Group, we offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of our number 20, Diogo Jota, and his brother Andre Silva,' a statement on behalf of Billy Hogan, John Henry, Tom Werner and Mike Gordon read. 'This tragic situation and the reality of it is truly shocking, devastating and has left us numb with grief. We therefore cannot imagine how the immediate and wider family of these remarkable brothers must be feeling. Our thoughts, prayers and support are with them all. 'We all know what Diogo could do on the field of play and the vital role he played in our successes since he joined this club in 2020. How he quickly became a firm fan favourite, and his song reverberated around Anfield and in stadiums across the world. So many special moments, so many special memories. He had a zest for life that was utterly contagious. The national team has said they are 'devastated' to hear of the forward's death. Jota was 'not only a fantastic player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his teammates and opponents', his national team mates added.

Sarina Wiegman: I am very caring but that's not very helpful in this job
The perception of England manager Sarina Wiegman is that she is direct, straight-talking and, by her own admission, someone who does not beat around the bush. But there is a side to Wiegman that she keeps deliberately private – from the public and, specifically, from her players. Wiegman, who has been in charge of the Lionesses since 2021 and is preparing for her third major tournament as manager, says she has a maternal side that she has to suppress. 'I am actually very caring and that's often not very helpful in this job,' Wiegman says. 'I want to take care of people but I have a job where I have to make hard decisions. Then I, as a former player and maybe as a mum, I'm trying to not put myself in their shoes and think, 'Oh, they must feel horrible' because I have to shut that out for that moment. 'That is one of the most difficult parts of the job because it's not the nicest part but I have to give that clarity – because that is my job.' Wiegman had some difficult conversations with players in the build-up to this summer's European Championship in Switzerland and they led to a far more turbulent build-up to this tournament than for Euro 2022, which England won, and the 2023 World Cup, where they finished as runners-up. Long-serving goalkeeper Mary Earps was told that she would not be the No 1 for this tournament, with Hannah Hampton starting instead. That prompted Earps to retire, a decision which shocked Wiegman and her team-mates. Wiegman has not revealed the details of her conversation with Earps or indeed others but says it is better for players to know where they stand, even if they do not like the outcome. 'When I have conversations with players, I think it's really important to have clarity,' she says. 'Especially now closer to the tournament that I give clarity that tomorrow things could change like [clicks fingers]. 'Clarity is, 'OK, this is where I am, this is my job and this, this, this'. I try to do that before a game. There are also moments in friendlies where you don't want clarity so they can compete for the spot. The clarity is you don't want clarity! Then you move on. What I try to do is give them as much information as possible. 'The players call that direct but do not confuse that with being blunt. I am not blunt – well, I hope not. I am trying to be honest and clear about things to give them context.' Lucy Bronze, who is preparing for her seventh major tournament with the Lionesses, believes Wiegman has relaxed since taking over as manager four years ago. 'I think her flexibility as a manager has definitely changed,' Bronze says. 'She came in with a few more rules set in place, she was the manager and the boss and we all respected Sarina for that reason. 'Over the years, her getting to know the team and the dynamics of each player, gaining trust with players, you can see how she's changed a little bit. It's a good thing she's adapted with the way that the team has adapted.' Wiegman told players to stop wearing jewellery if it interfered with fitness-monitoring devices when she first arrived in September 2021 but insists she in fact 'hates rules' and has changed her outlook over the years. 'On and off the pitch the game has changed so much that I have to adapt too. People sometimes say I don't change. I think my values won't change but I have to adapt to new situations and figure out, 'OK, what's best for the team now to help them to be at their best as a team and as individuals too'. 'My approach is the same, I just worry a little bit less. In the beginning I wanted to solve everything but as a coach you just have to let go sometimes and let things solve themselves.' That is also the case when it comes to potential conflict or having open and honest conversations within a team environment. She adds: 'I always try to compare it with your family. In your family, you sometimes have a conflict or a discussion, that's completely normal. I think you need to have those discussions, share what you feel. 'We all know that we want to go forward to the highest level. We also know we need each other, so have the conversation and move on.' Wiegman may be direct but she is also a winner. She has won the last two European Championships, first with the Netherlands in 2017 and then England three years ago. Retaining her European title with the Lionesses will not be easy but she is by far the most experienced manager at the tournament. 'You're just trying to bring the team together and try to get everyone in the best possible way that they perform at their highest level,' she says. 'And hopefully we can do that six games in a row.'
