‘How can IPS officer have links with guilty constable?': Lokayukta special court judge
BENGALURU: 'Holding a high position in Karnataka Lokayukta, how an IPS officer (Srinath Joshi Mahadev) was having contact with a head constable (Ningappa) and meeting him in his office constantly knowing fully well that he has been dismissed from the service for misconduct? How did he (Joshi) share the screenshots of investments made in cryptocurrency and crypto wallet with the accused Ningappa if he is innocent and not part of the conspiracy or has no nexus with him,' Lokayukta special court judge KM Radhakrishna asked the counsel for Joshi, who has been relieved as SP from the Lokayukta office.
The court shot off these posers while rejecting Joshi's anticipatory bail petition after hearing the Lokayukta police, who sought custodial interrogation of Joshi to unearth the truth. The court said the allegations against Joshi are serious and larger public interest is involved in the case. The High Court has stayed further proceedings of this crime till June 30.
The prosecution argued that Joshi is accused of joining hands with Ningappa and conspiring with him to extract money from officials of various government departments. He was making phone calls to officials through Ningappa and illegally extracting money, threatening to raid them. He was investing the bribes in cryptocurrency wallets and Bitcoins with Ningappa's help, they said.
Joshi's counsel argued that just because Ningappa was his subordinate for two years while he was an SP in Chitradurga, there is an apprehension about his links with Ningappa, even though his name was not in the complaint or FIR. Joshi is innocent but has been falsely implicated in the case which will affect his promotion in August, the counsel alleged.
Except Ningappa's blind statement about his association with Joshi, no materials were found against him but there is apprehension of Joshi's arrest. Since he has been relieved from the Lokayukta and has reported to the parent department, there is no question of tampering with or threatening witnesses. If he is arrested by the Lokayukta police, Joshi's service record will be impacted, he argued.
Manjunath Honnaiah Naik, Public Prosecutor, Karnataka Lokayukta, said Joshi had been in constant touch with Ningappa and there are call details records, CCTV footage of Lokayukta office and photos. Also Joshi had shared Whatsapp screenshots of cryptocurrency investments and crypto wallets with Ningappa, he argued.

Ex-MLA Lingaiah labelled as a disturber of peace
Nakrekal (Nalgonda): Tension prevailed near Nakrekal Police Station in Nalgonda district as a large group of women staged a protest demanding the arrest of former MLA Chirumarthi Lingaiah and BRS state leader Cheruku Sudhakar. The protest was triggered following the arrest of a BRS social media activist Nagendra Babu by the police on Friday. In response, former MLA Lingaiah visited the police station and allegedly lashed out at Circle Inspector Rajashekar. The women alleged that Babu was posting false and misleading content on social media. They claimed that instead of supporting police action, former MLA Lingaiah was spreading baseless allegations and blaming the Congress party, which they condemned as inappropriate. The women further accused BRS leaders of creating unrest in peaceful villages. Holding placards and raising slogans, the women demanded the immediate arrest of both Chirumarthi Lingaiah for making false allegations, and Cheruku Sudhakar for his alleged involvement in inciting disturbances. Later, the protestors submitted a formal representation to the CI. The demonstration saw significant participation from local women, asserting their stand against misinformation and political provocation. It may be mentioned here that the former Nakrekal MLA Lingaiah, on Friday, had alleged that police were acting like Congress agents and targeting BRS activists for questioning on social media. He had condemned the arrest of BRS worker Nagendra Babu from Mangalapally village, who posted a comment in a local WhatsApp group that went viral. Earlier this week, Lingaiah also alleged harassment by officials backed by the ruling party. He alleged that despite making 26 phone calls to the District Collector regarding an issue, there was no response, which forced him to approach the Grievance Day programme on Monday where, after a lengthy argument with the Collector, he submitted his complaint. He further alleged that former Nakrekal Market Committee Chairman Koppula Pradeep Reddy and former Chinnakaparthy Sarpanch Boya Vanishreen's representations were being ignored deliberately. He claimed officials were submitting false reports under pressure from the ruling party and MLA as part of a political conspiracy against Pradeep Reddy.

Breach of marriage promise not cheating: Telangana HC
HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court has ruled that merely failing to fulfil a promise of marriage does not constitute criminal cheating unless there is evidence of dishonest inducement resulting in the delivery of property or other material benefit. The court made this observation while quashing criminal proceedings against Rajapuram Jeevan Reddy, a resident of Karmanghat. The case stemmed from a complaint filed by Karakalla Padmini Reddy, who alleged that Jeevan Reddy had reneged on a promise to marry her. According to the complaint, the two were in a relationship during their college years in 2016, during which Jeevan Reddy allegedly promised to marry Padmini after obtaining his parents' consent. She claimed he later withdrew from the commitment in front of friends but subsequently acknowledged his mistake and reaffirmed his intent to marry—only to back out again later. Based on her complaint, police registered a cheating case and trial proceedings commenced in a lower court in LB Nagar. Jeevan Reddy then approached the High Court seeking to quash the case. The court stressed that, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, an offence of cheating requires a clear indication of dishonest intent at the time the promise was made. In this case, the court found no allegations suggesting fraudulent or dishonest intent at the inception of the promise, nor any evidence that the complainant was deceived into parting with property or acting differently. The promise was reportedly withdrawn due to family objections, which the court said did not meet the legal threshold for cheating.
