Grigor Dimitrov 's struggles with injuries continued on Monday, July 7, 2025, when he was left devastated after being forced to retire injured at Wimbledon. He was two sets up on world number one Jannik Sinner before he fell on the floor holding his right pectoral after serving an ace. Italian top seed Sinner is now in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for a second time.Bulgaria's Dimitrov was leading an enthralling contest 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 before being seriously injured. After being caught up by injury during the match, he appeared to be in serious discomfort, and Sinner rushed over to help. After Dimitrov returned to his chair, he received medical treatment. Then he briefly left the court only to return teary-eyed to call off the match and shake hands with the Italian star player. He received a standing ovation as Sinner accompanied him off the court.Dimitrov served an ace out wide to hold serve for 2-2 in the third set and then collapsed in pain, holding his right pectoral muscle. The Bulgarian showed initial signs of the injury after he missed a low backhand volley at 40/0 in that game. He swung his arm across his body to take the shot, then reached for his pectoral muscle. For Dimitrov, 34, it is the latest in a series of injury struggles; he retired injured from his first-round matches at the Australian Open and French Open.Notably, world number one Sinner had also taken a medical timeout midway through the second set for an apparent elbow injury. He had looked uncomfortable after he fell in the opening game but later appeared to be finding his rhythm when Dimitrov's injury surfaced.Following the match, Sinner said, "Honestly, I don't know what to say. He is an incredible player; I think we all saw this today. He's been so unlucky in the past couple of years. An incredible player and a good friend of mine, also, we understand each other very well off the court, too. Seeing him in this position, honestly, if there were a chance that he could play the next round, he would deserve it,' as quoted by ATPTour.com. "I hope he has a speedy recovery. It's very unlucky from his side,' added Sinner. The world number also stated that he does not take this as a win and calls it a 'very unfortunate moment.' As far as Dimitrov's battle with injuries is concerned, the latter stages of his career have been marred by injury. It is pertinent to mention that, besides the Bulgarian, no other player has been forced to retire injured from ATP Tour matches more often than him. He has now quit 12 matches. He has retired injured on each of his past five Grand Slam appearances, including at this year's French and Australian Opens.Sinner will next face World No. 10 Ben Shelton in the quarter-final. This will be his fourth consecutive appearance in the Wimbledon quarter-final. Shelton, 22, American, earlier rallied past Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals at SW19 for the first time.

Wimbledon, On This Day: Leander Paes wins the junior title

Leander Paes' record at Wimbledon is one to be envied. The stalwart of Indian tennis has won five titles on the Wimbledon court, four in the mixed doubles and one in the men's doubles. The first Asian man to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Paes' name is firmly etched into the history books. However, while Paes is well-known for his exploits on the doubles courts, his exploits at the 1990 Wimbledon Junior Championships should not be forgotten. 1990 would prove to be the year that Paes left a mark on junior tennis. He began the year strongly, competing at the junior event of the Australian Open and making his way to the final where he lost to Dirk Dier of West Germany. He arrived at SW19 eager to make go one better, but faced a tough field between him and the title. Paes went into the competition seeded eleventh, and quickly progressed through the competition with clinicality. Between the first round and the semifinal, he dropped just a single set (to Canada's Sebastian Leblanc), knocking out fifth seed Leblanc, and seventh seed Ivan Baron in the semifinal in the process. All of this set up a final against South Africa's Marcos Ondruska, the second seed on July 8 1990. Paes narrowly took the first set 7-5, but Ondruska hit back to claim the second 6-2. The game was delicately poised at a set apiece. However, the young Indian starlet was able to dig deep, and took the final set 6-4 to seal his first title at Wimbledon. In doing so, he became only the third Indian player to win the junior title after Ramanathan Krishnan and Ramesh Krishnan. Reflecting on the match in an interview with Sportstar in 1991, Paes said, 'I had worked hard for it and I was happy with the reward. There is no short cut to success. It was a good final and I won 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. I was confident of winning even before the final.' In winning the title, Paes established himself as one of the brightest young talents in both Indian and world tennis, and started a lifelong love story with the hallowed courts of the SW19.

Sinner to undergo MRI on injured elbow after 'unfortunate fall'

London: After a potentially damaging fall in the early stages of his fourth-round clash at Wimbledon against Grigor Dimitrov, world no. 1 Jannik Sinner is planning to get an MRI to further analyse the injury. Sinner, however, reached the fourth round at Wimbledon after Dimitrov was forced to retire due to injury when leading 6-3, 7-5, 2-2. In the very first game of the fourth-round matchup, Sinner appeared en route to a shock defeat, having jarred his elbow during an innocuous-looking slide to the ground. He later received a medical timeout for treatment on his elbow. Having recently split with his physiotherapist and trainer, he will work with the ATP Tour's physios on his elbow. "It was a quite unfortunate fall. I checked the videos a little bit, and it didn't seem a tough one, but I still felt it quite a lot, especially [on the] serve and forehand. I could feel it. So let's see. Tomorrow we are going to check to see how it is, and then we'll see," Sinner said in his post-match press conference. "Here they have good ATP physios, in any case. The doctor's good. As I said, tomorrow we are going to check with MRI to see if there's something serious, and then we try to adjust it," he added. Dimitrov was leading by two sets, when the No.19 seed collapsed to the turf holding the pectoral muscle beneath his right arm. He had just held serve for 2-2, but early in that game it was clear that he was in discomfort, and by the time he finished the game, he was almost weeping with pain. Dimitrov barely able to lift his serving arm and was forced to retire injured. Unbelievably, it is the fifth successive Grand Slam where he has been compelled to withdraw mid-match. Sinner, who goes through to the quarter-finals where he will face the big-serving American Ben Shelton, was full of praise for Dimitrov's effort to build a 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 lead on Centre Court. "He served incredibly well. Very precise, also very fast. Changed up the game very, very well. It was a bit breezy, and he used the wind in the best possible way. I could feel that he prepared the match in a very good way, and he executed even better. He was playing some great tennis... I think he's showing his potential. It's very unfortunate, as I said on court. I wish him a speedy recovery,' said Sinner.
