PFF grades for Bears' projected starting defense in 2025
There are high expectations surrounding the Chicago Bears heading into the 2025 season following the hiring of head coach Ben Johnson, who made a huge addition with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who should take this defense to the next level.
The Bears made some big additions this offseason along the defensive line, including the free-agent acquisitions of defensive tackle Grady Jarrett (an experienced veteran and proven leader) and edge rusher Dayo Odeyingbo (an ascending pass rusher poised to make a leap). They also added some potential playmakers in the 2025 NFL draft, including defensive tackle Shemar Turner, linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II and cornerback Zah Frazier.
With Allen taking the reins on defense, there's little doubt the unit should prosper behind their new defensive coordinator's aggressive style of defense. But there were some encouraging moments from Chicago's starters last season and for the newcomers joining the fold, as evidenced by Pro Football Focus.
PFF grades (2024) for projected starters on Bears defense:
EDGE Montez Sweat - 65.6
EDGE Dayo Odeyingbo - 66.1
DT Gervon Dexter Sr. - 70.3
DT Grady Jarrett - 62.1
LB T.J. Edwards - 60.7
LB Tremaine Edmunds - 59.2
CB Jaylon Johnson - 76.2
CB Tyrique Stevenson - 58.9
NCB Kyler Gordon - 76.0
S Kevin Byard - 72.8
S Jaquan Brisker - 65.3

3 Chargers players on the roster bubble who helped themselves vs. Lions

The Chargers defeated the Lions, 34-7, in the Hall of Fame game Thursday night, where there were plenty of players who helped their chances of competing for a spot on the 53-man roster with strong preseason outings. Following Los Angeles' Hall of Fame game win, here's a look at which roster-bubble players helped their cause: CB Nikko Reed There's a competition for spots in the backend of the cornerback room, and Reed's showings this summer have warranted his worth for one of them. The undrafted rookie out of Oregon had an exceptional showing on Thursday night, highlighted by a 60-yard interception return and two passes defended. Reed received the highest Pro Football Focus grade (92.9) among all rookies in the Hall of Fame Game, including a 95.3 coverage grade. EDGE Caleb Murphy It wouldn't be surprising if the Chargers only roster four edge rushers, with the presumed players being Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu, Bud Dupree, and fourth-round pick Kyle Kennard. However, Murphy has been making his case to make the 53-man roster. Special teams play for depth players is valuable, and he has taken advantage of those reps with the first-team units. Murphy forced a fumble on the opening kickoff that led to an early touchdown. On defense, he showed juice as a pass rusher and made an impact in the run game, recording a tackle for loss. RB Hassan Haskins There's a battle in the backfield for the spots behind Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris, and Harris ran the ball like he was hungry to earn one of them. Haskins had six carries for 34 yards, with an average of 5.7 yards per carry, the most among Chargers running backs. Kimani Vidal (two touchdowns) and Nyheim Miller-Hines (34 yards) also contributed to the ground game. But overall, I felt like Haskins had the best run among the crop.

Keenan Allen could be nearing a potential reunion with the Chargers

Keenan Allen achieved quite a bit in his career with the Chargers — and that's probably one of the reasons why they'd like to give him another chance. The veteran wide receiver, who was a salary-cap casualty when the Chargers traded him last year, was scheduled to meet with the team Thursday to discuss a possible reunion, according to multiple reports. A potential move to sign the six-time Pro Bowl selection makes sense for a Chargers team in need of a veteran receiving option after Mike Williams' surprising retirement at the start of training camp. Allen was the longest-tenured player on the Chargers when they traded him to the Chicago Bears in March 2024 to free up cap space ahead of free agency. He caught 904 passes for 10,530 yards and 59 touchdowns over 11 seasons with the franchise. He caught 380 passes for 4,125 yards and 25 touchdowns playing alongside Justin Herbert. Allen caught 70 passes for 744 yards and seven touchdowns with the Bears last season, but at 33 his best days are probably behind him — which explains why he's still a free agent in August. Still, with plenty of unknowns in the Chargers' receiving corps outside of Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston, it makes sense that the Chargers would want to bolster their passing game with a more known quantity in a player like Allen.
