Visiting US parks just got pricier — for foreign tourists, thanks to Trump's new order
He has issued an executive order on Thursday directing the Interior Department to raise entrance and recreation fees for foreign tourists visiting US national parks. The move, which is expected to generate more than $90 million per year, will also give priority to US residents when applying for permits. Critics claim the move undermines inclusivity and conservation efforts.
For any national park that presently charges admission, it directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who is in charge of the National Park Service, to "develop a strategy" to increase entrance costs and recreation pass prices for visitors who are not U.S. citizens.

How much more will foreign tourists pay?
According to the Interior Department's May fiscal year budget proposal, such a surcharge would bring in over $90 million a year.
Live Events
Not all national parks have entry fees, and those that do have different prices. Typically, guests can buy an annual pass that can be used at one park or in a particular area of the nation, or they can buy a regular daily or weekly pass to one particular park.
A more extensive "America the Beautiful" pass, available at all national parks across the country for $80, is also provided by the Park Service.
Entrance fees to some of the most visited locations in the National Park Service, such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Yellowstone, are $20 per person or $35 per car.
Will Americans get park access priority?
The Interior Department was also directed by President Trump to give U.S. citizens "preferential treatment" over foreign tourists with regard to "recreational access rules, including permitting or lottery rules" that may be in effect at parks. Americans do get priority access to park permits and recreation with this new order.
While some well-known national parks have reservation systems for access and camping during high seasons, the ruling did not specify what those preferential treatment standards would entail.

What else does Donald Trump's executive order entail?
The president also created the "Make America Beautiful Again" Commission in a separate executive order, whose duties include encouraging voluntary conservation activities and increasing recreational access to public lands and rivers.
A memorandum signed in January 2017, at the end of former President Barack Obama's second term, that aimed to advance diversity and inclusion at national parks was also repealed by the order Thursday. The action seems to be a part of the Trump administration's continued attempt to reduce federal diversity initiatives.

What does this mean for national park funding?
The Interior Department also suggested reducing funding for the Park Service by about $1 billion in its fiscal year budget for 2026, the worst budget drop in the agency's history. The most recent actions follow efforts by the Trump administration to cut the number of employees at the National Park Service. About 1,000 Park Service workers were let go by the administration in February as part of its efforts to implement significant budget and staff cuts throughout the federal government.
Since President Trump took office in January, the Park Service has lost 24 percent of its permanent employees, according to a report this week from the National Parks Conservation Association.
FAQs
Are U.S. park fees increasing for everyone?
No, only for foreign visitors. US residents will continue to pay standard rates, while international tourists may face new surcharges.
Will Americans have improved access to reservations now?
Possible. The order prioritizes US residents for permits and lotteries at parks with limited access systems.

UAE airfares plunge: Cheap last-min flights to London, Istanbul, New York & more for as Low as Dh1,300
Currently, the most affordable flight from Dubai to London is priced at Dh1,300 ($354) for travel between July 15 and 31, a significant drop from last year's rates. (Representative Image) This summer, UAE residents are seeing a rare opportunity for budget-friendly travel, with affordable last-minute flight deals on offer, even during the peak months of July and August. For instance, tickets from Dubai to London are now as low as Dh1,300 ($354), a steep drop from last year's Dh2,500 ($681). Similarly, flights from Abu Dhabi to popular destinations like Mumbai are priced from Dh708 ($193), offering further savings compared to last year. Airfares See a Welcome Decrease Travel experts attribute the dip in airfares to various factors, including the easing of previous price hikes. Rashid Abbas, Managing Director of Arooha Travels, told local media outlet Gulf News, that fares to destinations in the CIS and India have dropped to Dh610 ($166) to Dh800 ($217). He called the price reduction a much-needed relief after years of inflated ticket prices. For example, flights from Dubai to Istanbul and Cairo are priced at Dh653 ($177) and Dh1,430 ($389), respectively, offering budget-friendly options for those planning a last-minute trip. 'We're seeing a much more manageable increase in airfares this July,' Abbas noted, acknowledging the positive shift compared to the steep prices of the past two years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scientists: Tinnitus? Direct flights to European cities like London, Barcelona, and Lisbon are still priced between Dh2,500 ($681) and Dh3,800 ($1,032), which remains out of reach for some budget-conscious travelers. Still, there are affordable alternatives. Afi Ahmed, Chairman of Smart Travels, explained to local media, that while certain European routes remain expensive, budget airlines such as Eurowings, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi are offering better deals. For example, flights from Dubai to Paris on these carriers cost Dh2,815 ($766), while a ticket to Berlin is priced at Dh1,860 ($506). Even long-haul flights are seeing more reasonable prices. A direct flight from Dubai to New York, for instance, is priced at Dh2,945 ($800), a significant improvement from previous years. Many people are now choosing to travel during off-peak months to take advantage of cheaper fares. Instead of long vacations of one or two months, travelers are opting for shorter trips of two to ten days. The trend towards shorter holidays has led to increased demand for destinations closer to the UAE, such as Azerbaijan, Schengen countries, and parts of Africa. These locations offer affordability and convenience, making them more attractive to residents seeking quick getaways. Additionally, corporate leave policies, typically no longer than 20 days, have prompted many employees to break their travel into two or three shorter trips each year. In cities like Dubai, residents often return by early August, planning future trips for winter or Diwali holidays.

CM announces infra revamp for Puri to turn it into world-class tourism hub
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Aiming to transform Puri into a world-class religious tourism destination and provide better amenities for residents, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday unveiled plans for a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade of the pilgrim town. Elevating Puri from municipality to a municipal corporation, Majhi announced a world-class Shri Jagannath Museum, library and research centre in the beach town, which has a population of around 4 lakh. Coinciding with the ongoing nine-day Rath Yatra festival, Majhi emphasised the need to enhance Puri's appeal beyond its iconic Jagannath Temple and scenic beaches. "To develop any tourist spot, the primary rule is how to make a tourist spend more time there, which leads to more spending," he said, highlighting the current lack of entertainment and tourist attractions in Puri beyond the 12th century shrine and sea beach. The complex will showcase the rich culture and history of Lord Jagannath, featuring mythological significance, historical events and the emotional bond between devotees and the deity through various artworks, miniature sculptures and pattachitra paintings. An auditorium with a seating capacity of around 300 will host daily light and sound shows in multiple languages, while an open-air stage will provide a platform for cultural programmes by state artists and institutions. "The project will strengthen and enrich Jagannath culture, tradition and literature, providing an excellent opportunity for thousands of tourists visiting Puri Jagannath Dham to spend quality time," Majhi remarked, expressing confidence that the initiative will secure Puri a distinct place on the tourism map. In addition to the infrastructure upgrade, the CM announced the launch of a digital donation system to facilitate offerings to Lord Jagannath. The new system, introduced on the 10th anniversary of Digital India initiative, will allow devotees to make offerings using a QR code displayed on the temple's website and at various locations in Puri. "The primary objective is not to collect more donations, but to fulfil the devotees' sense of dedication to the Lord," Majhi said, noting the system will enable devotees to pay homage to the Lord from their homes, especially during significant events like Rath Yatra. The CM said the decision to upgrade Puri into a municipal corporation aims to enhance the quality of basic amenities for both residents and millions of devotees who visit annually. "I have personally observed that the current Puri Municipality has not been able to meet the expectations of both the devotees and residents. To achieve this goal, reforms in the local self-governance system are necessary," he said, while justifying the elevation into a corporation. The new Puri Municipal Corporation will include around seven to eight panchayats from Puri Sadar and Brahmagiri blocks, allowing these areas to benefit from city-like amenities. "The process for the transformation is set to begin immediately," he said. With this, Puri has become the sixth municipal corporation in Odisha after Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Berhampur and Rourkela. Majhi reiterated the govt's commitment to developing Puri as a premier religious and tourist destination by 2036. "A prosperous Odisha cannot be envisioned without a beautiful, green, and developed Puri city," he added, highlighting the govt's vision for the future.

Forest dept draws up master plan for Kappatagudda ecotourism
Pic: A view of the scenic Kappatagudda area Gadag: Following the final notification declaring a 423.7 sq km area around Kappatagudda Wildlife Sanctuary as an eco sensitive zone by the Union ministry of environment, forest, and climate change, the state forest department has drawn up an Rs 18.3 crore tourism development master plan. Santosh Kumar Kenchappanavar, deputy conservator of forests, Gadag division, told TOI that the tourism department requested the forest department to submit a detailed project report on eco-tourism development under its 'One District One Destination' initiative in the hills. "We ensured compliance with wildlife norms and ensured that the habitat and movement of wild animals are not affected. We classified areas into A, B and C sites. Now we are waiting for the approval of the plan from the tourism department," he stated. Ashok Mandali, chairman of the Gadag taluk's Five Guarantees Schemes Implementation Authority, said: "The govt announced in the previous budget that it will encourage eco-tourism in Kappatagudda hills, which is an iconic identity of Gadag district. The tourism department will allocate grants on a priority basis." Sources in the forest department said site A is meant for the entrance, information centre, trekking paths, medicinal plants, viewpoints and adventure sports. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ukraine: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo "Site B is proposed for a wildlife and nature information centre, medicinal plants' gardens displaying scientific information on plants and facilities for medicinal plants experts. Nature camps, accommodation, a star-gazing tower, and other facilities are proposed in site C," they added. However, Shivakumara Swamiji of Nandiveri Mutt, located in Kappatagudda, said more human intervention leads to deforestation. "There is a need for eco-sensitive tourism. If tourists continue their habit of throwing plastic, destroying plants, and disturbing the habitat and movement of wild animals, the Kappatagudda hills may be polluted. Currently, weeds like lantana and parthenium are growing rapidly in the hills. The boundary of 80,000 acres was fixed by the British in 1890 itself, and there is a need to identify it. The govt has the responsibility of conserving the herbal heritage and habitat of Lambani tandas. Hence, a public hearing should be conducted before taking up any such major developmental works," he said.
