Lioness Le Tissier revisits Guernsey roots to inspire new players
The Lionesses were all wearing the shirts of their formative clubs to reflect on their own humble beginnings and to help inspire a new generation of young players."Maya is my favourite and it was really cool seeing her wear a St Martin's shirt," said Olivia, who was there with her mother Nikki."I also got an England shirt signed by her and am going to get it framed and put it above my bed when I get home."Olivia added that one of her dreams is to play in the Muratti Vase, the annual men and women's football competition, inaugurated in 1905, between teams representing the Channel Islands."I want to be as good as Maya when I'm older," she said.
During her celebrated career, 23-year-old Le Tissier became the first person from Guernsey to win an FA Cup final in nearly 65 years.She was centre-back for Manchester United Women's team when they beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at Wembley Stadium in May 2024, and she proudly carried the island's flag when she climbed the steps to receive her medal.The last time someone from the island won the trophy was in 1959, when Bill Whare helped Nottingham Forest beat Luton Town 2-1.

Pubs can stay open until 1am for England vs Italy Euros semi final
Pubs will be allowed to stay open late after England faces Italy in tomorrow's semi-final of the UEFA Women's European Championships. Licensing hours have been temporarily relaxed to allow premises which would normally have to close at 11pm to keep serving until 1am in England and Wales. The government announced the measure earlier this year, saying it would apply if either England or Wales reached the semi-finals. Pub licensing hours can be relaxed to mark events which have been deemed to have 'exceptional national significance'. The same extended hours will apply if England progresses to the final on Sunday, July 27. Policing minister Diana Johnson said at the time: 'Nothing quite brings people together like watching our national football teams, which is why we want fans to be able to enjoy every minute of these matches.' Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim wants to sign a new midfielder this summer and the Red Devils have been urged to make a move for Atletico Madrid's Conor Gallagher Manchester United have been urged to sign former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer. United are hoping to bounce back from their worst Premier League campaign this season, having finished 15th last season. They have already signed Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon and are set to complete a deal for Bryan Mbeumo, but Mirror Football understands that Ruben Amorim also want to sign a new midfielder after admitting it is an area of concern. Speaking after United's 0-0 draw with Leeds United in pre-season, Amorim said: "The gaps between our sectors was sometimes too big. We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park and you can feel it is hard to win and bring the ball. But we created chances." And former United midfielder Gordon Strachan believes Gallagher would be an excellent addition. "Man Utd don't need a bit more bite, they need legs, real legs, real closing down," Strachan told OLBG. "Can Conor Gallagher do that? Yes he can, he's definitely got legs, he's a good teammate. Has he got enough imagination? I don't know, but if you have people like that with legs in there and have imagination around them, then he'd be a good signing. "The days of the luxury player, if you want to be a top side, are gone. So, Conor Gallagher has definitely got the legs. He's got the robustness. Has he got goals? "Has he got that flair? Spanish clubs are only allowed to have three players without EU citizenship in their squad and Thiago Almada's move from Botafogo this summer means they now have four. As a result, Spanish outlet COPE are reporting that one of Gallagher, Lino and Molina will depart. Atletico have already had a busy summer, signing Almada, Clement Lenglet, Juan Musso, Matteo Ruggeri, Alex Baena and Johnny Cardoso and selling Rodrigo Riquelme and Angel Correa. Cesar Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel and Reinildo Mandava have also left after their contracts expired.

Anti-racism group questions England not taking knee
The head of football's international anti-discrimination body, Fare, has questioned England's decision to stop taking a knee before Euro 2025 matches after defender Jess Carter suffered racist abuse on social Sunday, the Lionesses said they would stop the anti-racism gesture as it was "clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism".The Football Association (FA) is said to be fully supportive of the Lionesses' decision, and shares the squad's view that something else is now executive director Piara Powar said it was time for regulator Ofcom to take action against social media platforms, but also expressed disappointment at England's stance."The players have taken a decision to stop taking the knee, which is their right," Powar told BBC Sport."I personally don't see the link between the two. The taking of the knee is a powerful anti-racist act and this England team have shown leadership across Europe in taking it for so long."Powerful actions are needed right now, to deal with the issues that are being played out as we speak."In October 2023, the Online Safety Act became law dictating that social media platforms have a duty to protect users from content such as racism, death threats and calls for says it is now time for Ofcom to take action."The racial abuse of Jess Carter highlights again how toxic some social media users are," he said. "It also raises the question of the responsibility of the platforms to identify and remove harmful abuse such as racism."In this regard it is a very timely test for the Online Safety Act which seeks to protect users and regulate social media platforms."The act came into force in the autumn and Ofcom gained powers to enforce in March. There doesn't seem to be any public information available on action taken against the platforms thus far." Lionesses have made 'powerful' decision Meanwhile, Shaista Aziz, co-director of The Three Hijabis - an anti-racism campaign set up in response to racism against players in the men's Euros final in 2021 - said the Lionesses' decision was "powerful"."Taking the knee is a symbolic anti-racism act that was developed in the US and it has a very long legacy with the civil rights movement and everything else," Aziz told BBC Radio 5 Live."I think what the Lionesses are doing now is taking this to another level where they are saying that the symbolism has been hijacked by those who want to sow further division and keep going on about so-called 'woke' culture in relation to the knee being taken by footballers. They are taking it back and claiming the symbolism back by saying that it is not working. "This is what the Lionesses have said and I think that is also really powerful." 'Social media companies must do more' UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "There is no place for racism in football or anywhere in society."I stand with Jess, the Lionesses, and any players who have suffered racism, on and off the pitch."Last month, the PM told the BBC the government will explore whether further protective measures can be put in place on social media Bhandari, chairman of anti-discrimination group Kick It Out, told Sky News "the social media companies need to do far more"."They've actually gone backwards over the last four or five years, not forwards. It's got worse on social media, not better," he said."And they need to provide us with the tools to help keep us safe and to remove some of this toxicity from the platforms.
