Port Of L.A. To Get First Electric Tug Via Diesel Conversion

Forbes17-04-2025
Diesel tug boat being converted to an electric vessel by Arc Boat Company and Divisified Marine Inc. ... More at the Port of Los Angeles.
A diesel-powered tug boat chugging as it guides ships in the Port of Los Angeles will soon be doing its duties with an emission-free electric motor after a dramatic makeover, making it the first electric tug in the nation's busiest port.
Together with shipbuilder Diversified Marine Inc., L.A.-startup Arc Boat Company is converting a 26-foot diesel-tug into a battery-powered electric vessel, as the Port of L.A. seeks to be zero-emission by 2030.
Primarily a builder of recreational electric boats, the tug conversion marks Arc's first foray into commercial marine, but likely, not the last.
'It's too early to speak to our specific roadmap, but I acknowledge that there's interest in going electric across a variety of commercial vessels,' said Arc co-founder and CEO Mitch Lee, in an interview. 'You already see interest in electric ferries, for example, and our goal is to help modernize the entire industry.'
Indeed, the electric boat industry has grown over the past few years including industry leaders Navier, Forza X1 Inc. and Candela Technology AB.
Last year Navier launched shuttle service for employees of financial infrastructure platform company Stripe in the San Francisco Bay Area using its electric hydrofoil vessels.
Tech startup Navier is launching a hydrofoil transit program with financial platform company Stripe ... More in the San Francisco Bay Area to transport Stripe employees from Marin County to company headquarters in South San Francisco.
Arc currently produces two recreational electric boats, the Arc One and Arc Sport. The electric tug boat conversion now underway is designed to offer both the cost and performance advantage electric propulsion provides.
'50% of the operating costs being maintenance and fuel is what we're specifically targeting with a solution like this,' said Kofi Asante, vice president of business development at Arc.
'From a commercial operator perspective we're delivering a tug that is very familiar,' added Lee. 'It is staffed the way that you typically staff these things, except you get more torque, except that you don't have these diesel engines that are kind of generating a lot of fumes.'
In addition, while it might take a crew of five or six individuals to operate a diesel-powered tug, only one person is required to operate an electric tug and that person does not have to be a licensed captain, according to Asante.
Adding momentum to Arc's move into the commercial sector is the establishment of the White House Office of Shipbuilding, created by Pres. Donald Trump in an executive order signed on April 5.
The office is designed to stimulate the domestic shipbuilding and provides financial incentives to support the industry.
'We actually think that now, more than ever, is a really special time to be introducing innovative solutions that can get to market quickly, have great operating costs and then have high performance, because that's how you actually continue to kind of level the playing field on a global level, with commercial ship building,' said Asante. 'So we think that the new ship building White House department is going to be a catalyst for a lot of this.'
It will be a few more months until Arc's electric tug will be ready to begin guiding ships in the busy Port of Los Angeles, but it's a project with a sense of urgency, according to Frank Manning, president of Diversified Marine.
'As the backbone of port logistics, workboats are a crucial component to the shipping industry. It's time to bring them into the modern age,' said Manning, in a statement. 'With a partner like Arc, we will now be able to set the bar for the future of American ports, and truly show the benefits of what clean maritime technology can achieve.'
It all starts with this first electric tug, said Arc's Lee, who sees the company's commercial growth floating far beyond the Port of L.A.
'We're starting with workloads, and we have big aspirations here,' said Lee. 'We think that's critical infrastructure, critical capabilities for the U.S., but our aspirations are certainly larger than that.'

Will Stripe SPAC or IPO in 2025?

Key Points Webull, Chime, and Circle Internet Group are some popular fintech companies that went public during the past year. In addition, SoFi Technologies and Robinhood Markets have emerged as leading fintech stocks over incumbents such as Block or PayPal. Although Stripe is a highly coveted private company, investors are curious if the company will become the next hot fintech IPO. 10 stocks we like better than SoFi Technologies › During the past several years, a number of technology-driven companies have burst onto the scene in search of disrupting the financial services industry. Amid a flurry of public offerings from the likes of Webull, Chime, Circle Internet Group, Robinhood Markets, and SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ: SOFI), financial services unicorn Stripe has remained a private company. But with a reported valuation of $91.5 billion, Stripe exceeds the market capitalizations of incumbent fintech businesses such as PayPal and Block by a considerable margin. Let's dig into the paths that competing fintech companies took to public exchanges in recent years. From there, I'll outline some factors that may weigh on Stripe's decision to pursue a public offering in the near future. How do companies go public? During a traditional initial public offering (IPO) process, a company will engage a number of investment banking firms such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, or JPMorgan Chase to assist with the underwriting process. Banks put together detailed documentation covering the company's historical financial profile, key performance indicators (KPIs), and risk factors around the business. This information is packaged in a regulatory filing known as an S-1 made with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). From there, banks and executives conduct a roadshow during which they market and pitch the IPO offering to institutional investors and wealth management firms. This process helps gauge investor interest and how the offering should be priced. Another way to list on the public exchanges is through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). SPACs are colloquially referred to as "blank check companies" on Wall Street. Essentially, a sponsor will take a shell company public to raise capital. From there, the goal is to use those funds to merge with a private company and take it public . SPACs can be attractive for businesses as they typically offer a faster route to going public compared to traditional underwriting protocols led by investment banks. For investors, SPAC mergers may be more accessible than traditional IPO companies -- where allocations are generally first reserved for institutional investors. How have fintech offerings fared in recent years? Although SPACs may sound appealing as they can provide investors with access to popular start-ups in hot industries more easily than a traditional IPO, there are some important points to consider about these companies. According to a SPAC study conducted at the University of Florida, one-year de-SPAC (the transition period after a merger announcement) returns averaged negative 46.3% between 2012 and 2022. The average three-year return was even worse, posting a return of negative 57.7%. When it comes to industry-specific metrics, the median de-SPAC returns between 2009 and 2025 for crypto companies was negative 66% while broader financial services companies returned negative 6%. No matter which way you cut it, SPACs in the fintech realm have been largely underwhelming. By contrast, since Robinhood went public back in 2021 using the traditional IPO process, the shares have surged by 192% -- handily topping the 48% return from the S&P 500. Both Circle and Chime completed IPOs about a month ago and have posted mixed returns so far. While Circle stock went to the moon initially, it has since pulled back considerably (yet still trades much higher than its IPO price). Chime's action has been relatively muted, likely due to investors realizing that competing neobank SoFi is much larger and more profitable -- calling into question Chime's growth prospects. Should Stripe go public in 2025? Overall, I think the results have largely been mixed for public offerings in the fintech sector in recent years. I think a big reason for this performance is that despite impressive growth and differentiated product offerings, questions remain over how neobanks and new brokerage platforms can really compete and disrupt industry incumbents. In addition, I think Stripe is likely weighing how macro factors such as potential changes to Federal Reserve monetary policy could affect its own business results, sentiment across the broader capital markets, valuations, and appetites for public offerings. Whether Stripe should go public really hinges on the company's needs and whether it makes sense from a strategic and operational perspective. Should you buy stock in SoFi Technologies right now? Altius Completes Sale of 2/3 of its Silicon Gold 1.5% NSR to Franco-Nevada

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland and Labrador--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Altius Minerals Corporation (TSX: ALS) (OTCQX: ATUSF) Altius Minerals Corporation ('Altius') is pleased to announce that Altius Royalty Corporation ('ARC'), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Altius, has completed the sale of a 1% NSR royalty covering the Silicon and Merlin gold deposit discoveries in Nevada ('1% NSR Silicon Royalty') to a wholly owned subsidiary of Franco-Nevada Corporation ('Franco-Nevada') (TSX & NYSE: FNV) ('The Transaction'), pursuant to a royalty purchase agreement entered into by ARC and Franco-Nevada (the 'Agreement'). ARC will continue to hold a remaining 0.5% NSR royalty interest in Silicon (recently renamed to the Arthur Gold Project by AngloGold Ashanti plc ('AGA') as a long-term component of its diversified portfolio. The purchase price for the 1% NSR Silicon Royalty interest is US$ 275 million (~ C$ 375 million) comprised of US$ 250 million in upfront cash paid at closing and a further payment of US $25 million in cash payable upon the conclusion of an ongoing arbitration process that confirms the area subject to the royalty under final award to be consistent with Altius's interpretation of the partial award of the arbitration tribunal that was issued and reported on earlier this year. The Board of Directors of Altius has received a fairness opinion from Cormark Securities Inc. which opinion concluded that, based upon and subject to the assumptions made, procedures followed, matters considered, limitations and qualifications set out therein, the consideration to be received by ARC pursuant to the Transaction is fair, from a financial point of view, to ARC. Brian Dalton, CEO of Altius commented, 'We are pleased to partner with Franco-Nevada on this royalty, which encompasses AGA's world-class Silicon and Merlin gold deposit discoveries in Nevada, as well as extensive areas of prospective surrounding land. The Transaction crystallizes significant value for shareholders while further demonstrating the ability of Altius's Project Generation business to amplify the return profile of its overall royalty investment portfolio. The decision to retain a third of our Silicon royalty interest also provides continuing growth exposure to this emerging gold district, while confirming the addition of precious metals as a long-term, well-balanced component of our shareholder's diversified royalty portfolio. We now look forward to the ability to explore a wider set of capital allocation and deployment opportunities, facilitated by a considerably strengthened balance sheet and liquidity profile, and to further growing shareholder value.' Anticipated Benefits to Altius Shareholders Capital Allocation Opportunities Cash, after taxes and fees, expected to increase to more than C$ 360 million (assumes up front and further payment proceeds from this Transaction and also from the recent acquisition of Orogen Royalties Inc. by Triple Flag Precious Metals Corp.) Total liquidity increased to more than C$ 540 million (including C$ 116 million available under a revolving credit facility and C$ 62.5 million potentially available under an accordion feature) Creates enhanced flexibility to evaluate external M&A opportunities while limiting equity level dilution of existing assets and the embedded growth potential of our portfolio Improves ability to opportunistically increase per share exposure to existing royalty interests through share repurchases Retained Royalty Exposure Continuing optionality exposure to gold resource growth 1 from current ~16 Moz resource estimate at the Arthur Gold Project, as AGA continues aggressive exploration and delineation drilling programs and the reporting of encouraging results Achieves rebalance of commodity exposures while confirming precious metals and another tier-1 quality royalty as components of Altius's long-term, diversified portfolio. These macro-trends each hold the potential to cause higher demand for many of Altius's commodity exposures including potash, high purity iron ore, renewable energy, base metals, and gold . In addition, Altius runs a successful Project Generation business that originates mineral projects for sale to developers in exchange for royalties and that has a demonstrated track record of driving outsized direct returns from its overall royalty investment portfolio. PNC, Coinbase team up on crypto-as-a-service

This story was originally published on Banking Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Banking Dive newsletter. PNC customers will soon be able to buy, sell and hold cryptocurrency through the bank's new partnership with Coinbase. 'Partnering with Coinbase accelerates our ability to bring innovative, crypto financial solutions to our clients,' said PNC CEO Bill Demchak in a prepared statement Tuesday. 'We will also provide PNC's best-in-class banking services to Coinbase,' he said. 'This collaboration enables us to meet growing demand for secure and streamlined access to digital assets on PNC's trusted platform.' Coinbase is the nation's largest cryptocurrency exchange. As of February, it held nearly half a trillion dollars in assets, which would make it akin to the 21st-largest bank in the country, according to CEO Brian Armstrong. 'If you think of us more like a brokerage, we'd be the 8th largest brokerage today by AUM,' he wrote on social media platform X. Coinbase will support PNC's entry into the digital asset market with its crypto-as-a-service platform, 'which provides PNC with a powerful set of tools to develop a scalable, high-growth business, built on a foundation of uncompromising security,' said Brett Tejpaul, head of Coinbase Institutional, in a prepared statement Tuesday. The distance between the crypto realm and traditional finance has been closing in 2025 due to relaxed regulatory oversight and a push for federal crypto legislation. The GENIUS Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump on Friday, creates a regulatory framework for stablecoins. Meanwhile, the CLARITY Act, which would divide regulatory oversight between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and Securities and Exchange Commission and create a framework for digital assets, is moving through the legislature. Several crypto-bank partnerships have been inked in recent months. BNY said last week that it would custody the reserves of Ripple's new stablecoin, Ripple USD, weeks after striking a similar partnership with Societe Generale regarding its CoinVertible USD. Digital native bank Green Dot announced a partnership with in May, offering banking and money management tools to the crypto exchange's U.S. customers through Arc, the bank's embedded finance platform. SoFi CEO Anthony Noto also said in May that his firm would re-enter the crypto business, which it exited in 2023, in the next six months. Brad Rustin, chair of law firm Nelson Mullins' financial services regulatory practice in Greenville, South Carolina, told Banking Dive in May that 'lots and lots and lots of banks' are talking about getting in on crypto amidst the Trump administration's regulatory shifts. The interest is largely coming from two verticals, Rustin said: fintech-forward banks that have long had an understanding of crypto assets, and large banks that have sizable securities custodial programs. '[The latter] are banks that did securities lending, that did margin lending, that did traditional custody services for stocks and bonds,' Rustin said. 'They're saying, 'Well, look, this is no different than custodying a stock or a bond. It's just how you actually control it and how you maintain it that's different.''
