Cheap imports, aimless programmes hurting farmers

The right help: With proper policies, incentives and technological help, local farmers will be able to produce bountiful crops to match major food producers like China, Japan and India, say agriculture and food security experts.
PETALING JAYA: Vegetable farmers and livestock breeders say that cheap imports and unfocused programmes are why their industries are 'in a crisis' despite all the attention given to agriculture for the past two decades.
Local growers are unable to compete with cheap vegetables brought in from China, Vietnam and Thailand, which is why some farms are leaving their crops to rot instead of harvesting them.
Cattle breeders say that government programmes encouraging farmers to breed cows for meat have failed to produce more beef for local consumption because the initiatives did not go to the right people.
'I do not know if our vegetable farmers can survive for the next two years because cheap imports are driving the prices down and we cannot compete,' said Cameron Highlands Malay Farmers Association chairman Datuk Syed Abd Rahman Syed Abd Rashid.
For instance, with the cost of producing cabbages being 80sen, farmers have to sell their produce at more than RM1 per kilo in order to make a profit, he said.
'But cabbages from China are sold in supermarkets at 60sen per kilo. So, how can we compete with these prices?
'Wholesalers and importers are bringing in tonnes of these vegetables every day, so how is our local produce going to compete?' he asked.
The vegetable glut in the market is currently nearly all year-round, added Syed Abd Rahman, making it hard for farmers to earn an income.
'In the last two years, I have not made a profit at all from growing vegetables. This is something I am sure farmers all over the country have experienced. Our industry is in a crisis,' he noted.
The Statistics Department's (DOSM) Agriculture Census 2024 showed that Malaysia continued to depend on imports to meet local demand for beef, mutton and milk. In 2024, 84%, 89.% and 56.6% of these items, respectively, were from other countries.
Cattle breeder Jamal Abdul Karim said that according to DOSM's past data, the country had higher levels of self-sufficiency for beef in the years before the Covid-19 pandemic, but this has declined and the nation has increased its imports.
'In my own experience, when we were sourcing cattle for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidiladha, we could not find enough animals in Peninsular Malaysia. We had to source from Thailand', said Jamal, who is the chief executive officer of Colla Niaga Sdn Bhd.
Despite seeing years of government programmes to encourage the growth of local breeders, Jamal said the results have been lacklustre because the initiatives lack focus.
'The problem is that we don't choose the right people who want to be breeders. For instance, we give out cows to oil palm planters so they can breed them in their plantations.
'But the problem is these people are focused on oil palm and not cattle-breeding. To make the industry viable, we need the government to work with the right breeders,' Jamal added.

PARIS: The signing of an agreement between AirAsia and Airbus for the purchase of A321XLR aircraft will further strengthen the airline's operational capabilities for short- and medium-haul routes, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Speaking after witnessing the signing ceremony here on Friday, Anwar said the acquisition will not only enable the airline to expand its network but also support Malaysia's aspiration to emerge as a leading aviation hub in Asia. AirAsia is buying US$12.25 billion (RM51.72 billion) worth of long-range Airbus 321XLR aircraft, with deliveries confirmed by 2028. The low-cost carrier inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Airbus in Paris today for 50 A321XLRs with conversion rights for another 20 A321XLRs, the new fleet of which are targeted to serve Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe, among others. The prime minister also witnessed the MoU exchange between 3P Capital Advisers and Ardian, a leading private investment firm from France, for the exploration of investment opportunities in the private markets. The private sector initiative can give Malaysians a wider access to alternative investments, Anwar said. Meanwhile, during his meeting with Imerys, an industrial mineral processing company that has been operating in Malaysia for over 25 years, Anwar said the company expressed its commitment to expand operations and support the development of a high-value, environmentally-friendly manufacturing sector in the country. In addition, Anwar held a meeting with the management of Arkema, a global leader in specialty chemicals, which is evaluating potential new investments in Malaysia. He said the company can potentially create more high-skilled jobs, expedite technology transfer, and enhance Malaysia's position as a major bioeconomy hub in the Asian region. Also present were Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. Phoong KOTA KINABALU (July 4): Sabah's economy remains stable and continues to experience positive growth momentum, according to a recent statement by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), said Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe. Quoting DOSM's 4 July 2025 release titled 'Sabah's trade remained resilient, exceeding RM100 billion for three consecutive years despite challenges in the economic landscape,' Phoong said the report confirms that Sabah's total trade for 2024 was valued at RM107.8 billion, representing a 2.7% growth compared to 2023. 'This reassures us that Sabah's trade performance remains robust, directly contradicting earlier claims of a steep decline,' he said. Phoong explained that he had previously sought clarification from DOSM regarding an unusually high figure in 2023, when Sabah's total trade was reportedly RM158 billion, followed by a significant drop to RM43 billion in 2024 based on international trade data. He said the DOSM clarification provides a more accurate understanding: 'If you look at the trend from 2019 to 2022, Sabah's trade consistently ranged between RM36 billion and RM58 billion. Then in 2023, it suddenly jumped to RM158 billion, raising questions.' Phoong welcomed DOSM's explanation, which clarified that Sabah's total trade — including transactions with Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak — reached RM107.78 billion in 2024, compared to RM105 billion in 2023. These figures represent all physical transactions passing through Sabah's entry and exit points. Meanwhile, international trade (based on country of origin and destination) stood at RM43 billion in 2024, aligning with DOSM's earlier figures released on 16 June. 'As for the confusion surrounding the 2023 figures, I appreciate DOSM's clarification that international trade for that year was actually RM41.4 billion, with exports at RM31 billion — not RM158 billion as previously cited.' He added that this confirms Sabah's trade has grown year-on-year, both in total and international terms, and that claims of a sharp decline in 2024 are inaccurate. 'Nevertheless, I regret the confusion caused by inconsistent data previously announced,' Phoong said. He also highlighted that DOSM reported a 9.3% increase in Sabah's manufactured goods exports, reaching RM12.0 billion — a highly encouraging indicator for the state's industrial sector. Additional trade statistics shared by Phoong include: Exports in 2024: RM61.3 billion Imports in 2024: RM46.4 billion (up 10.2%) Trade surplus: RM14.9 billion (a 27.9% decrease from the previous year)
