Men sought after armed robbers in disguise raid Middelburg filling station

The Citizen16-06-2025
A large group of armed robbers dressed as petrol attendants robbed the Doornkop Sasol Filling Station in a hold-up and made off with two vehicles.
Middelburg Observer reports that, according to Mid Alarms operational manager Johan Oberholzer, an undetermined number of suspects descended on Sasol Doornkop yesterday at 01:30, where they held up staff members inside the convenience store.
A reaction officer from Mid Alarms arrived at the Sasol, and during his initial scan of the scene, petrol attendants were walking around outside, and everything seemed normal.
As the reaction officer approached one petrol attendant to ask whether everything was well, the disguised robber pointed a firearm at him and forced him into the shop, where he was held up with the rest of the hostages.
'The officer could not raise an alarm, and two of the suspects left with his reaction vehicle,' Oberholzer explained.
A second reaction officer also responded minutes later. 'The second reaction officer was also held at gunpoint and taken inside.'
According to Oberholzer, the armed robbers then stole cigarettes and other items from the convenience store before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Once the robbers were gone, the SAPS was dispatched.
'The SAPS responded quickly, and our reaction officers successfully managed to recover our stolen vehicle. A Volkswagen GTI was also stolen, but was recovered by the police later that day at a school in Doornkop.'
While another publication reported that two people were shot, Oberholzer refutes those reports, adding that no one was shot or injured during the robbery.
'We have very clear imagery of the two suspects in our reaction vehicle, and we appeal to anyone with information on the suspects to please come forward,' Oberholzer urged.
Although the number of suspects is unknown, Oberholzer said it was a large group of between six and nine suspects.
Anyone with information that could assist in the suspects' arrest is asked to call 082 802 6399.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed they are looking for the two people in the photo to assist them in their investigation. If anyone knows their whereabouts, they can contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Osia Banze, on 079 420 0535.

SA-registered truck involved in deadly Zimbabwe crash that killed 17

At least 17 people died on Tuesday after a South African-registered haulage truck collided with a commuter omnibus in Zimbabwe. The incident occurred near Manyame River Bridge on the road linking Harare and Chitungwiza. ZimLive reports that the South Africa-registered truck was travelling to Harare while the commuter omnibus was headed for St Mary's in Chitungwiza. According to witnesses, the truck veered into oncoming traffic as it tried to avoid hitting a Honda Fit in its lane. Moments later, the South African-registered truck crashed into the commuter omnibus, crushing it under its weight. Zimbabwe national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed that all 17 victims, including some pedestrians, died at the scene of the crash. 'The ZRP confirms a road traffic accident which occurred this morning (on Tuesday) along Chitungwiza Road involving a haulage truck and a kombi,' Nyathi said in a statement. 'The police urge the media and public to be patient as police officers are currently attending the scene. More details will be released in due course.' Mpho Mafole's murder: 40-year-old suspect in court for killing Ekurhuleni auditor

City of Ekurhuleni's group divisional head of corporate and forensic audits, Mpho Mafole, 47, died last month in a hail of bullets, in what appears to be an execution. Image: Facebook A 40-year-old man is scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court in connection with the murder of Mpho Mafole, the group divisional head for corporate and forensic audits at the City of Ekurhuleni. IOL previously reported that Mafole, 47, was found in a pool of blood after his vehicle was sprayed with bullets on the R23 in Kempton Park on June 30. At the time, sources insisted Mafole's death was a hit, linked to his investigation into a massive R2 billion electricity scandal he was close to uncovering. On Tuesday, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the provincial serious and violent crime detectives had arrested a 40-year-old man. 'On (Sunday) 20 July 2025, the team arrested a 40-year-old man who is expected to appear before Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on 23 July 2025,' she said. Detectives are also looking for a second suspect, identified as Hlanganani Agripper Mncwango, after a warrant of arrest was issued for him by the court. Video Player is loading. Earlier this month, IOL reported that Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza described the brutally murdered Mafole as a dedicated public servant, a fearless champion for accountability, and a staunch advocate for ethical governance. Police in Gauteng are investigating the motive behind the murder, but activists and social media users suggest the cold-blooded murder could have been an assassination meant to silence him, linked to his work for the City of Ekurhuleni.
