The 2025 Tour de France began with a bang on Saturday as Jasper Philipsen emerged from the chaos to win stage 1 and claim the yellow jersey in Lille. It was a wild day, with tension in the peloton ratcheted up by the combination of hectic road furniture in the towns of Normandy and furious crosswinds which swept over open farmland, disrupting the race on its route back to the city. Advertisement Several riders hit the deck on the most congested urban roads, most notably Ineos's time-trial king Filippo Ganna, who suffered a suspected concussion and abandoned the race. Then came the winds which Visma-Lease a Bike used to attack, shattering the peloton and costing Jonas Vingegaard's podium rivals Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic 39 seconds on the leaders. Unfortunately for Visma, race favourite Tadej Pogacar was wise to the move and finished with the reduced bunch at the front. Alpecin-Deceuninck's perfect lead-out train delivered Philipsen to the home straight and the Belgian sprinter did the rest. Jasper Philipsen celebrates after clinching victory on stage 1 (AFP via Getty Images) If riders were hoping for a relaxing stage 2 to recuperate then they may be disappointed: today's stage is the longest of the entire Tour, 209km from the small village of Lauwin-Planque to Boulogne-sur-Mer on the northern coast of France. There are four categorised climbs, the latter three condensed into the final 30km, as well as plenty more uncategorised bumps and rises in a leg-sapping finish. The climbs are short - none over 1.1km - but the cat-three Cote du Haut Pichot averages 10.6%, and takes place inside the final 10km, which could be enough to distance the fast men and narrow the field down to a reduced sprint. An enterprising late breakaway could be in with a chance at glory too, with the finish line itself is at the top of an uphill drag. Advertisement Crosswinds are again likely to be a factor here, particularly towards the end of the stage when the road turns north and runs parallel with the Pas-de-Calais coast. The yellow jersey is expected to change hands in Boulogne-sur-Mer, with Philipsen having his work cut out to keep pace with the puncheurs and breakaway artists in the pack. But then Philipsen is no slouch over hills, and he will have a determined Alpecin-Deceuninck squad in support, so there really is any number of possible outcomes. Unfortunately for the peloton, it promises to be another fascinating day at the Tour de France. It's expected to finish at 5.20pm local time (4.20pm BST). Advertisement Prediction Stage two looks tailor-made for the puncheurs of the peloton, or even its more versatile sprinters. Expect the real fast men to be distanced but Jasper Philipsen has got more in the tank to get over climbs than most. Yet this stage has got the name of his teammate, punchy Dutchman and lead-out supremo, Mathieu van der Poel, all over it.

Ponce has two late goals to deliver the Dynamos a 4-3 win over leading San Diego FC
Associated Press SAN DIEGO (AP) — Ezequiel Ponce scored his second goal 10 minutes into extra time and the Houston Dynamo defeated San Diego FC 4-3 on Saturday night. Ethan Barlow gave Ponce a short middle feed to the top of the box and he used his left foot to deliver a roller to the far corner for the win, just the second home loss of the season for San Diego. Ponce tied the game from the spot in the 87th and then 17 minutes were added at the end of regulation. Anders Dreyer's shot deflected off the leg of teammate Onni Valakari in the 67th minute to give Western Conference leading San Diego a 3-2 lead. Just four minutes later an offside call negated Ponce's tying goal but Ponce got a second chance on the penalty. Milan Iloski of Houston (7-9-5) opened the scoring 25 minutes in and Luca Bombino pulled the Dynamo into a 2-2 tie in the 54th minute. San Diego (12-6-3), which had won four straight, took a 2-1 lead into halftime on goals by Lawrence Ennali and Franco Escobar. Valakari had assists on both goals. Chris Richards says US team ready to fight in Gold Cup final against Mexico
Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) — Chris Richards has noticed a turnaround in the U.S. team during the CONCACAF Gold Cup, a change from both the end of coach Gregg Berhalter's tenure and the start of Mauricio Pochettino's. 'We kind of like to fight, so I think that's something that maybe has been missing from the national team over the last few camps, few months, few years,' the defender said ahead of Sunday's final against Mexico. 'We didn't come into camp saying that we want to fight, but I think if teams want to bring it to us, then they have something else coming for them. Of course, we want to win games, but sometimes in CONCACAF it's not pretty, so you have to do the dirty things.' Mexico is the defending champion and has nine titles to seven for the U.S. and one for Canada. A pro-Mexico crowd is expected at NRG Stadium. Richards said the Americans have bonded during their month together, causing players to defend each other when opponents challenge them. 'We love each other as if we're a big family, and if you have siblings you know that if anybody messes with your sibling, well, I guess for lack of a better word, you kind of have to kill them," he said Saturday. 'You're allowed to do whatever to your siblings, but nobody from the outside can.' Missing many of its regular starters because of injuries, vacation and the Club World Cup, the No. 16 U.S managed five wins over relatively weak opponents and reached its first Gold Cup final since 2021. The meeting with 17th-ranked Mexico will be the last competitive match for both nations before they co-host next year's World Cup along with Canada. 'I think the team is going to be ready not only to fight on the pitch against players from Mexico with the difficult atmosphere on the stadium, on the crowd, but I think it's good for us,' said Pochettino, who admired the energy-filled semifinal crowd in St. Louis that was 90% pro-Guatemala. 'It's good because I think it's going to be maybe the last game that we are going to play under pressure, and to play under pressure is what we need.' The U.S. advanced with victories over teams ranked No. 100 (Trinidad and Tobago), 58 (Saudi Arabia), 83, (Haiti), 54, (Costa Rica) and 106 (Guatemala), winning three times by one goal and once on penalty kicks. The only dominant performance was an opening 5-0 rout of T&T. The Americans entered the Gold Cup with a four-game losing streak, their longest since 2007. Defender Tim Ream, at 37 the oldest player on the roster, said it took time for them to adjust to Pochettino and his assistants. 'This is a different atmosphere now,' he said. 'This is different set of coaches, different ideas, different standards, different values, different everything. And it was a learning process, for sure.' Pochettino is a former coach of Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain, where he guided Lionel Messi. 'From the outside looking in, they can be a little bit intimidating,' Richards said. 'But then once you finally get to meet them, you understand that they're all just big teddy bears and they all really care about family.' Matt Freese has emerged during the Gold Cup to supplant Matt Turner for now as the starting goalkeeper. 'I think we've proved that we can play against some bigger opponents. I think we've proved that we surprise people,' he said. 'We haven't proved what we want to prove yet, and so the job is not finished.'
