Space oddities take centre stage
Local artist Hangno Hartono sitting near an alien figure during the Indonesia UFO Festival in Yogyakarta.— AP A metallic spacecraft glistens under ambient light as two figures with elongated limbs, bulbous heads and featureless faces gaze with black eyes into the distance of the island of Java. The extraterrestrial arrival in Indonesia is one of the science fiction scenes that has captivated groups of outer space enthusiasts at the country's UFO Festival throughout July. Since 2016, organisers have welcomed hundreds of fans of outer space realities and mysteries from Indonesia and beyond. The festival aims to be a creative and intellectual crossroads for enthusiasts of space science and exploration, Unidentified Flying Objects, Unidentified Aerial Phenomena and SETI, short for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. This year's free event included an Alien Village, UFO Village and UFO Camp at a site near Yogyakarta, about 420km from the Indonesian capital Jakarta. Visitors admired a replica of a Mars exploration module and galleries with artistic interpretations of outer space, while workshops for adults and students offered cosmic activities such as spacesuit construction. Venzha Christ, director of the Indonesia Space Science Society, said a focus on the term UFO allows participants to wonder without boundaries. 'I think the Indonesian generation needs a platform that can transform and socialise creative ideas, whether from the perspective of technology, science or even art,' Christ said. 'Imagining outer space, imagining the universe, is imagining limitlessness.' — AP

A treat for Nusantara music fans - Indonesian star Pamungkas and local boys Fugo join in the fun for Panggung Purnama concert on Sept 28
It is going to be one unforgettable night for Nusantara music fans - Indonesian star Pamungkas and local boys Fugo have confirmed their participation for the Panggung Purnama concert at Zepp Kuala Lumpur on Sept 28. And the two new acts will join the already confirmed top Indonesian singer Bilal Ahmad Indrajaya for the exciting fiesta. The concert promises to be a clash of flavours, sounds, and South-East Asian cultures, bringing together selected artistes who have the power of art and stories that pierce the soul for the special night. The music festival organised by UdaraLaskhar said in a media statement that it will be a festival like none other for music fans in Malaysia and also the South-East Asia region. "This will be a very special night for music fans. We have three top-class acts and they will surely entertain the fans as seen in any other music festival," said John Labu, the representative of UdaraLaskhar. "And to open the curtain on the first phase, who else would be more deserving than Bilal Ahmad - an alternative music icon full of mystery, yet so close to regional fans. And to make it all so perfect, now Pamungkas and Fugo have also joined the party." Taking a look at the acts for the festival, the talented Bilal Ahmad Indrajaya (full name) is an Indonesian singer-songwriter from South Tangerang. Bilal began his professional music career by releasing a song titled "Biar" in 2018. He was nominated for the Best Alternative Collaboration at the 2021 Indonesian Music Awards with Reality Club for the song "I Wish I Was Your Joke" and has also released a mini album titled Purnama in 2019. His appearances at festivals such as the BNI Java Jazz Festival 2024 and collaborations with Malaysian artists such as Malaysian Noh Salleh in "Niscaya" prove that Bilal is not only respected in his country but also has a special place in the hearts of Malaysian fans. As for Rizki Rahmahadian Pamungkas, better known by his stage name Pamungkas, is an Indonesian all-in-one talent - a singer, record producer, songwriter, and actor. Pamungkas' introduction to music began at the age of 8, when he took drum lessons at the prompting of his mother, who had hoped that his hearing might improve in his left ear, which is half deaf. And there has been no stopping this amazing Indonesian talent since then. Pamungkas joined a band called Potenzio in 2009, and they released an album titled "Jingga. Pamungkas released his debut solo album, "Walk the Talk", in 2018 to popular acclaim. The album was, in fact, first released in 2017 with 10 songs, but re-released in 2018 with six more songs and a new cover. Most of the songs are written in English, but three are in Indonesian. Songs in the album, such as "Sorry", "One Only", and "Kenangan Manis" ("Sweet Memories"), received over 30 million streams. In April 2021, Pamungkas' song "To the Bone" from Flying Solo became the longest-running top song on Spotify's Indonesia Top 50 chart. The video for the song had received over 240 million views on YouTube by July 2022. Then in the same year, he announced his first tour outside Indonesia, starting with shows in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. On top of that, in January 2024, the talented Pamungkas announced that he had also joined a rock band, The Krankers, as their drummer. As for the Malaysian group Fugo, they are a fast-rising face in the Malaysian music scene. Fugo is a Malaysian alternative indie pop rock band formed in October 2019. Their music is a mixture of vintage electro vibes with a modern sound, drawing influences from late 70's, 80's pop, funk, modern rock, and new wave music. Fugo released their impressive self-titled EP in April 202,1, which included crowd-favorites 'Lagu Balada Kala Hujan' & their stellar collaboration with Bil Musa, 'Moon & The Sun'. In 2022, they hit the top limelight with the haunting single, 'As Long As We Stay', said to be among the best songs heard by fans that year. Last year, their album '99' garnered critical acclaim with the album-titled single '99' and the soulful 'Pentas Sandiwara'. "This concert is one where we are realizing the dreams and requests of fans through the debut of Pamungkas and Fugo joining Bilal Indrajaya at Panggung Purnama on Sept 28 at Zepp Kuala Lumpur," said John Labu. "We are confident that Pamungkas, Fugo, and Bilal Indrajaya will leave a lasting impression on all. We expect this concert to be an unforgettable experience for all Nusantara music lovers." Tickets for the concert are priced at: Bintang (RM179), Langit (RM199), Awan (RM249), Bumi (RM239) dan Purnama (RM399) and can be bought at

'It has been blessful and an amazing journey, ' says the ever-elegant Misha Omar as she celebrates her new single and concert
Celebrating her 23rd year in the music business, Misha Omar, dubbed as Malaysia's 'divine voice' says she is enjoying every minute of her long career and is once again topping the charts with her soulful new single "Break". After winning hearts in the region for more than two decades and at the age of 44, the ever-elegant Misha is hardly thinking of slowing down. Misha is back in the limelight as she continues to melt the hearts of music fans in South-East Asia with the soulful "Break", her new single, which is also the main soundtrack for Astro's "Mandul Bukan Pilihan" hit tv series. The song is brought to fans by Malaysia's top record producer, Sony Music Malaysia, and was officially launched to the masses on June 20. During a special listening party in KL on Thursday (July 31), Misha said she is just thankful that she has lasted this long and her journey to where she is now has been filled with tough but, yet many memorable moments. "You know, my life is a journey. An amazing journey. But all this time, I have been blessed with so many good things - family, friends, well-wishers, and most importantly, wonderful, wonderful fans. It has been a great joyride," said Misha after the listening party for her new single, 'Break'. 'Touching on the production of Break, as a singer, I have had the best cooperation with my vocal teacher, Datuk Syafinaz Selamat. 'As a singer, before starting a new project, I take vocal classes and 'dissect' the lyrics so that the appreciation and the whole feeling about Break can be conveyed well. Hopefully, Break can touch the soul and leave an impression on the hearts of fans,' said Misha. The stirring and emotional new single also marks her first-ever collaboration with Indonesian music legend Melly Goeslaw. With over two decades of musical excellence under her belt, the three-time Anugerah Juara Lagu Best Vocalist breathes life into "Break", a beautifully crafted composition by Melly Goeslaw, with musical arrangement by celebrated producer Tohpati. Though the title "Break" may suggest a pause, for Misha Omar, it symbolises the opposite — a bold reaffirmation of her commitment to creating timeless, quality music that resonates deeply with her audience. 'I've always dreamed of performing a song written by Melly,' Misha shares. 'So I leaped and messaged her directly on social media. To my delight, she responded - and "Break" was born, written specifically for me. "This collaboration is incredibly special and came at exactly the right moment in my journey.' . There was even a special surprise for Misha at the listening party on Thursday. Indonesian diva Melly made the trip to join Misha on stage during the listening party. "I'm just so touched today. For a superstar like Melly to join me on stage and make a trip just for the show. This has to be one of the greatest moments of my career," said Misha. "What a fantastic surprise. I thank Sony for this thoughtful move. This is a present I will not forget for a lifetime." Speaking about the production of "Break", Misha said she had approached Melly on social media via Direct Message (DM): "This project started when I just told myself to go ahead and approach Melly on DM. Melly was happy to do it and then "Break" was born. This is one song that will be in my heart forever. 'I've always dreamed of performing a song written by Melly. This collaboration is incredibly special and came at exactly the right moment in my journey.' As for Melly, she said she has been a big fan of Misha's work for many, many years. "I have been following her for such a long time. She simply has an amazing voice. I have always been in awe of Misha's song," said Melly. "So when she approached me for a collaboration, I just could not say no. It has been an honour to work with Misha. And I believe no one could have sung this song better than Misha," said Melly at the listening party. The listening party was also made much more special when both divas were on the stage at the same time, singing to the tune of the new single, much to the delight of the listeners who attended the event. "Break" is available for streaming and download since June 20 on all major platforms including Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube Music. It has an aptly named teaser for the new song -- Don't take a break — tune in to "Break" . On another note, Misha will also be staging her mega solo concert at the Mega Star Arena on November 29. This year's concert is brought to fans by music and art house producers Double M Production, together with Altus Prohouse as the managers for the "DiA Misha Omar" concert. Tickets have been on sale since July 25 at 10am. Tickets are priced at RM288 (SILVER), RM388 (GOLD), RM488 (PLATINUM), RM588 (DIAMOND), RM688 (VIP 2), RM1,200 (VIP 1), RM1,200 (2 PAX; ROYAL TWIN SEAT). Tickets can be purchased at
