Dog trainer breaks down in tears watching 'cruel' owner smack pooch and pin her to the ground - before issuing damning five-word verdict

Daily Mail15-06-2025
A dog trainer broke down in tears, watching a 'cruel' owner smack his pooch and pin her to the ground - before issuing a damning five-word verdict.
The shocking moment came on a resurfaced episode of It's Me Or The Dog, which sees trainer Victoria Stilwell help dog owners struggling with their pet's behaviour.
The show, first aired on Channel 4 in 2005 for three years before a Really reboot in 2021, was inspired by Supernanny, which offers similar help but with children.
This particular episode sees British-born Victoria head to assist American couple Joe and Mandy, who are having trouble keeping control of their dog Dakota.
An upsetting moment sees Joe strike the dog on her nose and hold her down after she will not stop chasing his broom as he sweeps his patio.
From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop.
Referring to his pet's behaviour, Joe explains to the camera: 'When Dakota is in the backyard, she kind of makes it miserable if I have to do yard work.'
Victoria asks how he would normally try to get the dog to stop - after which he grabs Dakota's collar and turns her on her side so she is lying on the floor, with him holding her down.
He says: 'Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.'
But the trainer is visibly distressed at his approach, putting her head in her hands: 'When you hold a dog down like that, people think that dog's calming down but actually, the dog's not calmed down at all.
'What they do is they shut down, they learn, instinct tells them they're being put in a compromised position so in order to survive, they shut down.'
She could not have been more right - as Joe soon slaps Dakota round the face, after she managed to wriggle free from his grasp and grab the broom in her mouth.
As the dog yelps in pain, Victoria winces, with her pre-recorded voiceover saying: 'When Joe gets angry, he slaps her and he doesn't just tap her.
'I heard the connection of his hand to the bone on her nose and it was hard.'
She delivers some hard truths to the violent pet owner: 'That's a pretty hard whack.
'It's not so much the hardness of the whack, it's the action of the whack that concerns me. That could actually backfire.
'God forbid one of the children goes to touch her and she just sees this hand coming towards her, thinks back to when she was hit and bang, goes for the hand.
'And I've seen it happen a lot.'
After Joe's violent display, it is clear Victoria has a lot of work to do - so she takes them to a dog training centre to introduce them to clicker training.
The approach has owners use a clicker every time their dog successfully responds to a command - making the animal associate the noise with a reward.
Joe's wife Mandy tries it with almost immediate success, with Dakota responding quickly to her attempts to make her sit and stay using the clicker.
But things are not so smooth when Joe tries it out - as the dog flinches even when he tries to reach out to give her a treat.
Victoria says: 'She flinched because she's used to you hitting her. When you do that, it just really does not build trust. You get angry when she doesn't respond to you.'
The trainer then delivers her damning five-word verdict on his behaviour: 'That's your fault, not hers.'
She explained this tough love approach to the couple elsewhere in the programme: 'I see this dog getting blamed for so much negative behaviour you could have prevented.
'It's very, very difficult, when you are correcting a dog, but you haven't actually taught the dog how to behave. So, it's really actually not the dog's fault.
'You brought this dog into your family, it is therefore your responsibility to train this dog to be able to succeed in your family.'
Her tough approach finally got Joe to face the truth: 'Dakota doesn't really trust me as well. It's mostly my fault.
'The relationship I've had with the dog is going to take some time to fix.'
Alongside the clicker training, Victoria also gets the couple to take Dakota to an agility centre.
She explained: 'When you give a dog a sport, not only is it getting rid of all that physical energy and the dog is thinking but also, it's creating a really good bond between you. It's teamwork.'
Dakota turned out to be a natural at it, flying around the course after the trainer encouraged Joe and Mandy to give her enthusiastic praise to motivate her.
Even Victoria was shocked by the dog's performance: 'That's amazing, that's quite advanced, that's impressive.
'When I came in that first day, there was no praise on this dog but now you're getting that connection and she's just really listening to you.'
Joe was a new man after it: 'It made me feel great to see Dakota do so well on the agility course. It would be fun to bring her down and do it together.'
And when Victoria returns to visit the family two weeks later, she is able to see all her hard work paying off.
At the start of the episode, things had been looking bad, with Joe saying: 'Has it put strain on our marriage? It's just an extra added stress we really don't need.
'We've only had her a year - I've tried to get rid of her twice already.
'I've gotten to the point with Dakota where I've posted her on the Internet while Mandy is at work, to see if I can get rid of her quickly.'
But his relationship with Dakota had completely transformed by the end of the episode.
Joe and Mandy are seen calmly clicker training their pooch, who is herself noticeably calmer, less agitated and better behaved than before.
Dakota is treated less as a problem and more as an active, loved member of the family, with praise lavished on her out on a walk with the kids.
Joe is even seen out cycling alone with Dakota, who runs happily alongside him: 'I think Mandy is definitely happy Dakota and I are starting to form a bond.
'I feel like she's become more of my buddy, she's actually becoming my dog now.'
Victoria was very happy with their efforts: 'I'm really impressed with the success they're having with Dakota.'

What Martha Stewart really thinks about Meghan Markle 'following in her footsteps' - as she questions Duchess' 'authenticity' but lavishes praise on Gwyneth Paltrow

Meghan Markle has been dubbed the 'new Martha Stewart ' after reinventing herself as a homemaker and influencer after leaving royal life. But Martha herself appears less convinced that the Duchess of Sussex could be her successor as the next Queen of Entertaining. 'I hope she knows what she's talking about', America's most trusted lifestyle expert has said, the Daily Mail can reveal today. Ms Stewart, 83, has been accused of taking a thinly-veiled swipe question Meghan's authenticity in a new interview about celebrities following in her footsteps. Meghan, 43, has launched her Netflix show With Love, Meghan and her As Ever brand this year, to mixed reviews. Ms Stewart said bluntly: 'Meghan, I don't really know very well. I hope she knows what she's talking about'. She added of the Duchess: 'Authenticity, to me, is everything, and to be authentic and knowledgeable about your subject matter is extremely important'. Gwyneth Paltrow and Meghan Markle shocked fans in March as they joined forces to shutdown ongoing speculation of 'feud' between them in a special Q&A where Meghan appeared in Paltrow's kitchen But Martha then lavished praise on Meghan and Harry's neighbour Gwyneth Paltrow, praising her 'very successful' career as an actress turned entrepreneur. Royal watchers claimed this was more shade thrown on the Duchess, with several claiming Ms Stewart was 'calling out' Meghan. Martha gushed in an interview with Yahoo Australia: 'Gwyneth has been very successful; she created quite an interesting body of businesses. She's admired. She won an Oscar for heaven's sake as an actress. She's pretty powerful.' Martha's comments emerged as Meghan Markle announced another product coming to her As Ever line. Gwyneth Paltrow and Meghan Markle joined forces in March an attempt to shut down rumours of a feud between them. The 52-year-old Oscar winner addressed the speculation during an Instagram Q&A after one of her 8.7million followers asked if she was 'comprehending the Meghan Markle beef that social media says you two have?' Paltrow, filming in the kitchen of her sprawling home in the Montecito, replied: 'I genuinely do not understand this at all, whatsoever.' She then turned her head to ask someone off screen: 'Do you understand this?' She quickly panned her iPhone camera to her right to reveal Montecito neighbour Meghan sitting beside her at the counter, who playfully shrugged her shoulders, giggled and leaned back in her chair while eating a piece of pie. The joint appearance comes amid comparisons between the Duchess of Sussex's new Netflix show With Love, Meghan and lifestyle brand As Ever and Paltrow's Goop empire - sparking rumours of a potential feud. Paltrow had posted a video of herself preparing breakfast which were similar to scenes from the Netflix series. She used the song used in adverts for Meghan's series, This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole. The actress turned wellness guru, who founded her wellness company in 2008, has defended the duchess setting up a lifestyle brand, saying 'everybody deserves an attempt at everything that they want to try'. Meghan, 43, launched her lifestyle brand earlier this year, releasing the first products in April, which included a range of teas, a raspberry spread, and a limited-edition wildflower honey with honeycomb, amongst other things. She followed it up with an apricot spread and another honey, and in July, she expanded into the world of alcohol when she dropped her own wine - the 2023 Napa Valley Rosé. Each release has been met with fierce excitement from her fans, and every product has sold out pretty quickly. Now, the Duchess of Sussex 's brand has announced another batch of her Napa Valley wine, made in 2024 unlike the last bottles, which were from 2023 'It marries the same harmony of notes from our first blend and creates an elegant medley of delicate yet memorable flavour,' reads a press release. 'You'll want to clink glasses with friends as the sun sets, toasting to a summer of joy. 'Barefoot or in sandals, dressed up or dressed down, this rosé may become your favorite accessory for alfresco lunches and dinners at dusk.' In the release, As Ever listed some of the positive feedback customers had given the company over its first rosé, which included comments like, '10 out of 10,' 'perfect,' and 'elevated flavour.' 'This affirmed all of the love, time and effort our team, and our founder, poured into curating this blend to evoke the sun drenched spirit of Napa Valley, and the breathtaking tenor of the California Coast,' As Ever added. 'Thank you for filling our cup. Now it's time for us to fill your glass! We are pleased to share that our 2024 Napa Valley Rosé will be available for purchase next week.' The brand also posted to Instagram with a series of images showing the new wine resting in beach sand. It was uploaded alongside a caption that read: 'Oh, how we love seeing the world through rose colored glasses. Rosé colored glasses? Perhaps even better. Our new vintage of As Ever's beloved rosé is available next week. 'Stay tuned for more details and timing.' As Ever's first wine went on sale on July 1 and sold out within the hour. Customers were able to purchase three bottles for $90, six bottles for $159, and 12 bottles for $300. But the Daily Mail's insider at Netflix, her business partner, has said that Meghan's rosé, which promises to 'capture the essence of sun-drenched outdoor moments ', has not been a huge success and this was another 'nail in the coffin' for the $100million broadcast deal. 'The wine isn't selling', they said, adding: 'There's no great demand whatsoever'. Last month, Daily Mail exclusively revealed that the alcoholic beverage is made by Fairwinds Estate, a California winery that creates bespoke wines for celebrities. The 2023 Napa Valley Rosé is described on the bottle as a 'delicately balanced rosé with soft notes of stone fruit, gentle minerality, and a lasting finish.' It has a 14.5 percent alcohol by volume for the 750ML bottle. The Daily Mail FEMAIL team tried the rosé and while the wine was smooth, we couldn't easily detect the notes of stone fruit. In fact, it tasted quite bland, and almost water-y. In addition, the rosé had some acidic notes, leaving a somewhat uncomfortable sensation at the back of our throats after swallowing. In the end, the verdict was the wine lacked flavour and tasted affordable and ordinary. It wasn't terrible - but it certainly wasn't great. We felt the rosé just didn't taste like you bought it at a fancy vineyard, where it's supposed to be made, but rather, like a wine you would be served at a work happy hour. The FEMAIL team also reviewed her initial set of products, and found that Meghan's raspberry spread was too thin, too sweet, and very runny. Her hibiscus tea was extremely bitter with heavy notes of floral, with one taste tester comparing it to 'drinking lip balm.' 'It tasted like dirty dishwater,' another FEMAIL writer shared. Some of us couldn't even bear to swallow it, as one person even spat it back into the cup.

Hulk Hogan's estranged daughter will get nothing from his will, after she removed herself following their rift

Hulk Hogan's daughter won't inherit a dime from her late father's estate after their rift towards the end of his life. The WWE legend died at the age of 71 last week after a cardiac arrest. Brooke Hogan revealed on Tuesday that she 'had to step away to protect my heart' in the final two years of his life. And not only did she remove herself from his everyday life, she also removed herself from his will. The 37-year-old, who is married to former NHL player Steven Oleksy, feared being caught up in a bitter financial battle in the wake of her father's death, according to TMZ. Brooke reportedly didn't trust anyone in Hogan's inner circle and asked to be removed as a beneficiary of his estate in 2023 - the same year as her final conversation with the wrestling icon. The television personality's priority had always been to protect her famous father from those she felt were taking advantage of his fame and fortune. Brooke reportedly attempted to address the issue with her father but after years of it falling on deaf ears and disagreeing with him over the matter, she contacted his financial manager and made the decision to be excluded from the will. While she is said to be disheartened that Hogan didn't trust her to have his best interests at heart, she has never been motivated by his fortune. Hogan's estate is estimated to be worth $25million, but it has not been revealed who will inherit his estate, trademarks, intellectual property, and other assets. Brooke will reportedly still receive some money from a small life insurance trust Hogan took out, and she apparently intends to put the sum towards her children's college funds. She welcomed twins - a boy and a girl - with her husband in January. However, the late wrestler never met his grandchildren before his death, despite efforts by her husband to reconcile the estranged father and daughter. Hulk welcomed Brooke as well as son Nick, 35, with ex-wife Linda - whom he was married to from 1983 to 2009. He later tied the knot with Jennifer McDaniel in 2010 until their divorce in 2021. Two years later, the WWE legend said 'I do' to Sky Daily and the pair were married up until his death on Thursday. Brooke and her father last spoke nearly two years ago in September 2023 only weeks before he married his third wife Sky. On that call, Brooke expressed love and concern for her father - telling him that he shouldn't be working so hard due to his declining health. Despite her pleas for him to enjoy more of his life, those requests fell on deaf ears. The pair didn't speak again. Despite multiple attempts from her husband to fix their relationship, including when Brooke almost died in childbirth, Hulk 'responded coldly and never made an effort to meet Brooke's kids,' per TMZ. Back in March, Linda accused her former husband of being a 'complete liar' and 'sex addict'. She also claimed their family is 'in the worst mess' after Brooke cut both parents out of her life. Brooke later retaliated, hitting back at her mom by alleging that her dad was not the only reason behind the shocking family divide, claiming she was 'verbally and mentally abused' during her childhood. After Brooke's stunning response, Linda then took a dramatic U-turn by defending Hogan and branding her daughter a 'narcissist.' Brooke broke her silence on the family feud on Tuesday in the wake of her father's death, claiming that she and Hogan 'never fought' but rather she felt the need to step away to protect her own emotions. 'He was telling me these things, being so vulnerable with me and heard my pleas, then suddenly something shifted, and he made a choice to walk the path that clearly tore at his spirit,' she wrote in a statement shared to Instagram. 'I felt a disconnect. What followed were respectful disagreements that took an emotional toll on me.' 'During the last two years, I had to step away to protect my heart. My husband stayed open, quietly reaching out to my dad without me knowing, trying to find a safe way back in for me. After my father passed, I read those messages, some answered, some ignored... but all of them broke my heart.' Even amid their estrangement, Brooke and her husband Steven found a touching way toR honor the wrestling icon. The couple included a sweet nod to Hogan in the name of one of their twins, it was revealed last week. Their daughter's full name is Molly Gene Oleksy - the same middle name as the late wrestler's. 'I know in my heart I did everything I could,' Brooke concluded. 'He knew I would run through a burning building for him. And in many ways, along the path of life, I did. He knows how deeply, how hard and how purely I loved him. I am at peace knowing this.' Oleksy, who had stints with NHL teams, the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins, married Brooke in 2022. He also broke his silence on Tuesday, sharing a photo of the trio alongside a statement that read: 'My wife and I have not released any official statement about the death of my father-in-law. 'We are grieving and processing privately and ask for the respect to do so. If you see or hear something it did not come from us. There are many disturbing AI videos circulating that do not represent our family, feelings, or opinions. Thank you very much for the love, support, and understanding.'
