Mudfish break drought with win
Running away with their first victory since 2023, Matakanui defeated Arrowtown 42-29 at Omakau on Saturday.
It was a big occasion for the Mudfish, who recognised captain Dean Sinnamon's 100th game at home — which he played the week before away against Alexandra — and Sinnamon scored two tries in the romp.
It was a big turnaround from their clash seven weeks ago when Arrowtown, who were also the last team Matakanui beat, ran away with a big 66-15 victory.
Alexandra made the trip to Cromwell and returned home with a 40-26 win against the Goats.
All the talk had been about Cromwell's vaunted scrum, which has been pushing teams around the park all season.
But Alexandra were up for the challenge, putting in an almighty heave at their set piece and shifted Cromwell off the ball.
All of a sudden Alexandra had two tries to show for it and were away.
Centre Tyler Ford dotted down twice in the opening two minutes and converted his team's five tries to finish with a haul of 20 points.
Cromwell scored two late tries through Peni Delai and Mitchell Condon to bring the scoreline back slightly.
Alexandra (30 points) now sit second, giving themselves a little breathing room between them and third place Wakatipu (22 points).
The Upper Clutha Rams, who are top of the table with 31 points, sealed a 28-14 victory against Maniototo to cap off their 12th jubilee celebrations.
There was a bumper turn out for the clash and celebrations and winger Ulysse Martineau scored twice for the Rams
The victory means the White Horse Trophy will stay with the Wanaka-based team.
Alexandra are home to Wakatipu this weekend, Arrowtown will host the Upper Clutha Rams and Maniototo will face Cromwell. — APL

'I will be presented with the proposed changes for approval later this year.' The current odds of winning Lotto Powerball are 1 in 38m. Should Lotto add one extra Powerball number, the odds would decrease to 1 in 42.2m. Every extra ball added would lower the odds. Lotto NZ wouldn't be drawn on how many extra balls it wants to add to the draw. Lotto NZ's new Statement of Performance Expectations for 2026 says game bosses aim to make the change at the start of the 2027 financial year - delayed from their original date of January 2026. To win Lotto Powerball, players currently have to get all six first division numbers - and the Powerball. There are 10 balls in the Powerball draw, numbered one to 10. The current odds of winning Lotto Powerball are 1 in 38m. Should one extra Powerball number be added, the odds would decrease to 1 in 42.2m. Adding two balls would see the odds drop to 1 in 46m, while increasing the size of the Powerball draw to 15 balls would see the odds dwindle to 1 in 57.5m. Current soaring sales are seeing Powerball being struck more regularly, which has reduced the frequency of high-stakes mega draws. The matrix change would decrease the number of wins, increasing the frequency of $50 million draws, lotto said. PHOTO: JAMES ALLAN PHOTOGRAPHY You appreciate how global international rugby's become when one of Argentina's assistant coaches lives in Queenstown. Former Southland Stag and Highlander utility back Kenny Lynn, 42, and his family shifted to Arrow Junction six months ago, after initially moving to Dunedin from France last year. He'd originally moved to France to play for Lyon in 2014 when it was still in the second division. Battling injury in his second year, he joined Lyon's coaching team and eventually became head coach of what's now an established Top 14 side. Last year he joined the Dunedin-based Highlanders as their attack coach, but, only one year into a three-year contract, accepted Pumas coach Felipe Contepomi's out-of-the-blue offer to join his coaching team. "When he first put it to me I obviously thought, 'well, we can't', because we'd just moved from France to New Zealand, we didn't want to move the kids all the way over to Argentina. "But when he said, 'no, it's fine, you can do it from NZ, we'll just fly you over for every Test series', then we just had to work out the calendar and if it was possible with the family and [wife] Becs and her work." Coming in last year as a backs and attack coach, mainly, the Pumas had a good '24, beating the All Blacks, Springboks and Wallabies in one Rugby Championship season for the first time — and so far they're the only team to have beaten this year's British and Irish Lions, in a warm-up game in Dublin. Along with the Pumas' other coaches, Lynn's contracted to the end of the 2027 Rugby World Cup, and says his job entails just being with the team about four months a year, working remotely the rest of the time. Though learning Spanish, he says their coaches' meetings are all conducted in French — "my Spanish is still a work-on and one of the coaches' English is a real work-on, but all four of us can speak French". As for their Queenstown move, "we were looking at maybe staying in Dunedin and getting a place over here to come in the summers, but we thought, 'why not just give it a go?"' The advantage is Becs' parents live in Queenstown — her dad's legendary former Southland breakfast radio host John 'Boggy' McDowell — and aside from the international airport also being handy, "we'd always wanted to be around here". So far they're loving it — his 8-year-old twin boys play Arrowtown junior rugby, while he's also popped along to two of the Arrowtown Premiers trainings. "In the summer I might be able to help out a little bit more, but we'll see."
