HK wins two bronzes in fencing championships final day

Team Hong Kong, China concluded the Asian Fencing Championships in Bali with a strong finish, securing bronze medals in both the men's foil and women's epee team events on Sunday.
The men's foil team, featuring individual gold medallist Ryan Choi alongside Edgar Cheung, Leung Chin-yu and Lawrence Ng, narrowly missed a place in the final.
They built a comfortable lead against Japan in the semi-finals, but a tough 3-12 loss for two-time Olympic gold medallist Cheung in the final bout saw Japan edge past Hong Kong 45-43.
This denied Hong Kong its first team final appearance since 2018.
The team bounced back decisively, defeating Chinese Taipei 45-31 to claim the bronze medal.
Japan took the gold, with the national team earning silver.
Meanwhile, the women's epee squad, with individual bronze medallist Kaylin Hsieh, Coco Lin, Natalie Chan and Moonie Chu, started powerfully.
They dominated Turkmenistan 45-22 in the first round and overcame Singapore 42-33 in the quarter-finals to reach the semis.
Facing world No. 2 China proved challenging, resulting in a 31-45 defeat.
However, the team secured their podium finish by defeating Japan 40-32 in the bronze medal match.
This double bronze medal performance on the final day capped an outstanding championships for Hong Kong, China.
The SAR team finished the competition with an impressive haul of one gold and four bronze medals across individual and team events.

Wong, 33, and Chan, 20, faced a tough battle against the mainland duo of Huang Youzheng and Xue Fei before prevailing in a five-game thriller. The SAR duo started aggressively in the first game, taking the first game 11-8 after building an early lead. Huang and Xue fought back to take the second game 12-10, taking advantage of a series of errors. The momentum kept shifting and the match went to a fifth game, which proved to be as tight as the rest of the contest. Down 9-10 in the deciding game, Wong and Chan won three points in a row to clinch the match and the championship with a 11-8,10-12,11-8,11-13,12-10 victory.

Hong Kong, China's Chiu Hin-chun has won his second silver in a row at the World Rowing Cup. In the lightweight men's single sculls in the Lucerne leg of the tournament on Saturday, he gained a 0.3-second lead at the 1,000-metre mark. But Felipe Kluver Ferreira of Uruguay accelerated in the latter half, with Chiu finishing just 1.24 seconds behind the gold medallist, clocking 6 minutes 54.46 seconds. The SAR athlete closed the gap with his Uruguayan rival after finishing 2.54 seconds behind him last month in the Varese leg, again taking silver. 'Proud of the progress, hungry for more. Grateful for the grind, the team, and every challenge that got me here,' Chiu wrote on Instagram. 'Eyes forward. We're not done yet.' Last year, Chiu won his first World Cup gold in Lucerne.
