This whacky battery tech could be used in your future smart home gadgets

Despite people harping on about it (which does get rather annoying), we do need to find more sustainable energy sources. Solar, nuclear, wind, and the rest are great – all with their own benefits, uses, and disadvantages. But what about for smaller devices that don't need so much power – like your outdoor smart home lights?
That's what Nova Innova is working on with its microbe-powered energy sources. The tech is still very much in its early days, but gives us a glimpse at what future smart home gadgets could look like. And there's potential for the tech to go much further. In fact, it's recently been used to light an entire Peugeot photo shoot.
But how exactly does it all work? And where might you start to see it crop up in your life? Here's everything you need to know about this whacky battery tech.
How does it work?
The science behind this next-gen energy tech is something called a Plant Microbial Fuel Cell, or P-MFC, developed in collaboration between Nova Innova and Plant-e. Essentially, it turns the soil into a miniature all-natural power station.
During photosynthesis, plants produce organic compounds. Some of these trickle out through the roots and into the soil, where hungry bacteria get to work. These microbes digest the compounds and, in the process, release electrons. Cleverly placed electrodes collect these electrons and, you've got a small but steady electric current.

It doesn't harm the plants – they keep photosynthesising, blissfully unaware they've been conscripted into the power grid. In fact, the whole system is CO₂-negative because it locks in more carbon than it emits. There are even some tests to treat the soil to try and increase the number of microbes and therefore power. But it's still in its early days.
Where might this tech be used?
The Living Light Park shows this off in the most charmingly Dutch way possible. I recently went for a wander through the park in Rotterdam. It's a 35-metre boardwalk with embedded lights and sensors. As you stroll along, the sensors detect your movement, and the lights glow in response, all thanks to energy pulled from the plants beneath your feet. Local residents chose the plants, gave feedback on the lighting design, and helped shape a park that shows off the next-gen energy infrastructure.
Nova Innova's vision stretches far beyond Rotterdam. This tech has powered everything from home decor – like the Living Light Lamp – to large-scale commercial events. For the launch of Peugeot's all-electric E-5008 SUV, the brand lit a photoshoot using 30 microbial fuel cells powered by a cocktail of plants, mud, water, and spent coffee grounds.
And this is where the smart home angle starts to make sense. Imagine bedside lamps, wall sconces, or even motion-sensitive garden lights that don't sip electricity from the grid but pull it straight from your potted fern. It's not just a nod to the sustainable – it's a way of integrating sustainability into the fabric of your daily routine, without sacrificing function or style. Plus, since these devices would generate their own power, it lessens the strain on drawing from other sustainable energy sources.
Beyond homes, there's talk of environmental sensors powered by marshlands, or emergency lighting in remote areas where running a power line would cost a fortune and then some. The tech is scalable, modular, and weirdly elegant. So yes, it may sound whacky. It kind of is. But it's also clever, green, and extremely fun.

The new Raleigh One couldn't look more different than the British bike brand's legendary Chopper if it tried. It's an ultra-minimal e-bike in the VanMoof mould – no coincidence, given the duo rumoured to be involved in shaping it – but with a few features fans of the Dutch mobility firm have long been begging for. From the off it seems to tick almost every box on the modern e-bike feature wish list: a battery stealthed inside the frame, rather than bolted on the outside; fully integrated front and rear lights (with the front one able to be moved from the frame to the optional front rack); a clean, low maintenance Gates carbon belt drive; and an SP Connect mount up front for using your phone as navigation. Launching first in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK in Off White and Sage Grey colours, the Raleigh One will arrive as a single frame style (there's no step-through option here) and in one size only. The integrated design reminds me of the Tenways CGO009 I reviewed recently, while the colours give it more than a whiff of VanMoof. Unlike the VanMoof S6, however, the One's battery can be removed for convenient charging even if you can't bring the bike itself to a mains socket. Raleigh has also gone off-the-shelf, rather than develop its own components, which should mean maintenance and servicing are more straightforward. That includes the 250W Mivice motor mounted to the rear wheel hub, which promises 80km of assistance in eco mode or 50km in boost mode. There's no VanMoof-style boost button for quickly getting up to speed at junctions or traffic lights, though. It'll need just under two and a half hours for a full charge. Stopping comes from Tektro hydraulic disc brakes. Naturally there's also a smartphone companion app, with GPS, auto unlocking as you approach, and an integrated alarm system – though some features are being gated behind a £7/ €78 per month subscription paywall. That includes the automatic stolen mode activation and maintenance alerts. The Raleigh One is going on sale next month for £2399/€2699 – that's around $3000 though there's curently no confirmed US launch.

In my house there's usually quite a lot of food on the go, but until I tested the Char-Broil Smart-E, BBQs at home were limited to a couple per year. That's not because my family doesn't enjoy them, quite the opposite, more that we're always on the go and by the time we get back to base it's usually too late to start messing about with briquettes…We (were) much more likely to use a BBQ on the beach or at a campsite than have one at home. It took about an hour and a half to put the Char-Broil Smart-E BBQ together – it comes very well packaged (read: you'll be making a trip to the recycling centre for all the cardboard) and although there's lots of parts it's easy to follow the build instructions. Happily, putting it together is the hardest thing you'll have to do with the Char-Broil Smart-E. The first thing to love about the Char-Broil Smart-E is that you don't need gas or coal – it's fully electric, so you literally need to plug it in and use the digital display to turn it on and heat to your required temperature of between 90°C and a whopping 370°C. After a few minutes the BBQ glows a solid blue to show it's up to temperature and you're ready to cook. It's actually no more effort than pre-heating the oven in my kitchen. The Smart-E is super sturdy, looks smart and the design has been well thought out with foldable sides that are useful when you're BBQing and fold down when you aren't. There's handy cupboard space underneath to store accessories and utensils under the grill, too. BBQing made easy With enough grill space for at least six people, the Smart-E is a cinch to use. I love its wonderfully big LCD display and oversized silver dial, the latter of which flashes until you're up to temp and ready to grill. An emitter plate transfers the cooking heat, to stop food drying out and ensure the stainless-steel cooking grate has a uniform temperature, which combined with the ability to set your cooking temperatures of between 90-370°C (controlled via the digital display) makes BBQing easier. Even from first use, there's no chance of the dreaded burnt outer, raw middle BBQ food, as you can control your cooking temperature so easily and the heat is even across the whole grill. All the meat I've BBQ'd on it has remained lovely and juicy and I also like that there's a warming rack for indirect grilling, which is great for cooking veggies. As electric BBQs still smoke, you absolutely get that authentic BBQ flavour. The grates on the Smart-E also add the coveted char lines to your food, which I always think makes it look more appealing. Auto clean – yep, really! Eating the food aside, my favourite thing about the Char-Broil Smart-E is the auto clean mode. A self-cleaning BBQ – what a time to be alive! The auto clean mode takes the BBQ up to 370°C full temp – you keep the lid closed and it turns fats etc. into ash so you can simply sweep it away – it even comes with a brush. I can't emphasise enough how well the auto clean mode works and what a complete game changer it is. Once the function has finished, all you have to do is brush down the grates and empty the tray underneath if needed and you're ready to use the next time. There's no going back to gas or coal There's no going back to gas or coal for me after experiencing the convenience of an electric BBQ. Since I've been testing the Char-Broil Smart-E, I've had a pergola fitted at home, which means I have BBQ'd in the rain, which feels a million miles away from BBQing a couple of times a year! The Char-Broil Smart-E certainly isn't cheap, but it is brilliant in terms of design, convenience, cooking experience and results and let's not forget it pretty much cleans itself too. I haven't loved anything cooking-related this much in years! Stuff Says… BBQs don't get any easier and cooking results are top notch, meaning you'll be far more inclined to use it! I talked to VanMoof's chief about building the firm's best ever e-bike

Given he was just days away from unveiling the first all-new e-bikes produced under his watch, it'd be understandable if Eliott Wertheimer was a little on edge when we sat down over video call to talk all things S6 and S6 Open – but the VanMoof co-CEO was in great spirits. The new bikes are meant to represent a turning point for the Dutch firm, now under new ownership. Issues of the past have been addressed, and there's more tech squeezed inside than ever. And as I'd already visited the Dutch firm's R&D warehouse for an early ride of a prototype earlier that week, I could understand his confidence. Read more: our first ride of the VanMoof S6 As well as exploring the S6's biggest upgrades, I also found out what it was like stepping in to run a company known for its stand-out styling, and his thoughts on the rapidly evolving electric bike market. I went from studying nuclear energy systems for deep space to electric scooters One of my best friends at the time, Albert (Nassar, now VanMoof co-CEO), was doing similar intensity research on robotics. We loved what we did, I loved how intellectually rewarding it was, but the academic world is inherently limiting. This was 2016; e-Bikes and scooters were starting to become a thing thanks to advances in battery and systems electronics. We bootstrapped a company in the UK, focusing on electric folding bikes and high performance e-scooters. Then Brexit happened. That stressed the business a bit, so we initiated fundraising and got acquired by McLaren Applied. Internally McLaren Applied had a secret crazy project where they were trying to launch a premium e-scooter for the ultra high-end market. It went a bit overboard in terms of budget and features, and they realised they needed a specialised company to take care of it. That's where Lavoie came from. There are a ton of e-bike companies, but not many are really innovating The bulk of the market is labelling Asian factory products. Some of the bigger brands create new frames, cool new form factors that integrate standard components in different ways. That's 99% of the market. Off the top of my head there are three companies including VanMoof that go and research, 'how can I improve that for the rider without the limitations of standardised parts?'. That's ambitious, that's difficult, but it's also necessary. We saw that VanMoof (which by July '23 had entered bankruptcy) was important. We started studying it. The plan was incredible, the way people related to it, the way people loved it. Even in markets where e-bikes weren't such a big thing, people that never actually thought about buying an e-bike, thought about VanMoof. The product was insane, in terms of technology and product ecosystem, electromechanical integration, back-end, apps… Everything was so impressive. There were problems that everyone knows now, like reliability and repairability. That led to issues – but we could fix that. We were like, okay, let's acquire it and restart it, because there's so much value there. The e-bike market is here to stay and will grow for sure The last few years have been horrible for the market. Demand stagnated post-COVID, and because of the big boom the year before everyone over-ordered. I think the bigger brands suffered less because they forced their retailers to dump that stock, which led to undercutting and underpricing. A lot of good brands died. Now it's stabilising. If you take the average, the growth curve over, let's say, 10 years will have been the same as we initially anticipated. I can see in 10, 20 years, depending on cultures, e-bikes and e-scooters will be the main modes of transport in cities. There's no way around it. Infrastructure and regulation is going in that direction. Go to Amsterdam today and you'll see what that looks like. Beautiful design should be at the service of function, rather than itself It's a bit of an Iconic shape, a VanMoof. Most people will agree – I'm sure some don't – that it's beautiful. It's simple and minimalistic in a functional way. It's also characteristically integrated, because every electronic part and the battery is designed to fit nicely in that beautiful design. Everything is really 'If I'm gonna put that in there, what does it do for my riders?' That's super hard, because most people don't know what they want. Through observing behaviour and product usage we can identify creative solutions. And then once you do that, oh wow. The kick lock sounds so simple. I arrive, I kick the thing with my foot and it locks the bike brakes. But that product needs to take kicks all the time, in tough weather. It needs to lock the mechanical system of the bike and deactivate its electronic system; it needs to make sure the bike's communicating to the app and the servers that it's in that locked state, so then we can trigger the right alarms; it needs to auto unlock if you're close enough so you just touch the bike and it unlocks. The usage is simple but the technology behind it is incredibly sophisticated. Doing things differently is risky, but it's the only way to push the industry forward Way before I was here VanMoof took the ambitious decision to go with front motors. It's more aesthetic, allows for better gearing, and means you have all-wheel drive; you're putting power to the rear wheel, the motor sends power to the front one. But if that's not done properly it's not a nice experience. When e-bikes started, electronics weren't that good to really tune your power curves, so you had some joltiness. So most brands went with rear motors. VanMoof said 'let's just develop through and innovate through the issues we're seeing, then eventually we'll have a great thing.' We've got years of positive handicap now. Even for the big companies it's not going to be easy to catch up with us. The thinking and implementation takes time, no matter how many people you put on it. Vocal customers are super-important when developing new bikes. But so are the quiet ones. A single person giving you feedback doesn't have much value, because it's very personal. But if you watch an entire discussion with a lot of riders, you can flesh out what's required, even when it's not mentioned. They are saying this, but if we had that then it would be gone, you know? We've got multiple feedback channels. Sales partners provide great sales feedback; we have teams who watch online communities like Reddit and Facebook; we send huge rider surveys every six months. The app is an amazing tool it provides us with anonymised data like power consumption, speed. Then we have the beta program within the app. It all helps us decide what is good but could be improved, what is OK but no-one cares about so let's remove it, and what are the things we don't have that people would like us to have. We've learned from the past. Sometimes it's better to let other people solve your problems for you We partnered with Peak Design for the S6's phone mount. You won't really need your phone with the integrated navigation, but we have a great dashboard app, so if you do want that we need the best available system. We're not going to do it ourselves, we've got enough to do. So we went to all the big providers. Peak, beyond their company ethos – which is really aligned with what we do – the product is so smooth and aesthetically matching our product. I'm super happy how it's worked out. My motorbike is black, my phone is black, my computer is black… but I think the blue S6 is the most beautiful one Our approach was 'everyone wants a dark bike, let's go for that for sure'. We created our own Midnight Black colour combination, with peal to make sure the reflections look good. Then we had the pale mint, which we're super happy with how it enters the light. The blue was just 'OK, let's go for something flashy' in a way people will be proud to own it, that's nice on the eyes. I love it.
