Staying afloat in Hong Kong's food and drink scene is no easy feat. With steep rent prices, consumers travelling to Mainland China for affordable spending, and fierce competition between competitors, many local restaurants are bearing the brunt of high operational costs, leading them to make tough decisions. Unfortunately, after eight years of operating in Central, Uma Nota and Bedu by Meraki Hospitality are closing their doors on June 21. Founded by siblings Alex and Laura Offe in 2018, Meraki Hospitality has made its mark in Hong Kong's culinary scene with its exciting eateries.
According to the hospitality group, the decision to close both restaurants comes after the challenges of rising costs and the changing landscape of Hong Kong's market. The founders also believe this pause will give them time to reflect, recharge, and introduce innovative concepts.
'While closing these restaurants is bittersweet, the relationships and memories we've built together will always stay with us. We are deeply grateful to our community, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back with fresh ideas in the future.', shared Alex.
As Hong Kong's first Brazilian-Japanese restaurant, Uma Nota opened its doors in 2017 and paid homage to Brazilian botecos – a hangout spot that serves alcoholic beverages and snacks. Following its success, Meraki Hospitality also launched Uma Nota's concept in cities like Paris in 2018 and Manila in 2024. As for the latter of the two restaurants, Bedu opened in 2018 on Gough Street, offering innovative and modern takes on classic Middle Eastern fare, quickly becoming a neighbourhood mainstay.
So, what's in store for Meraki Hospitality? The sibling duo are currently preparing to unveil Sabai, an elevated Thai restaurant in Manila. While the hospitality group has yet to share details of future endeavours in Hong Kong, they remain hopeful to return to the city's dining scene.

Meanwhile, almost a third of employers say increased operational and staffing costs are affecting their ability to pay work experience students or cover expenses. A new Broughty Ferry bathroom and kitchen showroom is selling a £3,000 toilet and £7,500 bath. Despite the eye-watering price points of some items, Home Improvement Centre owner Maria Inglis says her focus is on 'affordable luxury'. The new business is located on Gray Street, in the former Millars clothing store unit, which shut last year after more than a century of trading. The shop boasts three kitchen displays and eight bathroom bays and offers a full design to installation service. Maria said: 'We have a variety of price points – it's not all top end. We want to be attainable. 'Affordable luxury is what we're going for – everyone should have a nice space to live in.' The heated Japanese toilet on display has the ability to wash and dry. The £7,500 black stone bath in the window has been imported from Italy. It required six people to lift the 220kg bath into the shop. 'The Japanese-style toilets are becoming more popular,' said Maria. 'It is an expensive item – not everyone will put this in their bathroom – but there are people who will go for this. 'It has ambient lighting on the toilet so you don't need to put the bathroom lights on in the middle of the night. 'The bath comes from Aquabella, a Spanish company. They are quite exclusive and expensive, for people who want to have something extra special. 'We've put it in the window to show we're different and not run-of-the-mill. We hope having something spectacular in the window will draw people in to have a look.' Maria, who is married to Ian, said she has a passion for bathrooms and kitchens. She said the kitchens in the business are British-made with an emphasis on innovative storage solutions. She adds: 'I find kitchens exciting. As a mother of three, I feel like I spend my life in the kitchen. 'It's such a valuable space in the home. It needs to look good, but it needs to work for you as a family. It's the heart of the home. 'The Scandi-look is on trend at the moment, with a lot of natural textures and quite clean and minimalist. 'Open shelving is very popular, particularly in smaller spaces as it gives the feeling of more space. 'People are wanting to see a bit of texture in their bathrooms.' Maria said there had been a lot of interest from passing customers as the shop underwent a three-month refurbishment. The couple, who live in Monifieth, have spent more than £160,000 on the refurbishment and stock. Maria, who overcame throat cancer five years ago, said: 'When the premises popped up on Gray Street it was an opportunity not to be missed. 'We have had so many people asking about the shop as the work's been going on. 'We're really excited to open our doors on Saturday.'

Their report states the location ceased trading on 20 June, following a review as its lease was nearing expiry. Sunil Joshi, managing director, said: "We can confirm that the Wilmoths Winchester Bar End branch is closing. 'The lease for the site was due for renewal, and after careful consideration, we have made the decision not to extend it. "This choice reflects our ongoing efforts to streamline operations while continuing to provide excellent service to our customers, many of whom are also able to access our nearby Wilmoths Southampton branch. "We are committed to keeping our customers informed and ensuring a smooth transition. "Every effort is being made to minimise disruption and maintain the high level of service our customers expect." The aforementioned Wilmoths Southampton branch is located some 13 miles away. The brand, which also trades as Jarretts, represents Citroen, DS, Fiat, Abarth and Peugeot, with sites found across Kent, Hampshire, Berskhire, Sussex and Surrey. HIT THE BRAKES After a problem-strewn period of months, Nissan has confirmed it will be axing hundreds of jobs at one of its Sunderland factory. The job losses will hit non-manufacturing positions with around 250 staff to be made redundant. Nissan has announced the cuts amid a desperate bid to balance the books and support a global effort to become a more "resilient business." The attempts to save the brand were ramped up after merger talks with Honda fell through. Earlier this year the firm announced 20,000 job losses, seven factory closures and a pause on all post-2026 new car development. The closures of seven of its factories would see the brand limited to just 10 sites.
