Deep-Sea Wonderland Found Thriving Where Humans Have Never Been

A deep-sea expedition to one of Earth's most remote island chains has surfaced stunning pictures of the vibrant ecosystems surrounding hydrothermal vents that scientists didn't even know were there.
The 35-day journey aboard Schmidt Ocean Institute's Falkor (too) research vessel was part of the Ocean Census's race to document marine life before it is lost to threats like climate change and deep sea mining.
This expedition took an international team of scientists to the South Sandwich Islands, in the South Atlantic near Antarctica, which boasts the Southern Ocean's deepest trench.
Despite facing subsea earthquakes, hurricane-force winds, towering waves, and icebergs, the crew was rewarded with a trove of incredible new discoveries.
You might have already watched the expedition's world-first footage of a live colossal squid, but some of their other finds deserve a moment in the spotlight.
Like this vermillion coral garden thriving on Humpback Seamount, near the region's shallowest hydrothermal vents at around 700 meters deep (nearly 2,300 feet).
The tallest vent chimney stood four meters (13 feet) tall, proudly sporting an array of life, including barnacles and sea snails. Like drones in a New Year's Eve sky, a fleet of shrimp whizzed round these submarine skyscrapers.
These hydrothermal vents, on the northeast side of Quest Caldera, are the only South Sandwich Island vents explored via remotely operated vehicle (ROV) thus far; we can't wait to see what future expeditions uncover.
"Discovering these hydrothermal vents was a magical moment, as they have never been seen here before," says hydrographer Jenny Gales from the University of Plymouth in the UK.
But certain specimens deserve a close-up: like this exquisite nudibranch, unspecified, which blackwater photographer Jialing Cai snapped at 268 meters deep in the near-freezing waters east of Montagu Island.
Nearby, a slightly more upsetting moment was captured: a grenadier fish with parasitic copepods – likely Lophoura szidati – tucked into its gills like horrid pigtails.
And this stout little sea cucumber, recorded 650 metres below the sea surface at Saunders East, with a gob full of what we will informally dub a deep-sea puffball.
Now, brace yourself for the first ever image of Akarotaxis aff. gouldae, a species of dragonfish that has evaded our cameras for two years since its discovery.
Something else that nobody's seen before? Snailfish eggs on a black coral. Not even marine biologists knew this was a thing, until now.
"This expedition has given us a glimpse into one of the most remote and biologically rich parts of our ocean," says marine biologist Michelle Taylor, the Ocean Census project's head of science.
"This is exactly why the Ocean Census exists – to accelerate our understanding of ocean life before it's too late. The 35 days at sea were an exciting rollercoaster of scientific discovery, the implications of which will be felt for many years to come as discoveries filter into management action."

Emperor penguins live in some of the most remote and environmentally pristine regions in the world. But that doesn't mean they're safe from the impacts of a warming planet. Just ask Dr. Birgitte McDonald, a researcher at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. For 15 years, she's studied emperor penguins and how they dive, swim, and forage for food. A new report published in the journal Nature has deepened her concern about the penguins' survival. "This report wasn't too surprising but a little depressing at how fast it seems to be happening in one region," remarked McDonald. The report involved scientists from the British Antarctic Survey. For 15 years, they've monitored 16 colonies of emperor penguins via satellite imagery. These colonies represent roughly a third of all the emperor penguins on earth. Five years ago, the scientists found a 9.5% drop. The updated data shows a startling 22% drop. "Overall, the picture is quite poor. It's quite dire for the penguins," remarked Dr. Peter Fretwell, lead author of the new analysis. The warming of the planet is thinning and destabilizing the sea ice that is critical for the breeding and molting of the penguins. There is more competition for available food among all the creatures in the area. In addition, scientists are detecting more extreme weather in the form of more rainfall and storms. An increase in extreme weather is a hallmark of climate change. "The chicks are well insulated with their down, but the down only really works if they stay dry. And so, if there is a lot more rain, the chicks will have to spend more energy trying to stay warm," explained McDonald. "So, going out to sea for the first time at a lighter weight, and that could decrease their chance of survival." As to what we can do to slow the warming, McDonald offered some advice: fly less, try more carpooling and driving less, and eat less meat. These are all small steps, but if large enough people practice them, McDonald noted, there could be a difference. Here are more ideas on how you can reduce your carbon footprint. Antarctic mystery deepens with radio waves detected below the ice

Mountains, sub-glacial lakes, hidden valleys, even remnants of lost civilizations: what lies under Antarctica's vast 2,000-metre thick ice sheet has long been a mystery akin to the depths of the ocean or the dark side of the moon. As big as the US and India combined, much of the frozen continent is off-limits to the handful of hardy visitors permitted each year, adding to the mystery. The sense of enigma has been heightened by the revelation that "strange radio pulses" detected in the ice defy explanation after almost a decade of trying to figure them out. First picked up in 2016 by instrument-laden balloons flown by NASA's Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) team, the inexplicable "anomalies" appear to be a "form of radio waves," according to researchers from Penn State University (PSU). But what makes the pulses anomalous is that they "appeared to be coming from below the horizon" - an orientation that "cannot be explained by the current understanding of particle physics," the researchers confirmed. "The radio waves that we detected nearly a decade ago were at really steep angles, like 30 degrees below the surface of the ice," said PSU's Stephanie Wissel, who was part of the NASA ANITA team. In other words, the pulses should have been absorbed by rock - thousands of kilometres of it going by the angle of the pulses - long before the balloons could detect them. "It's an interesting problem because we still don't actually have an explanation for what those anomalies are," Wissel said. Funded by the US Department of Energy and the US National Science Foundation, the PSU researchers were part of a team made up of dozens of scientists that worked at the world's biggest cosmic ray detector - the Pierre Auger Observatory on the western Argentine plain - to try solve the riddle. The team's attempt to decode the mystery featured in the journal Physical Review Letters in late March and was publicised in a statement released by PSU in mid-June. In mid-March, a multinational team of scientists including representatives of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) published what they described as "the most detailed map yet" of sub-glacial Antarctica. Showing the shape of the continent were it ice-free, the map showed a tapestry of islands, mountains and valleys and revealed the ice's thickest point to be an approximately 4,700-metre section filling an unnamed canyon.
