FDA suspends Mumbai MLA hostel canteen contractor's licence after 'stale' food claim by legislator

The Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has suspended the licence of Ajanta Caterers, the firm operating the canteen at the Akashwani MLA hostel in Mumbai, following allegations of serving stale food.
The move came after an inspection revealed multiple violations under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its associated regulations.
The suspension, effective Thursday, follows a incident in which Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad physically assaulted a canteen staffer, accusing the caterer of repeatedly serving substandard food.
The Buldhana legislator, from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, was captured on video slapping and punching an employee, prompting widespread public and political backlash.
The viral video shows Gaikwad confronting the canteen staff, allegedly forcing the employee to smell stale dal before assaulting him. Gaikwad later defended his actions, saying he had previously raised concerns about food quality multiple times but no action was taken.

Slapgate: Cops file NC after CM contradicts min

Mumbai: Two days after a video of Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad assaulting staffers at the Akashwani MLA hostel canteen in Colaba over "stale dal" went viral, Marine Drive police registered a non-cognisable offence against him on Friday. The NC was filed soon after CM Fadnavis contradicted minister of state for home Yogesh Kadam in an embarrassment of sorts for the state govt. While Kadam said police cannot act against Gaikwad as there is no complaint, the CM said cops should definitely probe the case and no one needs to file a complaint for that, report Mateen Hafeez & Chaitanya Marpakwar. A cop from Marine Drive police station filed the complaint. "We have registered a suo motu case against Gaikwad and one more person," an officer said. Police on Friday booked Buldhana MLA Sanjay Gaikwad and his aide, who was also seen in the video allegedly assaulting a canteen worker, under Sections 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 3(5) (common participation in a crime) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Minister Yogesh Kadam had said on Friday morning, "If there is a complaint then action can be taken. If there is no complaint, there is no question of action." The incident took place on Tuesday evening after Gaikwad was allegedly served stale dal and rice in his room. In the video, Gaikwad, who was in a vest and towel, was seen hitting two canteen staffers after forcing them to smell the food. He was also seen punching one of the two staff members. The opposition has criticised the govt for not taking action against Gaikwad despite the assault video going viral. NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule had demanded that an FIR be filed. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray said, "This assault took place in the MLAs' hostel, so the assembly Speaker must also take action. Should all MLAs start beating up people like this and get away with it? The govt must answer this." Gaikwad has repeatedly justified his behaviour and said he would not apologise. He had said on Wednesday, "This contractor has been squatting here for 30 years. So when nothing else worked, I had to take things into my own hands. I'm an MLA and warrior. I'm a judo and karate champion, and a wrestling champion too. So I can use any means. When the administration doesn't work despite repeated reminders, what will people do? They will take law into their own hands. If an MLA complains and nothing is done, should I give up my life? I'm not such a big Gandhian. I have no regrets and I don't feel bad about this." The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday suspended the licence of the caterer who operates the MLA hostel canteen, citing 79 violations of food safety norms.

Such things won't affect my career, says Shinde Sena minister Sanjay Shirsat on ‘bag of cash' video

ThePrint has not been able to validate the authenticity of the video. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut posted the video on his X page and said, 'I feel pity for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis! How many more times will he just sit and watch his reputation being torn to shreds? Helplessness has another name: Fadnavis .' Speaking about the viral video outside the assembly, Shirsat told the reporters, 'People are always taking my videos wherever I go. This is common. The room seen in the video is my bedroom. I had come back from my travels and the bag seen is that (luggage). If the bag had money, wouldn't I have kept it in the cupboard? I don't even know when the video was shot. Such things won't affect my career.' Mumbai: A day after Maharashtra cabinet minister and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat received an income tax notice, a video has gone viral on social media which shows him sitting on a bed, purportedly next to a bag of cash. The Maharashtra assembly session is currently underway. Earlier this week, the Opposition questioned the Social Justice Minister and alleged irregularities in the auction of a hotel in Chatrapati Sambhajinagar, to which Shirsat belongs. The Opposition alleged that there were irregularities in the tender process for the sale of Hotel VITS in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. One of the bidders was a company owned by Shiv Sena leader's son Siddhant Shirsat. CM Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a probe into the deal. On Thursday, Shirsat told media he had received an I-T notice seeking an explanation for the increase in his financial worth between the 2019 and 2024 assembly elections, from Rs 3 crore to Rs 35 crore according to documents submitted to the EC. Shirsat told reporters he had received the I-T notice based on someone's complaint. 'Some people had a problem with me, but I will answer them… The system is doing its work and I have no problem with it. I am not under any pressure. We have asked for time to reply to the notice, and will clarify our position,' he told the media. ThePrint tried to reach Shirsat via calls. But the calls remained unanswered. This report will be updated once he responds. (Edited by Viny Mishra) Also read: Fadnavis pulls up ally Shinde Sena's MLA for thrashing canteen worker after viral video

EOW questionsSalar Jung's kin over realty gift

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar police on Friday grilled Mir Mehboob Ali Khan, his son and 3 daughters of Hyderabad, for the third day in a row over gifting a prime plot worth over Rs 150 crore to Jawed Rasul Shaikh, driver of Shiv Sena MP Sandipan Bhumre and his MLA son, Vilas. Sources said on each of the three days, these five members, who claim to be descendants of Salar Jung, the Prime Minister of Nizam of Hyderabad, were grilled for eight hours before being allowed to return the next day to cooperate in the inquiry. EOW inspector Sambhaji Pawar said, "Khan, his son and three daughters appeared before the EOW on Friday, which was the third day of inquiry of this family, which has gifted such a large property to an unrelated person working as a driver. Several of our questions remain unanswered." The officer said Khan claimed he gifted this property without anything in return.
