Meta is cracking down on AI 'nudify' apps
The crackdown comes months after several researchers and journalists have raised the alarm about such apps. A recent report from CBS News identified at least "hundreds" of ads on Meta's platform promoting apps that allow users to "remove clothing" from images of celebrities and others. One app in particular, called Crush AI, has apparently been a prolific advertiser on Facebook and Instagram. Researcher Alexios Mantzarlis, Director of Cornell Tech's Security, Trust and Safety Initiative, reported back in January that Crush AI had run more than 8,000 ads on Facebook and Instagram since last fall.
Now, Meta says it has filed a lawsuit against Joy Timeline HK Limited, the Hong Kong-based company behind Crush AI and other nudify apps. "This follows multiple attempts by Joy Timeline HK Limited to circumvent Meta's ad review process and continue placing these ads, after they were repeatedly removed for breaking our rules," the company wrote in a blog post. Joy Timeline HK Limited didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Meta also says it's taking new steps to prevent apps like these from advertising on its platform. "We've developed new technology specifically designed to identify these types of ads — even when the ads themselves don't include nudity — and use matching technology to help us find and remove copycat ads more quickly," Meta wrote. "We've worked with external experts and our own specialist teams to expand the list of safety-related terms, phrases and emojis that our systems are trained to detect within these ads." The social network says it also plans to work with other tech platforms, including app store owners, to share relevant details about entities that abuse its platform.
Nudify apps aren't the only entities that have exploited Meta's advertising platform to run ads featuring celebrity deepfakes. Meta has also struggled to contain shady advertisers that use AI-manipulated video of public figures to promote scams . The company's independent Oversight Board, which weighs in on content moderation issues affecting Facebook and Instagram, recently criticized Meta for under-enforcing its rules prohibiting such ads.

Proposed 72-hour train route between LA, NY aims to debut in 2026
A rail company is proposing a new privately funded train route that can begin transporting people between Los Angeles and New York City in less than 72 hours as soon as next year. Delaware-based group AmeriStarRail unveiled its coast-to-coast route called the Transcontinental Chief with hopes of it being operational by May 10, 2026, ahead of the United States' 250th birthday and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The goal date, which lands on National Train Day, is subject to operating agreements with various host railroads, the company clarified. The project has been presented to the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, also known as Amtrak. AmeriStarRail argues that a partnership between the two companies would be mutually beneficial, emphasizing that the route would be more profitable than Amtrak's existing long-distance trains. AmeriStarRail CEO Scott Spencer said Amtrak is seeking more information on the planning and coordination of the proposed system. "This is a way to confront the challenges Amtrak faces and create opportunities for them to succeed," Spencer told USA TODAY. "We're hopeful that all the parties that are involved including the host railroads recognize what a great opportunity this is for our nation." Amtrak did not respond to multiple USA TODAY requests for comment. Transcontinental Chief to replace existing bicoastal routes AmeriStarRail said the Transcontinental Chief train would replace the Southwest Chief and the Pennsylvanian Amtrak routes that currently help transport people between Southern California and New York via stops in Chicago or Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. New Yorkers will board the train from the Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey, a three-mile ride to Lower Manhattan across the Hudson River through the Holland Tunnel. AmeriStarRail clarified that it's unable to directly stop in the Big Apple due to New York Penn Station tunnel restrictions for the passenger cars Amtrak uses, known as Superliners. However, there are no boarding restrictions in Los Angeles. The route would also include a single-level train section from Harrisburg to serve people in Washington, D.C., via Philadelphia, according to AmeriStarRail. "In discussion with various interests along the route, whether that be Victorville, California; Newton, Kanas; Lebanon, Pennsylvania, they recognize the economic engine that the Transcontinental Chief will be for their communities," Spencer said. Spencer added that the Transcontinental Chief would also offer travelers on Route 66 an alternative way back from their nearly 2,500-mile drive. Bicoastal route to be 'rolling rest stop for truckers' In addition to transporting passengers, the Transcontinental Chief would also transport truck drivers and their tractor trailers between the West and East coasts within the three-day span, according to AmeriStarRail. Through a roll-on, roll-off loading system, the route would serve as a "rolling rest stop for truckers" while offering a safe alternative to parking shortages, the company states. "At RailPorts along the route, truckers will be able to drive their entire tractor trailer trucks onto railroad flatcars and then rest and relax onboard Amtrak Coach, Sleeper and Dining cars as they travel 200 - 500 miles during their federally mandated 10 hour rest period," an AmeriStarRail news release states. Intending to debut next May, Spencer said the route would start with intermediate ports available in LA and New York City, with plans to incorporate more in the future. The company aims to transport cars, vans, motorcycles, RVs and charter motorcoaches, eventually also serving the Grand Canyon and Chicago.

Figma IPO surge 'can't be the new norm' on Wall Street, Jim Cramer says
CNBC's Jim Cramer reviewed Thursday's market action and said that Figma's initial public offering overshadowed strong earnings results from tech giants Meta and Microsoft, warning that the design software company's opening pop is a sign of froth. "You have to hope that Figma's a one-and-done bout of enthusiasm. It just can't be the norm," he said. "And as someone who brought a company public during the heyday of 1999, I know what I'm talking about…We don't want to go back to the bubble territory." Figma shares more than tripled during its market debut and continued to soar in extended trading. Initially priced at $33, the stock finished the day up 250% to hit $115.50. Figma's software helps create interfaces for website and applications, and its customer base includes Google, Microsoft, Netflix and Uber. Cramer said there is an issue with Figma stock, not Figma the company. The software designer turns a profit, is growing fast and has a great product, he said. But the price of the stock is "wildly inflated" because it doesn't make enough money. He pointed out that Figma's price-to-sales ratio is much higher than that of both Meta and Microsoft, two of the largest companies in the world. Cramer wondered if Thursday marked a new phase of the bull market, one of "ludicrous valuations," but indicated he hoped that was not the case. It's better that Wall Street focus on quarterly results, Cramer continued. "At the end of the day, I hope we can go back to focusing on earnings rather than getting more IPOs like Figma," Cramer said. "We got to put this genie back in the bottle." Figma did not immediately respond to request for comment.
