Alabama hemp businesses bracing for impact with crackdown weeks away
Those regulations will take effect in the form of a new law July 1. Hemp companies said it will kill small businesses, while the sponsor said it's long overdue.
'They're kind of pulling the rug out from under us and going backwards in the industry,' said Blake Gamberi, owner of Dry Creek Wellness in Glencoe.
'I'm sorry to those folks who it's going to be negatively affecting for sure,' said Carmelo Parasiliti, owner of Green Acres Organic Pharms in Florence.
The crackdown caps THC levels to 10 milligrams per serving in a product and bans it for people under 21. The original bill sponsor, state Rep. Andy Whitt, R-Harvest, said gas stations have become pharmacies for some people.
'Anytime that you have to reach between the motor oil and the beef jerky to get a product that you're going to smoke and/or take to medicate or get high, that is not good for the state of Alabama,' Whitt said.
Gamberi said the new law is confusing, but they are working to get their products in compliance.
'We got high hopes that they'll get everything in line and make it where we don't have to close our doors …,' Gamberi said. 'It's a very short time period to adjust something that you've done over four or five years, even longer than that.'
Parasiliti said they are keeping their doors open but moving some of their business to other states.
'It's a lot of work ahead of us, but we're going to keep going and keep trying,' Parasiliti said.
Alabama Department of Public Health determines there are no active measles cases in the state
David Beck, owner of The Humble Hemp Shack in Gadsden, said it will probably have to close down altogether.
'It's a very scary feeling, and a scary feeling for our customers as well,' Beck said.
Whitt said those customers will now be able to get a product that is safely tested by a third party. He said the law does not legalize marijuana but does not ban hemp products.
'It was time to get these products under control for the safety of our citizens and the safety of our kids and get a handle on it,' Whitt said. 'It lets there be an authority that can actually oversee this product.'
Whitt said that authority, the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, will soon release guidelines for businesses on how it will enforce the law. Products outlined in the law will be banned July 1.
Whitt said businesses will be able to start the licensing process to sell hemp products with the ABC Board in January.

UK-based CBD drinks maker Goodrays has raised £5m ($6.79m) in a new funding round led by venture capital firm Guinness Ventures. Goodrays said it intends to use the funds to expand its "premium product portfolio", bolster its marketing efforts and secure new listings with retailers, as well as "[accelerate] relationships with existing partners". Last week, the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) released new guidance urging CBD businesses to reformulate their food and drink products to meet its provisional acceptable daily intake (ADI) for CBD and a new upper limit for THC. What to Know About Smoking Cannabis Stems
The negligible amount of THC in stems isn't worth the unpleasant effects and risks to your lungs that come with smoking. These are wild times, so it's not that weird that you're looking at your bowl of stems and contemplating smoking them. Waste not, want not, right? As nice as it is to reduce waste and be resourceful, smoking stems isn't the solution. For starters, they don't contain much THC If stems are all you have left, then you've already smoked the good stuff. Stems contain almost no THC. What little may be in there doesn't even come close to being enough to produce a high. Smoking them can also lead to some uncomfortable side effects Inhaling smoke harms your lungs. It doesn't matter if it's bud, seed, tobacco, or burning wood. Toxins and carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) are released from the combustion of materials, even stems. This damages your lungs and increases your risk for cancer, heart disease, and lung disease. Smoke effects aside, smoking stems can cause: headache sore throat coughing It'll also taste like you're smoking wood chips. Some people on Reddit and other forums who admit to having smoked weed stems also reported uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms, like nausea and abdominal pain. What about smoking the seeds? Nope. You shouldn't smoke those either. Cannabis seeds aren't going to get you high, no matter how many you crush and smoke. There's just not enough THC in the seeds to produce any effects. If you don't have a diffuser, you can steep your ground stems in a pot of boiling water and then place a coffee filter over your mug and pour so it strains your brew. Make stem butter Bake your stems in the oven at 225°F (107°C) for 45 minutes and let them cool before grinding. Place some butter in a pan and melt over low heat. Once the butter's completely melted, add the ground stems and let simmer for around 30 minutes, stirring often. Cheesecloth works best to strain it. Secure the cheesecloth over a glass jar with a rubber band, and slowly pour the butter over the cloth. Let the butter cool, and voilà — stem butter! The bottom line Smoking weed stems and seeds won't do much other than give you a wicked headache. It's also pretty harsh on your lungs. That said, they're not a total waste, either. You can use them if you get a little creative. Keep in mind that cannabis can be addictive for some people.
