MIC open to new alliances, but Johari dismisses remarks as emotion-driven, not party stand
Johari stressed that only decisions made by the party carry weight, not individual statements, and urged against worsening the situation, noting that some leaders may speak out of emotion.
'Did he? When did he say it? Was it him speaking, or the party? Him? He can't make a statement representing the party. An individual cannot.'
'Even I, along with Datuk Jazlan (Mohamed, often say things that are not aligned with the party, but when the party makes a decision, that's different. This is from an individual, it's different.'
'If it's an individual, everyone wants to talk. But if the party makes a decision, then I will comment. For now, I cannot comment,' he said to reporters after officiating the UMNO Pulai Division meeting at the Tan Sri Mohamed Rahmat Complex on Saturday.
Saravanan had earlier expressed frustration in an interview, claiming he and MIC felt misled by BN Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who allegedly promised Cabinet posts if MIC supported Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister.
He also suggested MIC might reconsider its cooperation with the coalition if it continues to be sidelined.
Meanwhile, MIC President Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran expressed the party's readiness to engage in discussions with any political party to ensure its survival and better serve the Indian community.
Speaking at the 79th Perak MIC Convention yesterday, he said the move prioritises party interests, not external pressure.
'If it benefits the party and the Indian community, I will do whatever is necessary,' he stated. While no formal offers have been received, Vigneswaran remains open to talks. —Aug 3, 2025

Trump says to raise tariff on India over Russia oil purchases
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump threatened Monday to "substantially" hike US tariffs on goods from India over its purchases of Russian oil – a key source of revenue for Moscow's war on Ukraine. Trump's heightened pressure on India comes after he signaled fresh sanctions on Moscow if it did not make progress by Friday towards a peace deal with Kyiv, more than three years since Russia's invasion. Moscow is anticipating talks with the US leader's special envoy Steve Witkoff, who is expected to meet President Vladimir Putin this week. On Monday, Trump said in a post to his Truth Social platform that India was "buying massive amounts of Russian Oil" and selling it for "big profits." "They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine," Trump added. "Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA." But he did not provide details on what tariff level he had in mind. For now, an existing 10 percent US tariff on Indian products is expected to rise to 25 percent come Thursday.

Masiung rejects PM's proposal for GRS-BN-PH alliance

TONGOD (Aug 4): Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) vice president Datuk Masiung Banah has rejected Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's proposal for Barisan Nasional (BN) to form a tripartite alliance with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) ahead of the 17th State Election. 'Such an understanding is unlikely to materialize as it would confuse voters. Moreover, GRS and PH have already agreed to continue their political cooperation,' Masiung said in response to the Prime Minister's suggestion made yesterday. He added that if a three-party alliance were to take shape, Gagasan Rakyat would stand by Anwar's earlier statement made in Tawau on May 11, where the Prime Minister expressed support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor to lead the seat negotiation process. During a special meeting with Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leaders in Kota Kinabalu yesterday, Anwar had expressed his intention to mediate negotiations between GRS, BN and PH to avoid three-cornered contests in the upcoming state election. However, Masiung firmly dismissed the idea, describing it as a political 'love triangle' that Gagasan Rakyat — the backbone of GRS — would not support. He emphasized that GRS and PH Sabah already have a solid foundation of political cooperation, particularly in the administration of the state government. 'GRS has lost trust in BN/Umno due to their betrayal during the 'Langkah Kinabalu' episode,' he said, referring to the political manoeuvre he claimed was orchestrated by BN/Umno to undermine the ruling coalition. Masiung pointed out that since the episode, BN/Umno leaders have continuously acted with hostility toward GRS, employing various tactics to destabilize the alliance. 'At the same time, Umno/BN Sabah has also declared that it will no longer work with GRS,' he noted. He urged the Prime Minister to respect GRS's position and honour his earlier commitment to allow GRS chairman Hajiji Noor to lead the seat negotiations among aligned parties ahead of the state polls.
