Monnapule Saleng says his football will do the talking
Image: BACKPAGEPIX
Monnapule Saleng will spend the upcoming Premiership season on loan at newly promoted Orbit College from Orlando Pirates — and the midfielder is delighted to return to familiar surroundings.
The move comes after months of uncertainty about his future, following a 2024/25 campaign in which he missed most of the action with the Buccaneers.
The midfielder makes his return to his former side on a season-long loan, having recently signed a two-year contract extension with Pirates. He moves in search of regular game time after falling out of favour with the Sea Robbers last season.
Orbit made history by earning promotion to the Premiership through the PSL play-offs, overcoming Cape Town City and Casric Stars to secure their place among the elite. As they prepare for their first season in the top flight, the addition of Saleng offers a major boost — bringing in a player who not only knows the club well but also has valuable experience at the highest level.

Back at the club where his career started, the Bafana Bafana attacker expressed his relief at being able to return to action after spending an extended period on the sidelines.
'I am very happy to be back home, and I thank God for giving me the strength to find my way with Orbit. I am happy they got a promotion, and coming back home brings me a lot of joy,' Saleng said.
'It wasn't an easy decision to come back, especially after having had a long season without playing. I kept on pushing myself even though I was not playing, and I kept supporting the team while waiting for my opportunity, but fortunately I got the opportunity to come back home.'
The 27-year-old added that during that challenging spell, drawing strength from his roots kept him going.
'Looking at where you come from, that is where you keep pushing and not break easily. There was motivation here and there, there were talks, but I pushed until I got the opportunity to come to Orbit and get the game time so that the next time I come back, I am fit.'
The move comes at a vital time in his career — not only does it offer a chance for regular football, but it also gives him the opportunity to push for a return to the Bafana setup ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations later this year.
Orbit will be the only club representing the North West province in the Premiership, becoming the first to do so since Platinum Stars were relegated at the end of the 2017/18 season. Although Saleng knows the club well, he's aware that breaking into the starting lineup won't be guaranteed.
'The style of playing hasn't changed that much compared to three years ago,' he continued. 'There has been a few player changes but the style hasn't changed.
"The coach has shown me how he wants us to play and it has made it easy for me to adjust and the players around me have been supportive of me. My performances will talk, I know AFCON is around the corner, but my performance will do the talking.'

Brazilian Ribeiro back in the groove at Mamelodi Sundowns amid talk of Pyramids transfer
Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club Global sports company PUMA and Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club (MSFC) on Thursday launched the new Home and Away kits for the 2025/26 season. Photo: Supplied The 26-year-old Brazilian was undeniably the standout player for Sundowns during the 2024/25 season, contributing a remarkable 25 goals across 51 matches, leading the club to a triumphant league victory and an exhilarating run in the CAF Champions League, where they reached the final. Lucas Ribeiro Costa, the dazzling forward for Mamelodi Sundowns, has made his eagerly awaited return to South Africa for pre-season preparations following his impressive stint at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. His journey to the forefront of international football reached its zenith when Costa showcased his skills on a global stage in the United States, where he received the 'Goal of the Tournament' award for his breathtaking solo effort against Borussia Dortmund. This prestigious accolade only adds to the expectations surrounding Ribeiro as he prepares to gear up for the upcoming Premiership season. Despite attracting interest from several clubs across Qatar, France, and Belgium, sources have confirmed that the offers received did not meet the valuation set by Sundowns for the player. Moreover, both Costa and his representatives have demonstrated a clear intent to remain focused on his development at Sundowns rather than exploring the other options. After a rejuvenating vacation back in Brazil, Costa has rejoined his teammates at the state-of-the-art Royal Marang Sports Campus for the final phase of pre-season. This venue, known for its top-tier facilities, has been a familiar haunt for the club, having spent time there before embarking on their previous European adventure. As Ribeiro dusts off his boots and trains with the squad, a report on X on Thursday said that the club is in advanced discussions with Egyptian giants Pyramids FC regarding a potential transfer for the dynamic winger. Ahmed Shobeir, a prominent media personality and former Egyptian national team goalkeeper, posted this development through a tweet, stating, "Pyramids is in advanced negotiations with South African club Mamelodi Sundowns to sign the Brazilian winger Lucas Ribeiro Costa." In addition to the transfer saga, Ribeiro's accolades continue to pile up. He has received nominations for two prestigious Premier Soccer League Awards this season: the PSL Footballer of the Season Award and the Betway Premiership Players' Player of the Season Award. His stellar performance last season also saw him crowned as the top scorer in the Premiership, netting an impressive 16 goals. As fans and pundits watch closely, the coming weeks could prove pivotal for Ribeiro. Will he remain a stalwart for Sundowns or embark on a new chapter with Pyramids FC? The answers remain on the horizon as the pre-season unfolds.

Orlando Pirates set to loan out two stars
Orlando Pirates have decided to send talented shot-stopper Sphamandla Gumede out on loan again, continuing their strategy of developing young talent through regular game time. The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who joined the Buccaneers from ABC Motsepe League side Dondol Stars two seasons ago, has yet to make his senior debut for the Soweto giants. A source close to the club confirmed the plans, stating. 'The team believes he won't break into the first team this season, and that's why they are looking at loaning him out again. They are grooming him for the future, and that's why they want him to keep playing while on loan.' Gumede isn't the only keeper expected to head out. Pirates are reportedly looking to streamline their goalkeeping options by loaning out at least two players. The club wants to settle on three senior goalkeepers, Siyabonga Dladla, Melusi Buthelezi, and Sipho Chaine, while promoting a DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) keeper to train with the first team. Sources suggest that alongside Gumede, Ethan Visagie could also make a temporary move away from the club this season. Gumede played the previous season on loan at Orbit College, where he gained valuable game time and continued to sharpen his skills between the posts. However, Pirates have yet to finalise his next move. Even as several clubs continue to monitor his situation closely in hopes of securing his services for the upcoming campaign. While Pirates' long-term vision for Gumede remains clear. Supporters will now watch closely to see where the young keeper will continue his growth during the 2025/2026 campaign. Hunt reveals why he picked Chiefs over Pirates in 2020
Durban City head coach Gavin Hunt has revealed he had the opportunity to coach Orlando Pirates but chose Kaizer Chiefs instead. After Bidvest Wits was sold in 2020, the 60-year-old coach found himself without a job, but didn't spend much time at home as Amakhosi called. Before the sale, Wits was one of the top teams in the league, having won the league two years prior. Top stars such as Vincent Pule, Thabang Monare, Deon Hotto, Ben Motswari and Thulani Hlatshwayo were sold to the Buccaneers. Hunt revealed that Orlando Pirates were interested in his services around 2020 but chose to join Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs instead. After just one season, the former SuperSport United coach was given the boot with just a few matches remaining. 'I would have stayed there longer [if he joined Pirates] because my guys were there and the way Pirates play suited me more, you know,' Hunt said in a podcast. 'Ja, it was going to happen. Maybe I should have gone there, what a bad mistake, you know.' Hunt stated that he did not join Orlando Pirates because he needed a fresh start and wanted to rebuild a team. 'It wasn't about money or anything. At that time, I felt at Chiefs there was in a better rebuilding phase there and we could build another team.' In 2020, Kaizer Chiefs were banned from signing players for two transfer windows following a Fifa punishment in December over the signing of Malagasy player Andriamirado Aro Hasina Andrianamimanana. Hunt joined the club during that time and was unable to bring in new players. 'I was told that the transfer band would be lifted, hey said 'don't worry, we're going to build a new team' and i went 'that's what i want'. I felt that sometimes when your players are going to Pirates, i thought maybe a clean break…let me go and rebuild another team. I always like building my own team because then I know I'll be successful,' he said. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
