
Loose Women star hit by health issue as she says 'I can't do it'
Dame Kelly Holmes has revealed how she was forced to slow down this year after feeling extreme burnout amid her busy schedule.
The Olympian, 55, who is known for her impressive career as a middle distance runner, admitted to Mirror that a busy year last year left her unable to carry on. "I was travelling all over the world, often doing five or six speaking engagements a week, I had my big 20-year medal celebrations and visiting Machu Picchu for charity. But burnout is a big issue for me, by January I could feel something wasn't right health wise," she explained.
Kelly, who is now a regular on the Loose Women panel, continued, "I took it as a sign that, while last year was amazing, I overdid it, and I couldn't do the same this year.
"I can't jump out of bed every day full of energy, and not every day is motivating. If I'm not feeling up to it, I don't need to run the half-marathon, for example, I'd rather be there in full spirit and energising everybody else."
Explaining that the time enjoying a slower pace of life has been one she's enjoyed, Kelly said: "I've been able to look at every part of how I deal with things now, and that's a real strength. Over the last four or five months, I think I've spent more timeat home than I have in years. I love being out in the garden – and with my alpacas!"
However, as Kelly says she still aims for 12,500 steps a day, often takes part in parkruns and keeps her nutrition in check, it's clear she's still more active than many.
She said: "I try to move every day, and that might be walking to a job rather than getting an Uber, because I'll get my steps in and I can people watch! I use it as a wellbeing tool to make me feel good about myself. On a weekend, we might go paddleboarding or on a dog walk or meet up with friends."
And adding another thing to her busy roster, Kelly is the official ambassador for vitamin brand Solgar's wellness partnership with The AJ Bell Great Run series this summer.
"I'm a huge fan of inspiring and motivating people to keep fit and moving in their lives – especially as we get older. Fitness has always been part of my life, but I'm at a point where I really understand the need for us to look at our overall wellbeing.
"So I've been going to the runs and it's just been the best. I've seen people of all ages getting their moment when they cross the finish line," she said of the partnership.
Kelly added: "Also, I've seen a huge amount of young women, in their mid-to-late twenties, taking part – more than I'd normally see. It was so positive to see that generation into their fitness and not being embarrassed or worried about the old vision of what women 'should' look like. It's changed, athletic, strong bodies are seen as beautiful now.

Woman with incurable cancer taking on Sir Chris Hoy cycling challenge
A Fife woman living with stage four incurable cancer is set to take on Sir Chris Hoy's cycling challenge in Glasgow. At the end of November 2023, Rae Hyndman started to notice that her stomach was swelling. After going to her GP with what she initially thought was IBS, the 60-year-old was admitted to hospital for investigation. Following blood tests, Rae was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer which had spread to her fallopian tubes, womb, liver, spleen, appendix, large and small bowel, diaphragm and her omentum, a fatty tissue which protects the abdominal organs. Doctors told the mum that she may have anywhere between three to six months to live. From January to June the following year, Rae went through six rounds of chemotherapy and a major operation. She had a number of organs, including her spleen and appendix, removed during the surgery, whilst cancerous tumours were cut from other affected areas. The treatment allowed Rae to attend her son's wedding and be there for the birth of her first grandchild Supplied Rae is determined to complete the Tour de 4 cycling challenge. Although the 60-year-old may never be cured from ovarian cancer, the markers in her blood have remained stable. She now takes daily cancer inhibitor medication and is monitored closely by NHS oncology and gynaecology teams. Rae says the ordeal has changed her perspective on what is important in life. She told STV News: 'It has been huge, not just for me but also for my family. 'It sounds like a cliché but every morning I wake up, I feel so happy. We could go away on bucket list holidays but after the diagnosis I didn't want to be away from my family. 'I'm more focussed on the simple things now. All the things people usually worry about, after this you realise none of that matters. 'It made me realise how important health is.' Rae is now determined to take on the Tour de 4, a charity cycle event set up by Sir Chris Hoy to raise money for cancer research. Rae, from Cupar, believes the Olympian's cancer journey reflects her own She explained: 'Chris Hoy's story is like mine. 'He went from being a healthy person to then having stage four cancer. I agreed with him that when I hear someone has stage four cancer I always thought that was it, you are unable to do anything. 'In some cases that is true, but I just feel that there is still hope. The news is still devastating but you may still have a good quality of life with your family. 'I feel as healthy as I did before the diagnosis. I think, like Chris Hoy, I want people to know you can live with stage four cancer.' The mum has signed up to cycle the Red Route, which is a 56-mile road cycle, with her daughter Emma, her friend and her cycling trainer Graham Barclay. Supplied Rae with her family on holiday. Rae is aiming to raise as much money as possible for Ovarian Cancer Action and to use her story to make more women aware of the disease. She said: 'Chris Hoy is campaigning for a screening methodology, I think we need the same for women to help diagnose ovarian cancer. 'There is a screening programme for cervical cancer and a vaccination which has pretty much eradicated it. The charity I am raising money for is looking into early detection and a vaccine for ovarian cancer. 'I thought if I had my breast, bowel and cervical screens I was pretty much covered. I was not aware of ovarian cancer. 'There is a misconception that a smear test can detect ovarian cancer but it doesn't. So I think people need to be more aware of ovarian cancer.' Baby's heartbreaking diagnosis after mother told she had 'new mum anxiety'
Doctors joked she had "happy baby syndrome" - but just weeks later the infant was diagnosed with a severe neurological disorder A heartbroken mum was told she had 'new mum anxiety ' only to discover weeks later that her baby had a rare and devastating brain disorder. Ezra Mattinson, now one, was initially dismissed by doctors, with them joking that he had "happy baby syndrome". However, an MRI scan later revealed the tot had Leigh syndrome, a terminal neurological condition that affects just one in 40,000 newborns, reports the Mirror. The illness causes the progressive loss of mental and movement abilities - and can become so severe the body may not have the strength to fight off a common cold. Mum Laura, 33, and dad Josh, 32, from Hull, knew something was wrong when Ezra suddenly began "unlearning" milestones at eight months – losing the ability to sit up, crawl and talk. He also never cried, something that alarmed them both. Laura, from Hull, says GPs initially just told her to "relax" and joked he was suffering from "chilled, happy baby syndrome". Ezra eventually got an MRI scan and medics in hospital recognised he had a neurometabolic disorder in June. Now mum-of-one Laura is focused on as making as many memories as possible with Ezra and is keen to take him to Disneyland before his third birthday. She said: "It's devastating because, if we hadn't been dismissed so early on, we could've known sooner. "Ezra started life hitting his milestones as normal - he could talk, sit up and was beginning to crawl. The first thing we noticed, even though he was never a big crier, was that he just stopped crying completely. "Doctors just told me I probably had new mum anxiety, and joked he had happy baby syndrome - one even asked why I was 'so bothered about him crying." Laura, who cares for Ezra full time, said he was progressing at a normal pace and even learned words including "dad", "hiya" and "bye" - by the time he was eight months. Ezra was unlearning all the things he already knew - like sitting up independently and speaking. At seven months, he started trying to crawl - but that stopped, too. We were so worried about him being in pain," Laura added. After being "repeatedly dismissed" by doctors, Ezra's inability to cry was spotted by a nurse administering his one-year vaccines. The nurse said it "wasn't normal" for babies not to cry after being injected and decided to refer him to Hull Royal Infirmary for further tests. An MRI scan at Hull Royal Infirmary on April 15 revealed abnormalities in Ezra's brain and days later doctors confirmed the devastating news that he had Leigh syndrome, a rare and life-shortening neurometabolic disorder. Laura said: "The paediatrician explained there were changes but wouldn't say what - I automatically thought the worst. Josh and I went in to see him and were told it could be mitochondrial disease. I didn't want to know too much." Genetic testing confirmed the diagnosis, and shockingly, Laura's 65-year-old mum was also diagnosed with adult onset Leigh syndrome, though she had shown no symptoms for most of her life. Adult-onset Leigh syndrome, which can affect anyone over the age of 18, is incredibly rare, with only a few cases diagnosed around the world, according to the National Library of Medicine. While Leigh syndrome is known to primarily affect newborns, adults may be affected, too. Laura continued: "Mum's been asymptomatic for a long time. She got a diagnosis at the age of 60 after developing a bit of weakness in her arms and legs - she's also partially-sighted and partially-deaf now. "After I told the doctors about mum, they said they didn't need to take the genetic testing any further. But, as we want more kids, I took a test on July 28 to see if I'm a carrier, or if I have it asymptomatically." Unlike her mum, Laura was told that Ezra would be unlikely to survive past the age of three - and even a common cold could mean moving to end-of-life care. The mum of one has set up a fundraiser to make as many memories with the tot as she can, including taking him to Disneyland for his second birthday in December. She said: "They say babies with Leigh syndrome don't tend to live past three. Josh and I have lost a lot of money coming out of work, and we want to give him the life we could've afforded had we not left."
