Australia star batter Beth Mooney has celebrated her milestone match in style by leading the side to a commanding eight-wicket triumph over the T20 world champions New Zealand at Eden Park on Friday.
The visitors were arguably below their best in the field as they gave up a strong start to allow New Zealand to edge towards a competitive total as Melie Kerr (51 not out) and Sophie Devine (39 no) guided the hosts to 137-2. But there was no denying Australia once openers Beth Mooney and Georgia Voll came to the crease.
The left-right combination blazed away for an unbroken 77 runs during the six overs of the powerplay and fired Australia to within 25 runs of their target by the halfway mark of the chase. Voll was dismissed soon after reaching her maiden T20 half-century with Australia only 15 runs short of their mark, but Mooney celebrated her 200th international by hitting the winning runs as she finished on 75 not out.
But Australia's win could have come at a huge cost with all-rounder Ash Gardner sent for scans on her right index finger after injuring it while attempting to catch a powerful Devine straight drive late in the White Ferns' innings.
New Zealand picked up a couple of late wickets when the win was already out of their reach but will have to significantly turn around their form and come with better bowling plans if they are to challenge Australia when the arch-rivals meet again on Sunday.

Australia pick an XI packed with all-round talent that comfortably bats as deep as Georgia Wareham at No 9, withy the leg-spinner preferred to Alana King in conditions expected to favour swing and seam. Young quick Darcie Brown will partner Megan Schutt with the new ball, while Beth Mooney will later open in her 200th international.

2.03am CET 02:03 Preamble
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the first women's T20I between New Zealand and Australia.
The White Ferns arrive at Eden Park as the T20 world champions after their stunning form reversal last year ended with a historic win over South Africa in the final. Australia had claimed the T20 World Cup at the three previous tournaments before their shock defeat to South Africa in the semi-finals, and have been on a tear since then with 12 victories from as many completed matches across all formats.
Both sides are close to full strength though Australia are most crucially without captain Alyssa Healy for this three-match series as the star keeper-batter rehabilitates a foot injury. New Zealand have recalled Sophie Devine, who has given up the T20 captaincy since lifting the trophy last year, while Melie Kerr also returns after sitting out the white-ball matches against Sri Lanka and impressing in the WPL.
The conditions in Auckland are looking promising for a full 40 overs, with a predicted high of 24C and little cloud around.
First ball will be at 2.45pm local time or 12.45pm AEDT. I'll be back shortly with the toss and team news, but in the meantime keep me company with your thoughts and predictions on email or @martinpegan on Bluesky or X. Let's get into it! Australian Women's Cricket Team 🏏 (@AusWomenCricket)
Finishing the season with a stint across the ditch! 🏏⁣ ⁣

Captain Monaghan 'emotional' over Ireland return

Rugby World Cup warm-up: Ireland v ScotlandVenue: Musgrave Park, Cork Date: Saturday, 2 August Kick-off: 14:00 BSTCoverage: Live on BBC iPlayer and website with live text commentary on the website and app Ireland skipper Sam Monaghan says she will "savour every moment" of her return from injury after 13 months on the sidelines. The lock injured her ACL representing her club Gloucester Hartpury in June 2024 before calf and hamstring injuries further delayed her return to action. Now able to see "light at the end of the tunnel", the 32-year-old has been named to start in the second row for Ireland's World Cup warm-up fixture against Scotland in Cork on Saturday. "It was really emotional seeing my name on the teamsheet again, not only for me but for my family, team-mates, everyone that's been on the journey with me, physios, S&Cs," said Monaghan."You build up a hunger. It's kind of like you've been starving for the last 13 months and you finally get your opportunity."I'm sure I'll really savour every moment and just want to do the best I can for the squad around me. They've really looked after me the last year so I'll be extremely excited to get back out on the pitch with them." Monaghan's second row partner on Saturday, Eimear Corri-Fallon, has also struggled with injuries over the past year."Me and Eimear have played together before in Dubai [at the WXV tournament in 2023] and Six Nations so we have that second row connection. "Unfortunately, both of us had a bit of a rough year so we're kind of on the same journey at the minute. It's nice to come back out on the pitch together."Monaghan and Corri-Fallon are not the only returning players to Ireland's panel for what is the first of two warm-up fixtures before the World Cup which begins in England later this Beibhinn Parsons, who broke her leg in December, will also start at Musgrave Park as Scott Bemand's side build towards the tournament where they will be in a pool alongside Japan, Spain and New Zealand. Ireland, however, have already been dealt a series of injury blows with key forwards Dorothy Wall and Erin King ruled out of the World Cup, while 2025 Six Nations Player of the Championship Aoife Wafer is a doubt. "Injuries are always so tough. We've such a strong connection as a group so when we lose someone we really feel it," Monaghan said."On and off the pitch they are such big characters, but they are both working extremely hard and I know how tough a journey it can be."That's high-level sport. It's given the opportunity for someone else to come in and we've had other girls come in and put their hand up and really perform."

MORTON won both of their Cappielow League Cup group matches by 3-0 last month and Dougie Imrie's side can make a winning start in the Championship at home to Dunfermline. Neil Lennon's visitors are slight favourites at 13/8 to bank an early 3 points on the road but the home side look big value at 9/5 and the 50/1 title outsiders can beat the 9/2 third favourites on day one. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Morton boss Dougie Imrie Credit: Kenny Ramsay 2 He'll take on Neil Lennon this weekend Credit: Kenny Ramsay The 'Ton's 3-0 wins came against League One and Two opposition but they've booked a home tie against Scottish Cup winners Aberdeen in 2 weeks time and Billy Davies has joined Imrie's backroom staff for the new campaign. The Pars host title favourites Ross County at East End Park later this month and only lost at Tynecastle after League Cup wins over Stirling, Hamilton and Dumbarton but Lennon's side may have to give best to a home side which finished 13 points above them last season. COVE won home and away in their League Cup group, as well as drawing at home to Falkirk and I'm backing Paul Hartley's players to make a winning League One start at home to Queen of the South. The home team are 6/5 to bank all 3 points at the Balmoral and they can beat a Queens side which will be glad to get back to Dumfries next Saturday after a tough League Cup group against Ross County and Partick. FALKIRK make a welcome return to the top division of Scottish football against Dundee United on Sunday and I'm backing the Bairns to make a winning start at a general 17/20, live on Sky Sports. John McGlynn has masterminded successive promotions with a side which has been partially rebuilt in the summer and the early indications in the League Cup point to continued success. Home form is going to be vital for Falkirk's Premiership survival and a successful League Cup group campaign can be the foundation for an early 3 points despite midweek European success on the road for United. The jury's out as to whether Kilmarnock have replaced the big players they lost along with Derek McInnes in the summer and I fancy newly promoted LIVINGSTON could be capable of a minor shock in the opening match of the Premiership season at Rugby Park. Killie look like going off Evens or better after drifting in the betting all week, but Davie Martindale's visitors are still available at a tempting 5/2 and better and the new look Lions have been warming up nicely in the League Cup after praise for their new MX Elite pitch. MK DONS have attracted plenty of support to win England's League Two this season and Paul Warne's charges can make a winning start to the campaign at home to Oldham at a general 7/10. Inside ex-Celtic and Scotland star's £3m property empire as free agent spends almost £1m on two properties in St Andrews The Dons have splashed their Kuwaiti cash to build a League One class side to win the division below and while the fireworks won't be expected until later in the season, Micky Mellon's National League play-off winners should be swatted aside. PLYMOUTH left the Championship with all guns blazing after taking the FA Cup scalp of Liverpool and the Pilgrims can get their League One campaign off to a winning start at home to Barnsley. Argyle are being rebuilt by Tom Cleverley and the former Watford boss can get off to a winning start at 5/4 against a Barnsley side probably bound for a mid-table finish. Newly promoted DONCASTER can get off to a flyer at 17/20 at home to Exeter and STOCKPORT can kick off an 11/2 Sunday treble with FALKIRK and HIBS by winning the 12 noon kick-off against Bolton at 19/20. Saturday SINGLE LIVINGSTON have signed well after negotiating the play-off final against Ross County and I fancy the visitors to make a winning start in Ayrshire at 5/2. Weekend ACCA Four homes and one away over the full 3 days of the football weekend with the acca paying out at 32/1. Morton 9/5 MK Dons 7/10 Hibernian 4/5 Falkirk 17/20 Hearts 11/10 CELTIC V ST MIRREN Sunday 4.30pm Sky Sports Celtic kick-off the new campaign with a repeat of last season's final fixture at home to St Mirren and the champions are a best-priced 2/5 with Bet 365 to retain their title. Saints crowned another top six finish with a 1-1 draw which looked like a win until James Forrest rescued Celtic but they're 13/2 to take a point and 14/1 to stun the flag day crowd by taking all 3 points. Stephen Robinson's side have had plenty of match practice in the League Cup but it's too early to bet against Celtic and the home side to win to NIL looks fair at EVENS with Hills. MOTHERWELL V RANGERS 5.30pm Sky Sports Rangers' midweek trip to Athens proved successful by guaranteeing Europa League Group stage football at the very least and the pressure should be off for tonight's trip to Fir Park. Jens Berthel Askou's home side are general 11/2 shots to take all 3 points with Betfred a standout 13/2 but visiting boss Russell Martin can utilise his attackers much more than he did in Greece and the general 2/5 for Gers looks about right. Euro hero Djeidi Gassama is 21/10 on the anytime scorer list and that looks a decent wager with Martin sure to give him more minutes ahead of Tuesday's latest qualifier against Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox. HEARTS V ABERDEEN Monday 8pm Sky Sports Hearts have made an impressive start to the season under Derek McInnes and I'm backing the goal-hungry Jambos to bank an early 3 points against the cup holders at Tynecastle. Despite being well-found in the early exchanges this week, Hearts can still be backed at 11/10 and that's top 5 material for me after a barrowload of goals in the League Cup. Aberdeen might need a game or two to settle down after their explosive start to last season's campaign but Jimmy Thelin's side could easily notch a goal and 7/10 BTTS looks a decent saver. DUNDEE V HIBERNIAN Sunday 3pm Hibs head for Dundee after Thursday night's Easter Road heartbreak against Midtjylland and I'm backing David Gray's players to bounce straight back with a win at 4/5. New Dens boss Steven Pressley has been making pessimistic noises after a couple of League Cup reverses but the home fans expectations remain high and the general 3/1 would have more takers if Simon Murray's fitness was guaranteed. Hibernian will take a big support north despite Thursday's last minute Euro exit and at this stage of the season. I'd be more than hopeful that Gray has the players to bounce back quickly. Australia 36-5 Wales: Visitors escape record loss with late call

Update: Date: 12:06 BST Title: Thank you and good afternoon! Content: FT: Australia 36-5 Wales Wales will fly home with plenty to think about following the two-Test tour of Australia which ended 1-1. You can read Ceri Coleman-Phillips' match report here for Wales' 36-5 defeat in Sydney. Wales face Scotland in the World Cup opener in Salford on 23 August before further group games against Canada (30 August) and Fiji (6 September). Thanks for joining us and see you later this month for full coverage of that World Cup across the BBC. Goodbye for now. Update: Date: 12:00 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Australia 36-5 Wales Caryl JamesFormer Wales wing on BBC Radio Wales Extra Looking ahead to the World Cup, I truly hope they win that first game against Scotland. That's the big one for Wales in the group stages. Update: Date: 11:58 BST Title: Australia's day Content: FT: Australia 36-5 Wales Caryl JamesFormer Wales wing on BBC Radio Wales Extra It was Australia's day today. Australia made no mistakes today and Wales' discipline was poor. It was the complete opposite from the game in Brisbane. Update: Date: 11:56 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Australia 36-5 Wales Caryl JamesFormer Wales wing on BBC Radio Wales Extra Wales need to keep working hard before the World Cup. They knew Australia were wounded and they'd come back with a better game plan, and they've certainly done that. Update: Date: 11:55 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Australia 36-5 Wales Sioned HarriesFormer Wales captain on BBC Cymru Fyw Australia have been clinical, in the way they control the game, in attack and defence. They were on the front foot from the opening whistle. Update: Date: 11:55 BST Title: Full-time: Australia 36-5 Wales Content: Wales have not suffered a record defeat against Australia but do have a reality check after the 21-12 win in Brisbane six days ago. Update: Date: 80 mins Title: Disallowed try Content: Australia 36-5 Wales Drama at the end as it appears there was a record defeat for Wales against Australia as the excellent Ashley Marsters powers over from the final maul of the game for her second try. But the score was ruled out and Wales slip to a 36-5 defeat instead. Update: Date: 78 mins Title: Post Content: Australia 36-5 Wales Caryl JamesFormer Wales wing on BBC Radio Wales Extra Such a well worked try from the Wallaroos. They're too dominant, too strong, the space opens up and it's easy to just roll over the try-line. Update: Date: 76 mins Title: Try Australia 36-5 Wales Content: Ashley Marsters Australia's replacement flanker Ashley Marsters powers over for another try but the conversion is missed by wing Desiree Miller which means it is not currently a record defeat. As it stands. Update: Date: 76 mins Title: Post Content: Australia 31-5 Wales Sioned HarriesFormer Wales captain on BBC Cymru Fyw Wales have conceded yet another penalty, discipline has really let them down today. Update: Date: 72 mins Title: Post Content: Australia 31-5 Wales Just got a bit scrappy in the past few minutes. Wales will hope in the final eight minutes to avoid a record defeat against Australia which was in September 2024 at WXV2 in Cape Town. Wales lost 37-5 on that occasion. Update: Date: 68 mins Title: Post Content: Australia 31-5 Wales Caryl JamesFormer Wales wing on BBC Radio Wales Extra Wales are not setting up properly, they're too flat receiving the ball. Simple things like that should be far better organised. Update: Date: 66 mins Title: Post Content: Australia 31-5 Wales Wales' first attack for a while as Carys Cox took the ball up the Australia 22 and Sean Lynn's side gain a penalty. Kayleigh Powell was instrumental in the build-up but the hosts respond with a brilliant 50-22 from Caitlyn Halse. Update: Date: 64 mins Title: Post Content: Australia 31-5 Wales Sioned HarriesFormer Wales captain on BBC Cymru Fyw That was a lively phase of play from both teams. Australia were looking to keep the ball alive with the offloads, that's so hard to defend because you don't know whether to make the tackle, or stay on your feet to stop the pass. Update: Date: 62 mins Title: More replacements Content: Australia 31-5 Wales Prop Sisilia Tuipulotu and scrum-half Keira Bevan leave the field with Jenni Scoble and Meg Davies coming on. Update: Date: 59 mins Title: Post Content: Australia 31-5 Wales It is all Australia in this second half. It is like attack against defence as Wales look to resist the green and gold onslaught. Update: Date: 55 mins Title: Replacement Content: Australia 31-5 Wales Just to mention that prop Maisie Davies had come on for Wales just before Australia's fifth try after Gwenllian Pyrs was sent to the sin-bin. Wing Jasmine Joyce-Butchers made way so Wales had a specialist scrummager and eight forwards. Update: Date: 53 mins Title: Post Content: Australia 31-5 Wales Alisha Joyce-ButchersWales flanker on BBC Sport Wales That was extremely hard to stop. You've got no chance when the number eight is running straight at the half-backs. Update: Date: 52 mins Title: Try - Australia 31-5 Wales Content: Tabua Tuinakauvadra It is a second try for the Wallaroos number eight who powers over from a scrum with Wales struggling with 14 players. Update: Date: 51 mins Title: Post Content: Australia 26-5 Wales Caryl JamesFormer Wales wing on BBC Radio Wales Extra I think Gwenllian Pyrs was going in for the tackle, that was unlucky.
