Texas A&M senior cornerback is looking healthy and back to form this preseason

USA Today14 hours ago
It can't be overemphasized how vital Texas A&M's cornerback rotation will be to the program's success during the 2025 season, headlined by he return of senior Will Lee III, and Georgia transfer Julian Humphrey, who is considered the fastest player on the roster. However, senior cornerback Tyreek Chappell could be the x-factor in the Aggies' improving substantially in the secondary.
While it wasn't all bad, the 2024 cornerback group was patched together in the offseason ahead of head coach Mike Elko's first season, which includes BJ Mayes, who became one of the more reliable corners late in the season, but has since moved on to the NFL after running out of eligibility. The underrated storyline was the early loss of Tyreek Chappell, which hurt the Aggies in the middle of the field at the nickel spot.
Early in the offseason, it was reported that Chappell was set to return for a final season. While he wasn't completely healed until the summer, the Philadelphia native looks like his old self during the first week/weekend of preseason practice, which was highlighted during a one-on-one matchup with Mississippi State transfer WR Mario Craver.
Craver is considered one of the fastest receivers on the roster, and while he did make the completion, Chappell went stride for stride with the transfer wideout, which is great to see with the 2025 season opener vs. UTSA just a mere 26 days away.
After recording three tackles before missing the rest of the 2024 campaign, Chappell has been one of Texas A&M's most reliable and versatile cornerbacks, netting 106 tackles, two interceptions, and 23 pass deflections during his first three seasons. Washington transfer CB Jordan Shaw has been battling with Chappell this preseason for the starting nickel spot, but it's been rumored that Chappell has taken the lead and is expected to win the job.
Either way, Texas A&M's cornerback depth is in much better shape compared to this time last season.

Latest 2026 bracketology projects UNC basketball to face familiar foe in NCAA Tournament

Preseason bracketology matchups rarely happen. The North Carolina Tar Heels' basketball program is looking to avoid what happened in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. After barely getting into the tournament, UNC beat San Diego State in the first four before falling to Ole Miss in the opening round. Season-long issues then resurfaced in the Tar Heels' loss to the Rebels and this past offseason saw an overhaul of the roster. In Joe Lunardi's latest round of 2026 bracketology, UNC earns a six seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. North Carolina is projected to a familiar opponent, 11-seed San Diego State, who advances via winning a First Four matchup. If this actual matchup takes place, Lunardi will cement himself as the top bracketologist in college basketball history (not that he already isn't). Lunardi might anger fans occasionally, but he's pretty accurate. Whereas the Tar Heels carried a guard-heavy roster last year, their upcoming roster will be post-heavy. UNC will carry 7-footers Henri Veesaar and Ivan Matlekovic at center, plus 6'11" Jarin Stevenson and 6'9" Caleb Wilson at power forward. Senior Seth Trimble and Colorado State transfer Kyan Evans will hold down the North Carolina backcourt, with freshman Derek Dixon and Virginia Tech transfer Jaydon Young behind them. If the Tar Heels make a deep run into the NCAA Tournament, Hubert Davis won't have to worry about his job security. UNC's roster is much deeper this coming season, despite plenty of new players, but that depth needs to be proven during non-conference gameplay. Pete Alonso ends Mets' 19-year drought in MLB All-Star Game

The post Pete Alonso ends Mets' 19-year drought in MLB All-Star Game appeared first on ClutchPoints. New York Mets star Pete Alonso has the power to blow open any game with one swing, and he did just that in the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday night in Atlanta. With the National League leading 2-0 in the sixth inning thanks to a two-run double from Ketel Marte all the way back in the opening frame, Alonso stepped up to the plate just after both Fernando Tatis Jr. and Brendan Donovan both reached base. Alonso didn't waste any time, taking a 1-0 fastball the other way out into right field and into the bleachers for a three-run home run. Alonso's home run gave the National League a 5-0 lead, which they have been clinging onto ever since. He is the first Mets player to hit a home run in the All-Star Game since legendary third baseman David Wright all the way back in 2006, according to Deesha Thosar of FOX Sports. That 19-year drought is somewhat surprising considering some of the great players that the Mets have had in the All-Star Game, but perhaps none of them can hit for power quite like Alonso can. On Tuesday night, he got a chance to show that off for the world to see and he did not miss the opportunity. After the big moment, Alonso joined Ken Rosenthal on the FOX broadcast and credited his teammates in front of him for setting him up to drive in three critical runs. 'That was great,' Alonso said. 'It's an unbelievable environment here. Great job from the guys in front of me, (Tatis) had an unbelievable AB, (Donovan) hustling out a single there. Unbelievable base running from those guys, they set up the whole situation.' The National League didn't just cruise to the finish after Alonso's home run, even after Arizona Diamondbacks standout Corbin Carroll followed that up with one of his own. The AL came back with a four-run seventh inning, in part thanks to a three-run homer by Athletics star Brent Rooker, so there's a chance that Alonso's big swing could end up being a decisive blow in the game. Former Notre Dame QB Steve Angeli praises Riley Leonard, discusses his clutch CFP play

Steve Angeli didn't receive a lot of playing time for Notre Dame last season because Riley Leonard was firmly entrenched as the starting quarterback. For the season, Angeli went 24-of-36 passing for 268 yards and three touchdowns against zero interceptions. But the now Syracuse Orange signal-caller did have an integral part in Notre Dame's run to the College Football Playoff national championship game. During the Orange Bowl CFP semifinal against Penn State, the now Indianapolis Colts rookie Leonard exited the game during the final drive of the second quarter with a possible head injury. Angeli came in to lead a 52-yard scoring drive that featured three third-down conversions and ended in a field goal that cut Notre Dame's deficit to 10-3 entering halftime of an eventual 27-24 Fighting Irish win. Angeli spoke to the local media at Syracuse on Monday about Leonard and that clutch FG drive. "That was the most fun I had playing football last year," Angeli told reporters … "Just having that opportunity was special." It's safe that say that while he didn't get to see the field often in South Bend, he loved his time there. Angeli, who completed 77 percent of his passes for 504 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception in 2023, has two years of eligibility remaining with the Orange.
