have deployed a team of senior officers, introduced a helpline and issued detailed guidelines following the Calcutta High Court's instructions on Friday.
The HC had directed the Kolkata Police to ensure that the processions should not cause any traffic congestions with Justice Tirthankar Ghosh restricting the movement of processions during office hours from 9 am to 11 am on Monday. "We have deployed senior officers. We have introduced a helpline. After 11 am, the rallies will be as usual. We will follow the instructions by the court," Commissioner of Kolkata Police- Manoj Verma said. Meanwhile, Banerjee reiterated on Sunday: "There is no reason why Bengali-speaking people should be put in jail. Why should they be tortured, harassed or arrested?" Banerjee, her cabinet members and Trinamool general secretary Abhishek Banerjee have overseen the preparations on Sunday ahead of the rally.

‘It's Loktantra, not Loktantar': BJP mocks spelling error in oppn banner; protest was over Bihar SIR
NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday mocked opposition for displaying a banner with incoorect spellings of 'Loktantra' (democracy) in Hindi during a protest inside the Parliament complex. In a social media post, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya highlighted the error, saying, 'It's Loktantra, not Loktantar.' "Can't blame Congress They can neither spell nor save Loktantra They believe in Parivar Tantra and Emergency! Surely they can spell and save that," BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said. The jibe came as opposition MPs, including Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, staged a demonstration at Parliament's Makar Dwar over the issue of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. During the protest, MPs raised slogans against the Election Commission 's exercise while holding a large banner that read: 'SIR: Loktantra par war' (Attack on democracy). The opposition has alleged that the voter roll revision is being misused to suppress votes and disenfranchise certain sections of the population. According to the Election Commission, 98.01% of voters in Bihar have been covered under the ongoing SIR as of July 23. Officials said the process has so far identified nearly 20 lakh deceased voters, 28 lakh individuals who have permanently migrated, 7 lakh voters enrolled in multiple locations, 1 lakh untraceable voters, and about 15 lakh unreturned voter forms. The EC also noted that 7.17 crore voter forms — approximately 90.89% of the total — have been received and digitised. This is the first such revision in Bihar in 22 years. The EC says the aim of the SIR is to clean up the electoral rolls by removing ineligible, duplicate, or non-existent entries, while ensuring all eligible citizens are included.

‘Real war': North Korea calls for preparedness for military action ‘anytime'; ramps up defence exercises
Kim Jong Un (PTI) North Korea's Kim Jong Un on Thursday urged his armed forces to remain combat ready. The Supreme Leader oversaw an artillery firing drill, according to Pyongyang's state media. His comments come amid North Korea's continued military support for Russia in its ongoing war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year. He called on his soldiers to be ready 'for real war' at 'anytime' and have the capacity to 'destroy the enemy in every battle,' reports the state media, reports AFP. Video footage broadcast by state media showed artillery unit soldiers firing shells into the sea. Kim was seen observing the drill through binoculars from an observation post, accompanied by two senior military officials. However, the exact location of Wednesday's exercise was not disclosed. Around 10,000 North Korean soldiers were deployed to Russia's Kursk region last year along with artillery, missiles and long-range rocket systems, as per South Korean and Western intelligence. At least 600 North Korean soldiers have been killed and thousands more wounded while fighting for Russia. 'Cleaned drains myself...': Smriti Irani says she did the ‘impossible' by defeating Rahul Gandhi in 2019 polls
Former Union minister Smriti Irani said she turned the "impossible into possible" when she defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. She also reflected upon the hard work she put in to achieve that feat. Smriti Iran told India Today in an exclusive interview that after losing the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, she spent the next five years working tirelessly on the ground. 'I cleaned drains myself, brought electricity to villages, built over a lakh homes, set up a medical college, a 200 bed hospital, a collector's office, a police line and even a fire station,' Irani was quoted as saying. Five years later, in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Smriti Irani ousted Rahul Gandhi to clinch his stronghold constituency, Amethi. However, in the 2024 general elections, she faced defeat at the hands of Congress leader Kishori Lal Sharma in a big upset for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). When asked whether Irani could have defeated Rahul Gandhi again if he had contested in 2024 from Amethi, Irani responded with a smile, 'Absolutely, that's why he didn't contest.' The former minister also clarified her less aggressive stance against Gandhi after the 2024 poll debacle. "Now, it's not my responsibility to be aggressive toward Rahul Gandhi. In 2024, the Gandhi family refused to face me. I can't chase after them," she said. During the interview, Smriti Irani said the Gandhi family moved to contest from Wayanad due to its favourable social demographics. 'No intelligent leader willingly chooses a seat where defeat is certain,' she said. 'If a seat like that is given, it's only out of duty to the party. But in 2019, I turned the impossible into possible," she added. Citing political history, Irani said losing from Amethi is not new for big leaders. "Sharad Yadav lost from Amethi, Menaka Gandhi lost. The Gandhi family only chose that seat due to favourable social equations," Irani said. She added that her defeat would have been more painful had she not worked extensively in Amethi between 2014 and 2019.
